While Scatch is free to use and free explanations are available at scratch.mit.edu, I have purchased three different books from this series and highly recommend them for a step-by-step guide for younger children. The books introduce new skills with each lesson. My granddaughters who are 6 and 7 were able to use them and were engrossed in the coding for longer periods of time with each use than I anticipated. The 6-year-old needed help with the reading

After doing the earlier coding work books from DK, my son wanted to do more projects like the very customized ones he was seeing on scratch.mit.edu. But I had no idea how to help him. The day these arrived, he started his most ambitious video game design yet and had all the tools he needed to make it work. This is a great intro to the world of coding!

I ordered this paperback Coding in Scratch workbook for my 11 year old grandson as a Christmas gift. He began reading through it the moment he unwrapped it and was very happy to receive it. I highly recommend it to others who are interested in Coding in Scratch.

Thought it had more information but I'm noticing this line of books are limited in the amount of info each book has.

My 11 year old already knows a little about coding but he really likes this program and workbook. My 8 year old will try it next :)

This is an excellent workbook to help you learn or teach Scratch. I used many this book fairly extensively in teaching my students Scratch and found it easy for me to use and for them to understand. I taught this with grades 4 - 6.

My girls love SCRATCH and this was perfect for my youngest daughter!

The author, Barbara Lewis, is a former classroom teacher who has written several other winning books for young people concerned with social issues and self development.This guide is easy to use and organized in a very accessible manner. Lewis defines seven key issues for today's teens to address. These are fairly broad in scope. This book illustrates why, if at all possible, you should first check out plant books you are considering buying at the local library. Although attractively laid out and with good photos, only a small number of cactus species are mentioned and important information is missing. For example, the author remarks that Mammillaria plumosa is difficult to grow but neglects to say why so I still don't know enough to make an informed decision on whether or not to purchase one (I've been thinking about it).On the good side, the photos are excellent and he does talk about basic cactus care including tolerable temperature ranges for each species he discusses. He also discusses planting a cactus bowl with good pictures and tips. It's probably a good book for a beginner but doesn't contain nearly enough information for what I want.

I was left a large cacti collection when my grandfather passed away. This book covers everything I needed to know! So far I have been able to keep them alive. It has also been referenced by several friends who found it useful to troubleshoot their cactus problems. Thanks Cacti book!

I'm not finished but I wanted to chime in right away. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor, part-time teacher at Colorado Christian University, and published author. I live in the Columbine neighborhood and worked with police and firefighters at Ground Zero so healing from trauma is of huge interest to me.I've spent the last four years researching and writing about the powerful topic of Posttraumatic Growth. (I wish I could tell you the title of my book but it remains in the hands of agents and publishers. I hope it gets to be born someday.)In the meantime I want to shout hurray and yeehaw on almost every single page of this book.The smashing point of this book: All people can heal, and some people are even launched to a more meaningful place after experiencing trauma; clinical research shows how.Growth is actually more common than the much better known and far better studied posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The challenge is to see the opportunity presented by seismic events. After trauma, people need hope. In the aftermath of the tragedy, people need to know there is something better.Following a traumatic experience, most people experience a range of problems: Trouble sleeping, nightmares, agitation, flashbacks, emotional numbness, avoiding reminders of the traumatic event, anxiety, anger, guilt, hyper-vigilance, depression, isolation, suicidal tendencies, etc. Until recently the entire discussion of the human response to trauma ended with a summation of the hardships incurred by trauma. But as it turns out, a traumatic event is not simply a hardship to be overcome.Instead, it is transformative.Trauma survivors and their family and friends need to know there is another side to trauma. Strange as it may sound, half of all sufferers emerge from the trauma stronger, more focused, and with a new perspective on their future. In numerous studies, about half of all trauma survivors report positive changes as a result of their experience. Sometimes the changes are small (life has more meaning, or the survivor feels closer to loved ones) and other times they are massive, sending people on new career paths. The worst things that happen to us might put us on a path to the best things that will ever happen to us. A brush with trauma often pushes trauma survivors to face their own mortality and to find a more meaningful and fulfilling understanding of who they are and how they want to live.To be clear, growth does not undo loss, and it does not eliminate adversity. Posttraumatic growth is not the same as an increase in well-being or a decrease in distress. And even for those who do experience growth, suffering is not mitigated in the aftermath of tragedy. Growth may make the pain meaningful and bearable, but it does not deny the hurt.For decades, nearly all the psychological research into trauma and recovery has focused on the debilitating problems that people face, but Option B speaks of the paths people can take to heal from their experiences and discover new meaning in their lives.Just this morning a blog reader wrote to me and said she feels stuck because of her father's suicide many years ago. The first thing I did was tell her about your book.I have been, and will be, recommending this book to friends and clients.Thank you Sheryl and Adam.

At the beginning of this book, I felt grateful to Sandberg and Grant for their clear articulation of how we as a culture fail those who are suffering by not talking to them about their adversity. Early chapters provide some ideas about how to bring up difficult situations and how to offer concrete, realistic help instead of fuzzy, generalized help. Later chapters on raising resilient kids and failing at work provide some good recommendations for building resilience, but it’s unclear to me what that kind of resilience has to do with helping people bear the intense emotions of grief and trauma.The rest of the book was shockingly awful. Sandberg and Grant pushed way beyond basic recommendations for supporting grieving people into promoting their strategies for “overcoming” adversity as universally helpful. Their resilience strategies are so ill-advised for normal grieving and traumatized people that I can not only not recommend this book, I also need to strongly speak out against it.As a person who was suddenly widowed 25 years ago, when my son was an infant; and as a psychotherapist who has helped people with grief and trauma for over 20 years, I’m horrified and insulted by the way Grant misapplies to grief and trauma his business-based positive-psychology strategies—strategies that are intended to help people with performance anxiety, not mortal suffering.I know from experience that untimely loss is brutal, and I don’t fault Sandberg for submitting to Grant’s insistence that she follow his prescriptive exercises, especially because he frightens her by telling her that if she continues to feel her painful feelings, she’ll be “trapped” in negative emotion and her children “won’t recover.” Of course she wants her kids to be okay. So she uses his change-your-thinking exercises to momentarily stanch her wrenching pain. But in the long run, these strategies don’t get rid of grief’s intense feelings. Instead, Grant’s strategies sidestep anguishing emotions and push them underground where they fester and cause problems—years later and in future generations.I think it was irresponsible of the publisher to allow two unqualified people to make these damaging universal suggestions to grieving and traumatized people. Sandberg is a brand-new widow. (Whether she and the general public want to believe it or not, two years into widowhood is very early.) Though I would have supported her writing a memoir of her early widowhood; I think it’s naïve for her to advise anyone on how to deal with grief and trauma for the long haul.And Grant is a BUSINESS professor. He has zero training for working with people who are going through intensely emotional experiences, and no knowledge of up-to-date emotion science. The strategies he foists onto Sandberg emerged from research on learning and performance, not on dealing with overwhelming emotion. His cognitive-behavioral tools coerce Sandberg out of her pain and force her to prematurely and frantically chase after joy, gratitude, and meaning. These healing emotions don’t need to be hastily imposed onto people. Joy, gratitude, and meaning naturally arise when grieving people are given time and help to bear their intense emotions.Though Sandberg was able to harness her strong achievement-drive to employ Grant’s tools for dominating her grief and leaping toward joy, all of the tools spring from a hijacking of a narrow theory about the single personality trait of resilience for willfully overpowering anguish. Throughout the book, Sandberg and Grant use terms like overcome adversity, triumph over sadness, and regain control. These warlike terms reveal that they view grief as a monster that we should fear and flee from, or battle and fight against, and to ultimately prevail over. Though ultimately fear-based, this ego-driven, conflict-filled story preserves the beloved American illusion that even in the face of horrific tragedy, we can acquire weapons of resilience in order to dominate the grief monster and bounce back to normal in just over a year.When distressing grief reactions occur in a society like ours that denigrates long-lasting and intense grief responses, grievers can end up isolated, ashamed, and ill. They believe, “Something’s wrong with me. I need to make this stop.” “If I were resilient, I wouldn’t be so overwhelmed.” These beliefs are invalidating and they perpetuate a harmful fear of grief, and Option B throws gasoline on the flames of these beliefs.Emotion science clearly shows that when we are plunged into intense emotional states such as grief, we need to feel understood and we need to be helped to express our emotions in a way that doesn’t overwhelm us. Grant never soothes Sandberg, never offers her kindness to help her bear and express her grief. If the Victorian headdress and great smile don’t get you, the subtitle The autobiography of a fictional Victorian know-it-all might be enough to clinch the sale.There is a lot of humor in this novel. Cuevas, acting as both Actual Rebecca and “I” is the narrator who occasionally makes direct humorous asides to the reader. As for the humor; it is good, understated, and threatens to conceal the fact that there are very good, solid, philosophical points made. Many would argue that the world would be a better place if these faith-based humanitarian ideals were more operational.Mother Rebecca is wise and knows many things, perhaps everything. It is logical that she would know everything. As was stated many times, Mother Rebecca is older than dirt. Age and wisdom correlate directly, right? From various sections of the novel, we know that Actual Rebecca, “I,” the author, created Mother from a variety of sources during her “actual” growing up. She could not channel Mother Rebecca, a wise woman offering advice on things such as marriage until she had more of an understanding of marriage. By the time Actual Rebecca was fifty plus years old, she was able to give such advice plus tech support. Taking lessons provided by Aunt Sophronia and a nanny, Mrs. Happy, Actual Rebecca was able to merge wisdom, assembly instructions, and computer user instructions.In order to be an expert in all things, Mother Rebecca needed life experiences. Terrible at math, she was not sure how many husbands she had throughout her life, but she could remember the notable ones. She had a son, later known as Mr. Knit-It-All, with her first husband, Mr. Fix-It-All-Up. She had one philosophy of marriage: “The secret to a happy marriage is separate houses.” (p.35). Her husband had a complementary but differently phrased philosophy: “The reason to get married is to have a witness to your life.” (p.35). Mother Rebecca’s third, forty-seventh, or fifty-second husband (she really hates math) was Head Honcho.Mother Rebecca loved greenhouses. Inside these normally physically visible constructions, Mother Rebecca planted seeds of abstract feelings and experiences, such as the seed of loss. She collected these seeds from the experiences of Actual Rebecca (AR) as AR went on her life’s journey up to the age of fifty when AR decided to make life changes. Up to that time AR had experienced almost nothing but loss. She had lost her mother, two children during childbirth, and a husband who she was still friends with. Her son, Youthful One, had left home and moved to the Big City. AR decided to go on adventures. At that point, AR and Mother Rebecca (MR) became one. It was AR as Mother Rebecca who married Head Honcho. Whichever husband he was, there was to be a divorce. Rebecca had married into a tribe that would not accept her and the pair reluctantly agreed to a divorce so Head Honcho could fulfill his predestined tribal duties. And this is where the novel takes a new direction. From how Mother Rebecca came into being we enter the world of “What can Mother Rebecca do for you today?”The answer is that she can give advice on surviving life. As Cuevas tells us, Rebecca’s life is all about helping others. “If Mother Rebecca were working full time at a job, or raising more children, or tending to grandchildren, she would not have time to write blogs and ebooks and lesson plans for you. She would not have a way to listen to you and hear your issues and concerns. Her heart would be full of others, and the details of everyday life.” (p. 74).At this point, the novel has some similarities to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The novel has 111 pages total and the entertaining build up to what I consider the philosophical point has taken seventy-four pages. It can be inspiring. Mother Rebecca will even solve the mystery of the two-sided triangle. (p. 78).This novel is available on Amazon for USD 0.99. I gave it five stars for its unique writing style and understated, subtle humor.

Most disappointed. The author spends too much time trying to be precious and not enough time producing significant content. Do not waste your time.

This book starts out seeming to promise a reworking of a Victorian Age book on how to keep a home and navigate marriage, but it frustratingly never seems to get to any nitty-gritty, practical advice. Instead it takes us on a journey of the author's life explained through metaphor and fairy tale. A few times I was ready to give up reading it, but something about the ripe and generous character of Actual Rebecca, (the author herself), kept me turning the virtual pages.While some of the metaphors made me want to scream, especially the part about her marriage to the Head Honcho and the lost island of Nirvania. I kept trying to figure out what real situation in her life this referred to. I longed for her to give us a solid idea to decipher this puzzle. After much thought, I came to the conclusion that perhaps she married a Palestinian, assuming she is Jewish. That would fit some of the hints she drops. Ultimately, though, it hardly matters because after this episode, the book turns into a very different beast.Ultimately it is a book about the oneness of us all, the universality of all religions and philosophies, especially the fact that they all lead us to the same place - the Golden Rule. Although this was not at all what I had expected the book to be about, I found that I not only agreed with what she was saying about life, love and our purpose on earth but also that I felt that she was speaking my own words. This seemingly fanciful book packs a lot of hard-earned wisdom and the author does indeed make suggestions on how to fix things such as being stuck in a rut, pain from loss and how to use it as a springboard toward growth and service to others.She actually made me cry when she spoke about how she still felt the love of her mother who died when she was just seven years old. Anyone who has lost someone close will feel the same. If you are ready to take a ride through a very intelligent and deep-thinking woman's mind, and be challenged to confront your own self, this is a short, powerful book you should read.

The book was fun, quirky, and a quick read during holiday travel.Note: I also had a pre-publication copy but enjoyed the book and purchased a copy for myself.Mother Rebecca provides an unusual twist to modern life infusing wisdom from two different time periods. The wordplay is engaging and the topics apply to most anyone attempting to balance the challenges of 21st century living.

I was instantly attracted to the inventiveness of the title and cover of this book. It's the sort of book you can have on hand and pull out little snippets from time to time to jolly things up at parties. I loved the eccentricity of this book. Though I got distracted by its meanderings in places, it was probably intended by the author. Witty and entertaining.

I use a lot of these self-help books with adolescents in the school setting. This one has solid information that helps them understand more about anxiety and what they can do about it. Several students ask to take this home and work on it because they just want to know more about whats "wrong with them" and what they can do about it.

Our small group worked through this book together, meeting weekly at some fun restaurant to discuss the book. The book provided a language to think about and discuss our destructive mental processes. It was helpful for all of us, most especially for my teenage daughter struggling with anxiety.

This helped my 14y.o. son understand that this is normal. It helped us as a family talk about how we all deal with stress and anxiety. My son uses it often to reference back on how to deal with different situations he faces with school, church, family, friends.

Lots of meditation! I was expecting more coping skills other than meditation. A lot of teens don't have the time or patience for meditation and it's hard to get them to comply. If a teen does comply I could see it being beneficial.

This book would be great, if only my teenager would actually practice what the book tells you to practice. If a teenager takes it to heart, and really tries to do the exercises, and incorporate mindfulness into their lives, this book would be very helpful.

I love this workbook. I used it with a teenage boy with anxiety and he seemed to really enjoy the exercises and benefited from being taught the strategies inside for recognizing feelings of anxiety and depression as well as recognizing black and white thinking. His favorite was the "Worrying on Purpose" activity. I found that by going through it with him, I benefited as well. I will continue to use this in my daily practice! Amazing, lovingly written book that completely captures the essence of healing. It is written full of hope and optimism, and is written with a complete focus on helping others - especially those in vulnerable and painful situations - feel better. It is extensively and methodically researched and has an impressive evidence base - which, as a physician, I am drawn to (many people writing about healing are too quick to exploit the vulnerability that comes with pain and sickness to promise the moon, using unfounded and dubiously copyrighted techniques, for excessive sums of money and little proof of objective results). That being said -- not everything in this modality of healing can be proven with a randomized, double-blind controlled trial - and shouldn't be. The power and inspiration of subjective experience and the unexplainable must be respected by mainstream medicine, which certainly does not have all the answers to a sizeable swath of the population's ills (especially pain, chronic disease, and disability). To this end, the author's work is an invaluable and profound addition to my medical library. I applaud the author for the compassion, intelligence and sincerity he demonstrates throughout the work. I'm the type of person who has a need to know how and why things work, not just "do this" and "this" will happen. This book has it all! David explains how and why our thinking and visualizations have a positive or negative effect on our bodies. He then goes on to explain "how to" and includes many,many visualizations for a great deal of illnesses. I've always felt that visualization was so difficult but after reading this I no longer feel this way. If I can do it anyone can.And through it all I had the feeling that David is genuinely wanting to help people. His love and caring shines through the entire book. I have read many books on this subject over the years beginning with the "Seth" books by Jane Roberts. David R.Hamilton's "How Your Mind Can Heal Your Body" is the best I have ever read.I have been searching for a book such as this for years and have always been a bit disappointed after having read many of them. I read and reread this book all the time because I learn something new everytime I read it. I do believe the mind is very powerful and can heal your body. I've known about visualization, but I had never heard it explained quite like Dr. Hamilton explains in his book.I actually visualized a "mini-me" going inside my body and healing my back. I do this exercise at night when I'm already in bed. I also visualize a "mini-me" working on my blood pressure. I liken my blood pressure to a balloon with lots of air. In my visualization, there is a meter with a reading of my BP. Then I start to release some air, and I watch the meter go down to a normal reading. I try to visualize as often as I can.Let me tell you, I don't have the back pain anymore. I haven't tested my BP, but I visualize that it's normal. I will continue doing these exercises. Maybe I'll start to visualize LOVE. I visualized my promotion and got it.I think you will enjoy the book.
