Per Michael's writing, he pulls from the real world. Be it his descriptions of military equipment or its use, survival skills, geography or even sailing, his research into these topics show in his writing, and make things more believable and real.Ice Fall continues in the genre of post-apocalyptic life, of which Michael has written about before in Seed.This time he uses some of the growing events in science to bring about catastrophic events that change the face of the earth.And in the middle of it is a rather ordinary guy, who has had some life experiences to help him do a little better than others. While not a man with a huge flaw, it is a flaw that we come to discover over time, and one that is repaired by those around him as he pushes his own limits and boundaries.Michael has done some research into the science used in Ice Fall, and it does make the novel a little more realistic, without getting too deep into the science behind the catastrophe. And it works for the most part (being a engineering physicist does make science a bit more accessible to me at time, and I can "neck-beard" at times), and leaves you wondering if we, as humans, are doing the right thing pushing the boundaries of the sciences we know.All in all, Ice Fall is a great read that I was able to finish in one sitting. I can easily see there being a sequel to this novel as the story line is left wide open, but not with some horrible cliff-hanger that makes you hate for the wait.Give it a read.
Michael Edelson has put together a well-crafted post-apocalyptic novel. It shows a believable “end of the world as we know it†scenario, and focuses on a small cast of believable characters. The main player is Peter Anderson, a loner who is suffering the aftereffects of personal failure. He almost made it into the navy Seals—but didn’t. He is licking his wounds from a divorce. He is in seclusion in a cabin in the Catskill Mountains, when an earthquake (and a tidal wave, though he does not learn about that for some time) signals the end of civilization.To be honest, I was not expecting much from the book. I am interested in post-apocalyptic novels, and this one was on sale. The cover did not particularly impress me and I was prepared for a less-than-stellar read. Boy, was I wrong.This novel is really quite good. The author obviously knows something about guns, military tactics and ship-handling. I am retired Army myself, and usually can find something to nit-pick in novels of this type. I could not find anything to quibble with here.The means by which the world ended was also clever. I don’t know much about modern physics, but his writing was clever enough to sell me. It sounded scary and all-to-believable. But I don’t want to be more specific and spoil it for anyone.There were a few weaknesses. Some of the minor characters could have been better crafted, and I am not so sure that cannibalism would be all that likely. Peter seemed a bit inconsistent, in that he was super competent at times and a total klutz in some other situations. But he does come across as a real human being. My only other complaint is that the book was too short. There was a lot of good material and the author could have done more with it. But perhaps a sequel is in the works.Overall, I liked the book and am sure that readers of the adventure genre will find it enjoyable.
Finally got around to writing a review. Here's yet another Edelson book that i loved, a good post-apocalyptic story with all the usual traits of his books. A nice mix of action, romance, mystery, science, and of course he has boats in all of his books, though in this one it was especially necessary given the waterworld that the characters are left with...I won't really get into the story as it's not completely fresh in my mind now, but will just say that i really enjoyed it and recommend to anyone who needs a good adventure to escape to for a while.

He knows something is wrong because all communication has stopped. Living in isolation, he isn't sure how much longer he can survive without human interaction.Much to his surprise he rescues a young woman, Penny, who is being chased by appointed lawmen from a nearby village. Penny and Peter decide to pack up and get away from the village and find another place to live. On their journey they discover nearly everything has drowned by enormous floods, interact with a combined military group, and come across a group of scientists on a yacht hung up on an underwater house roof. The head scientist thinks he knows what happened to cause the huge tsunamis that flooded the world and needs to get to a specific observatory to find out for sure.Peter constantly refers to himself as a failed SEAL, invalided out just two weeks short of graduation. However, despite his training, he is not particularly competent and has poor self-esteem. He blames every error he commits on those missing last two weeks of training. Unable to tolerate a desk job, he leaves the Navy and becomes an English and poetry teacher at a college.Penny is a student from MIT with a doctorate in physics and a surprising amount of knowledge about climate. She provides angst for Peter, who wrings his hands over how much smarter, prettier and younger she is in comparison to himself. She quickly learns to shoot a variety of guns Peter has accumulated over the years, and considers herself Peter's backup. This adds more angst for Peter, who keeps trying to keep her out of danger.Except for the military, all the characters are stereotypes, which makes it hard to empathize with them. Peter's character, in particular, becomes grating after a while, as he appears to forget all his naval training and wander into a soap opera. Every mistake he makes is followed by self-castigation and comments as to how he should have remembered what he should have done. For a man who was in the Navy and almost completed SEAL training, other than a few specific tasks he is generally portrayed as a man who was never in specialized training.The three stars given this book are for the story idea. Apocalypse by massive flooding is different, and the author does not fall back on zombies as a plot device. That said, the book is badly in need of editing. The author is either familiar with large boats or has done research, and research has definitely been done on climate change and physics-related topics, but the discussions of these plot points is excessive. Penny discussing climate change with Peter could easily have been covered with a few sentences of common word explanation followed by a general "and we talked more about it at dinner." Naming parts of the craft in a litany of this then this then this might be of interest to people who sail, but this reader couldn't follow what was being done and would have preferred a shorter discussion of such information.The ongoing discussion of the possible physics reasons for the flooding is tedious and dense. Again, while no doubt interesting to like-minded individuals, there should be a way of conveying the information without such technical explanation.The reason for the flooding seems like a stretch to use a Really Cool method backed up with science. Unfortunately, this seems contrived, and the characters move through the story by coincidence. Peter rescues Penny, who becomes his fire support with seemingly little training. Just when they're in a "we're gonna die" situation, help arrives. The boat he helps refloat has exactly what they need.Some of the best description comes from observation of drowned cities they pass. New York is well described, although the addition of a couple of more easy recognized landmarks would provide a clearer pictures. The same holds for other major cities they see.The author has come up with a little used method of apocalypse which has the potential to be more suspenseful with editing. The science included as the reason for the tsunamis is dense, and this reader still doesn't understand what caused all the flooding.
