The Voices Within: The History and Science of How We Talk to Ourselves, by Charles Fernyhough

Review

"Talk to yourself? We all do, all the time, and the voices persist even when you'd rather they shush. The 'inner voice' is becoming a prime-time topic in brain studies, and Fernyhough's book is a solid entry in the discussion. It provides enough science to ground the argument, but the real achievement here is the writing. The author is a psychologist and a novelist, and his prose has a narrative feel that separates it from most books on the psych shelf."―David DiSalvo, Forbes.com, Best Brain Books of 2016"Fernyhough has built up an interesting picture of inner speech and its functions." ―Jerome Groopman, New Yorker"In The Voices Within, [Fernyhough] has rendered complicated mental experience without losing its human texture, as so often happens when psychological questions are addressed in the lab.... [It's] an intriguing and deeply humane book.""A must-read for those seeking to understand the voices in their heads."―Discover"The author's investigations, at once scientific and humane, represent the discipline of psychology at its rare best.... After reading The Voices Within, you may never again be quite as thoughtless about the fact that you think."―Raymond Tallis, Wall Street Journal"The Voices Within...intriguingly challenges conventional assumptions about the self as unified and coherent, while also posing the question: how might that which we deem pathological be shaped by the mores of our times?"―Christine Gross-Loh, Guardian, Best Books for Summer 2016"[Fernyhough's] account is fascinating, not only for the ideas he raises but also for his vignettes of historical thought and research."―Lancet"This sophisticated and appealing work scrutinizes a tangled topic with aplomb and will leave readers permanently observing their own thought processes differently. Perfect for readers of Oliver Sacks and Malcolm Gladwell." ―Booklist, starred review"Fernyhough's book is a valuable addition to the literature surrounding the unending human quest to understand the location--and the creation--of the self." ―Publishers Weekly

Mr. Fernyhough presents an insightful contribution to the literature on what is variously called self-talk, covert verbalizations, self-verbalizations, inner voices, or inner speech, and distinguished by the author from the phenomena of “hearing voices.” The work is written from the perspective of a clinical psychologist and researcher possessed of an articulate, lucid, and prosaic writing style. Fernyhough - how I enjoy repeating this interesting name in my mind’s own self-talk – contributes a broad range of anecdotes from troubled patients, creative fiction writers (including himself), observations of his toddler daughter’s behavior and inferred thought processes, historical autobiographical works, the author’s own experiences, and other clinical research studies and experiments. He also cites theory and evidence associating variations of inner voice phenomena and anomalies with specific cognitive processes and particular anatomical features of the human brain. The author underscores the nascence of research into details, mechanisms, and processes of human cognition that attempt to explain the varied types of inner voices. We gain an appreciation of how many in society stigmatize inner voice hearing, and tendencies to pathologize those who express what most of us consider anomalous experiences. Inner voices may be debilitating for some, merely annoying or neutral/benign for others, or even facilitating as for stimulating the imagination of creative writers. The growing “Hearing Voices Movement” is described as a support initiative and venue for therapeutic sharing. It is stipulated that hearing voices is a normal behavior process, arguably with adaptive value. The book is a valuable read, although it does not address my particular area of interest which is the role of self-verbalizations or inner speech in the conduct of typical activities of daily living, problem-solving, reflection, analysis, and specifically, its role in the collective conscience manifesting human social institutions such as systems of law. Curious are lack of references to the work of Albert Ellis and his Rational Emotive Theory/Therapy, the ideas of Noam Chomsky relating to “surface” and “deep” layers of cognitive processing, and to the so-called Sapir/Whorf hypothesis. Perhaps the reader would also benefit from further explanation of the tantalizing concepts “theory of mind abilities” (p. 220), “social agent tracking,” “social cognition,” and the “dialogic framework” (p. 236) presented by the author. A final lament, perhaps peculiar to my tastes, is the lack of bottom-of-the-page references – they are all pooled at the end of the book. Those of us who find great value in reading footnotes pay the cost of endless flipping from citation to reference. I highly recommend this laudable work for those interested in this under-studied area of cognitive science and for researchers endeavoring to make further contributions to the literature on inner voices and both the constructive and apparently potentially destructive, or pathological, effects, associated with their occurrence. I wish I had this book in the early 1980s when writing a graduate thesis (unpublished) pertaining to the effect of self-verbalizations on motor behavior and task performance.

I finished reading this reasonably priced book which was delivered speedily to my door(sorry I can't resist that one) and I have taken time to think about what I have read and now I am going to give a review based on my reading of the entire book. Imagine that. I highly recommend this book because it sheds light on a subject that doesn't get much light. The main reason for why it doesn't is because talking to oneself is something that everyone does but never admits. In a sense it is like other functions of the body which are not done in public and are considered not done at all in a way. You can think of a few examples of what I am talking about for sure. Talking to oneself is not a sign of mental illness if others hear you doing it anymore than some other private actions would be if done in public. It is not socially acceptable but we all do it alone because our brains work this way. This book does a very good job of blending scientific analysis with insightful real life examples and narratives while exploring various levels of the internal talking. This book has a wide perspective on the topic and discusses self talking from medieval religious mystics to the voices people hear. There are a lot of descriptions of differing explanations for how and why the brain produces internal talking and in a good scientific manner it reveals how many ideas have yet to be totally proven. The author advances his own construct for how the brain does internal speech and brings that construct through controversial aspects in order to see how it holds up. Thus this book is good open minded science in the best sense. If you ever wondered about that talking you do with yourself all the time, then this is the book for you.

I was super excited to read this as I do public speaking about this very subject. There are some good nuggets, but the book is too, well, bookish for me. It was hard to relate to and therefore I found it painful to keep reading. It is very scholarly so if you are looking for the reasons we have a constant narrative running, you may enjoy it.

Interesting book and generally easy to read. I did feel at times that the author was speculative and made conclusions that may not have been fully supported by research.

Very good book! Helped me understand myself.

This book combines modesty with wide-ranging erudition. In an area where most "experts" barge in making claims based on little but the authority of their own minds, Fernyhough strives to embrace evidence however contrary, and collaborates broadly in search of more. He makes it obvious that having one of the most basic facts of human psychology --- the prevalence among many (but not all) of us of "inner speech" -- largely unexamined cannot be excused by claims of intractability, as it has so largely been.

Fantastic and beautifully written. Charles goes into just enough detail about the respective neuroscience without being overwhelming. I was elated to see the references to Julian Jaynes's work and the modern scientific understanding of inner monologue. Tons of data from surveys, in which Charles respectfully considers in his ideas. One of the favorites I've read in the past year.

Dry writing style, but detailed and thorough. If this is a topic that interests you, then this is a worthy book.

The Prince (A Penguin Classics Hardcover), by Niccolo Machiavelli

Review

“[Machiavelli] can still engage our attention with remarkable immediacy, and this cannot be explained solely by the appeal of his ironic observations on human behaviour. Perhaps the most important thing is the way he can compel us to reflect on our own priorities and the reasoning behind them; it is this intrusion into our own defenses that makes reading him an intriguing experience. As a scientific exponent of the political art Machiavelli may have had few followers; it is as a provocative rhetorician that he has had his real impact on history.” –from the Introduction by Dominic Baker-Smith

32,634 words, 26 chapters, additional materialW. K. Marriot translationWhy was this written? If I wanted to conquer a country and become its prince, the first thing I’d need to know is how to get my own personal military. I didn’t find that information in this book. It seems to have been written for men who already have their own personal militaries. Yet most of the advice is about conquest. If they have their own personal militaries, why wouldn’t they already be experts in conquest?Someone who is already a prince would need to know about what to do after the conquest. He needs to know how to deal with his subjects and how to deal with other rulers without going to war. There should have been an entire chapter on diplomacy and international trade. The alternative to these things is destroying your own principality with perpetual war. Along these lines, after Machiavelli wrote THE PRINCE and before he published it, he wrote a small work entitled “The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca” that illustrated the importance of caution and diplomacy instead of endless conquests. The key was that princes should keep the limitations of their successors in mind when planning military campaigns. After all, princes die young sometimes.Nothing clear is presented about how a prince should deal with his subjects. A prince might need to kill them, but should leave their property and women alone. He should disarm them so they can’t overthrow him. But what if the principality is being invaded and he needs armed subjects to help him fight the invaders? Liberality is the quickest way to be despised by the subjects, but they should be given festivals and spectacles. It’s confusing and I may have missed it, but he provides no historical examples of princes that prevented unrest and those who failed to do so.What’s also confusing is what everyone focuses on when they talk about this book. I'm referring to the morality of the prince. Must he have a moral duty, breaking conventional rules only when they interfere with this duty? Or is it permissible for him to be a beast who only cares about his own pleasure and glory? I’m not sure what this book really says about that. However, THE PRINCE is a valuable early work of political science. The method is pretty good. Ideas are developed from axioms of human nature, then backed up with historical examples. It’s worth reading.2.8 stars

I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.

A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text. Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here. This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads. As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era. Thanks!

***some vague spoilers****2.5 STARSWhen I was a teenager, I would have lopped up FIVE FEET APART written by Rachel Lippincott from a screenplay of a movie of the same name premiering March 2019. I loved stories about sick and dying people, no matter how sappy or unrealistic.FIVE FEET APART adds a new twist on sick-lit by adding the very real scenario that two cystic fibrosis patients cannot be within six feet of each other, for risk of life threatening cross-contamination.As as adult, having survived cancer (so far) and being more cynical, I still enjoy sick-lit IF done well including:1. Respect for the illness-realistic portrayal of the illness and side effects (no miracle cures, no using the illness conveniently and forgetting about it when it’s inconvenient to the plot)2. Respect for real sufferers of the illness-characters are more than their illnesses even if the illness occupies a large part of their lives3. Realistic treatments and prognoses4. Realistic medical procedures (I’m okay with fictionalized treatments/meds as long as they have a basis in reality).Although predictable, FIVE FEET APART did all four relatively well, from my perspective of not having the illness. Sufferers may feel differently. Since the screenplay preceded the novel, character development outside CF was lacking. Lippincott gave each character a trait or two and ran with it: Stella organized rule-follower, Poe gay POC, Will artistic rebel. To be fair, CF can be a lifeconsuming illness.FIVE FEET APART, at times felt like tropeapalooza.Instalove: checkPivotal Argument: checkObligatory Death: checkMartyrdom: checkTo be fair, kids dealing with life threatening illnesses live with different timetables than those who don’t. Instalove on a hospital ward between two almost adults dealing with the same illness is more forgivable than in other settings, however the story spans over only a few weeks which feels more like instalove on steroids.I’d be most interested in how teenage CF sufferers felt about the book. They’re main characters in so few books, writers owe them a lot of realism and excellent storytelling. FIVE FEET APART is one of those books I’d have loved as a teen, then reread in my twenties and wondered why I ever liked it.

A novel about teenagers with Cystic Fibrosis? When I was a teenager in the fifties, there was Ellen, a girl in my school who had “something wrong with her lungs”. I remember her coughing, sometimes breathing noisily and sitting on the bench when the rest of us had PE. I remember the adults whispering “So sad” and “She’ll die young”. We stayed away. Maybe death was infectious. Ellen died soon after I graduated. That’s when I found out that it was cystic fibrosis that killed her.Now 60 years later I read about Stella, Will and Poe, normal teenagers, except there is nothing normal about their lives. They are in a hospital struggling to stay alive. The center of the novel is a love story. Stella and Will fall in love for the first time in their lives and grapple with the fact that it can be fatally dangerous to touch each other. But it’s also a story about friendship and it’s these friendships that are deeply moving: the friendship between Stella and Poe, who have spent months and months of their lives in adjoining hospital rooms, between Stella and her friends Mya and Camilla, who come to plan for their senior trip, which Stella won’t be able to attend, between Will and his friends Jason and Hope, who get an hour of private time in Will’s hospital room, and finally between Poe and his friend and lover Michael, who Poe pushes away because he doesn’t want him to get hurt. These friendships are special because they have nothing to do with pitying a person with a fatal disease. They are friends because they are important to each other. I love the kids and their story and I hope that there never will be another Ellen, who is an outsider because people are afraid that she’ll die on them.

I have a child with CF, and I bought this book because of all the hype that I was hearing regarding it. Yes there are some things they stretch regarding CF but I believe it just highlights and raises awareness for this horrible disease that we so need. Worth the read, and my 17 yr old son with CF enjoyed it also. (My son is waiting for a double lung and possibly heart transplant, this is a very scary time in his life, this book helped him feel not so alone, CFers can not “hang out” with each other so it makes for a very lonely disease)

2.5 stars.I sort of flew through this book. I had high expectations going in from the cover alone. With that being said, I did enjoy some parts. Stella was a sort of neat freak, controlling in a good way, character that meant well. Will was your cliche, I don’t care, rebel but he had his reasons behind it.I didn’t like the writing style of this book. I felt like some phrases and idioms were used over and over, possibly for emphasis but I found it annoying. Especially with it being 3 authors behind the book, I definitely expected better. The story itself fell a bit short for me toward the end. I won’t give spoilers but in certain situations, there wasn’t enough detail given. Fingers crossed the movie is better.
