More controversial is Chua’s stereotyping of Chinese and Western cultures, not to mention her authoritarian parenting methods. Critics judged the book largely by asking the following questions: Should self-esteem come before accomplishment, or accomplishment before self-esteem? If the latter, should it be achieved by threats and constant monitoring? Chua’s teenage daughters are undeniably accomplished, but at what emotional cost? While some reviewers found that Chua’s technique borders on abuse and her writing was, at best, self-serving, others were impressed by her parenting results and opined that the West could learn a few things from this remarkably driven Chinese American mother.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues.Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang.Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

Dr. Rotella, through his years of experience with exceptional people, has been able to clearly identify specific characteristics that cause that exceptionality to express. He furthers the idea that "talent" in the conventional sense isn't an inherent gift, and that it is much more the working habits and attitudes of exceptional people that sets them apart. Being exceptional can be taught and learned. He also points out that the cost of exceptionality may not be a price that everyone wants to pay. Dr. Rotella's book is one-of-a-kind and is required reading for those who deal with (or are) standouts in any field.

I was reading this book on a flight to San Francisco & was confused when another passenger handed me some tissue? Only then did I realize tears were streaming uncontrollably down my face. No book has ever caused me to shed a tear, but somehow Rotella had struck a chord that left me publicly sobbing on an airplane of all places! I felt Rotella had written a story of my own life and it was being presented back to me in a way I could understand. Rotella encourages us all to seek our God given abilities / gifts, explore them, and exploit them to their highest levels! For the individual that does not realize their talents, this read may be difficult to comprehend. However, for the individual that understands God has blessed them with something special, in whatever area(s) of life, this book is a must read!!!!! Best book I've read to date!

Not as good as Rob's previous book "The 15th Club". This one is more for Golf Pros, not amateurs or golfers that play for fun and bit of healthy competition. Some points good but overall not a book you would want to read again. The 15th Club is much much better- something that every golfer can relate to.

Rotella is not a "sports psychologist." He was a college teacher and worked with Davis Love and a few others in the 80's. Made his reputation on them and wrote a few books. Very simplistic viewpoints on​ performance.

Anything Bob Rotella writes becomes a masterpiece of art. And this book is no different. They way he breaks down the mind of athletes really intrigues me. And to be able to transfer those though processes over to mine has been a great learning curve. This book is strongly recommended.

As a fan of both golf and self help, this book is an interesting and useful read. There are so many interesting stories about professional athletes and the way the author ties in the self help concepts, its good stuff. Although the book probably could have been 25% shorter, it keeps you interested in the concepts.

Bought this for my football coaching husband and he absolutely loves it. Can't put it down. Sometimes I catch him shaking his head up and down in agreement with what's written. Suggested for anyone who wants a lesson on the mind of very successful people.

Quite inspirational, filled with anecdotes and examples of pros who dedicated themselves to achieving supreme success. A must have if you plan to win. Re-read it to keep your goals fresh.

I purchased three books on foraging for my son's 18th birthday 3 months ago, and this is by far his favorite. He's an avid outdoorsman already and this is the book he keeps in his backpack. He's taken many foraging hikes (2 a week at least) and tried all kinds of wild edible plants. I went with him last week and tried miner's lettuce and a couple other plants. I looked through his book to make sure I wasn't going to eat something poisonous by mistake. I like that it lets you know if there are NO toxic plants you could possibly mix it up (like miner's lettuce). If there is an edible plant that looks similar to a poisonous one it will show you how to definitively identify which it is or recommend not eating it. There are also recipes included and he's tried several. Its a great book and I plan to buy him a couple more from this publisher for other regions. Oh yeah, he's also made soap with some plants that he read about here... Very happy with this purchase.

So many foraging books have so many problems, but Nyerges has really hit the right balance with this book. Good, clear color photos and identification descriptions. Just the right number of plants--too many books are so all-inclusive that you can't pick out the plants you might actually find and use from those that are rare finds and not all that useful. Others have almost nothing in them.His information is accurate, and he wisely includes cautions on plants. (though there was, problematically, no such warning for mustard)I was sorry to see him leave out a couple of important foraging plants such as artichoke thistle (good idea to get those out of the wild environment by foraging them) and the sages. And be aware that this is not a book of useful plants, just edible plants. Thus, plants with medicinal (eg. horehound) and other practical uses are not included. That's fine. This is an excellent foraging guide overall, and as I said, a big improvement over anything we've had up to now.By the way, I have no relationship with the author and don't know him. This is just a review from a fairly savvy forager.

Weighing this against the mushroom identification books that I own, this book comes up strong in some places, but weak overall.Pros: the photographs are large and in color, providing detail when called for; the information given is helpful and obviously from experience; there are numerous features throughout that are helpful, such as the ruler on the back and the grouping of species according to locale in the beginning.Cons: at this price, the book is thin on content; I have paid a similar amount for books with almost 4x as much content (albeit without the beautiful photographs) (see "Mushrooms Demystified" by David Arora). Although this book is meant to focus solely on edible plants, as a previous reviewer had mentioned, it doesn't even cover these comprehensively. Quite frankly, at this price it should be more comprehensive--including some notable medicinal plants would have been nice, and perhaps some poisonous ones to look out for in the field or at least for comparison to look-alikes.This book could also use a branching tree identifier for those unfamiliar with the plant families; when I'm hiking on a hot day, I'm hardly thinking in terms of "eudicot or dicot?". In the absence of such an identification system, it would have been better to organize it differently--by biome or type of food rendered ("berries," "starches," "herbs," etc.).When you compare it to other plant identification books, it appears that this one is among the best. But in my opinion, there is a lot of room for someone to come out with a comprehensive "useful plants" book, because even the best available is lacking.

I thought this was a great book that's of sturdy construction, nice photographs, and useful text. It has details in the plant descriptions that only come from someone who really knows the plants and has used them. I was delighted to find a plant in the book that I previously had considered a noxious weed (Malva Neglecta) on my little piece of land. This plant is so vigorous that it had even survived my scorched earth policy against it. I tried the leaves, stems, and seed pods and they actually tasted really good. What I once scorned and tried to destroy, now adorns my salads. This is a great book for beginners and intermediate. Experts don't need a book like this.

Incredible. I swear, I live in the desert and had NO idea how many edible and beneficial plants surrounded me. This book is EXCELLENT, and a favorite to take with me on hikes. Lots of listings, and lots of useful information on each. If you're curious about nature, into survival, or just wondering what that weed is in your garden (amazingly, you'll likely find it in this book and who knows, maybe be able to eat it), this book will entertain and inform. It's the best single source of information I've seen on edible plants in California.

Thanks to this book, I've identified many of the unknown "weeds" growing in my yard and neighborhood. Even better, I've learned that they're edible! I'm excited to harvest and eat them.Nice glossy color photographs and descriptions. Easy to compare plant photos in the book to the real thing.

This book has useful information, but seems to be written by someone who thinks everyone has had two semesters of college botany. It's approximately 240 pages long and in the first 35 pages I came across the following terms without definition: Chaparral, Riparian Areas, Rhizomes, and Twice Pinnately Divided. I spent more time looking terms up on Wikipedia than I did reading this book. Also, as a beginner, I would like to see more close-up photos of the plants in order to help in identifying them. I'll keep this book and try to 'grow into it'.

I have a copy of Francis' original edition and am using this one updated by Oppenheimer for a course text. However it is also useful and very readable for any scientifically literate person interested in volcanoes.

This book breaks down the mechanics of volcanoes so that anyone with a good understanding of basic geology concepts can understand what is going on. Well written and easy to read.

The book is pretty much as advertised. It is much deeper than the my previous Discovery Channel knowledge, but it's not a full text book that requires prior knowledge. In short, it's a great start into the topic.One of the best parts of the book is that it concludes every chapter by discussion example volcanoes/eruptions to illustrate the topic of the chapter. However, while the book already has many diagrams and pictures, especially the example discussions could be significantly improved with more overview diagrams, aerial photographs and pictures of rocks/deposits/etc.I still do have a few issues with the book. In places it uses a lot of terminology from petrology that is not introduced in the book. While it is probably not necessary to understand the subtle differences between different types of rocks, it might be easier to read if these technical sections would be made simpler.It's still a great book if you are curious about volcanoes.

Even for someone who does not know any Sanskrit, this book is a pleasure. Just read the English translation. It gives such wonderful descriptions, written in ancient times. Like the description of a forest ashram in the opening chapter.I got this book as a way to improve my Sanskrit by reading a great story. By having the English translation right on the facing page, I don't have to look up words, which is a real time saver!There are 5 books published by Clay Library for the Ramayana. I started with this one, Book 3, because Rama's time in the forest is my favorite. He has left his old life and is transformed in the course of his forest sojourn.

Wonderful book, superb translation, amazing story! I just have a curiosity about the deleted section, as this is an abridged version.

This book is one of the classics from Rajaji. It is written in simple English and is a very good read particularly for kids

I Love Indian ancient stories, they inspire even today’s most creative authors with their imagination. Easy to read and follow.

Like the other volumes in this series this volume also gives the original Sanskrit text of Aranya-kanda in Roman script, a very helpful feature. Excellent price, excellent publication.

I bought it for my 9 yrs old kid and he really loved it. This is a very nice and concise book.

I listened to this an audiobook while driving back and forth from Fresno to Sacramento. There was a point where I was laughing so hard that I feared for my safety.Mark Forsyth did a brilliant job of taking the listener/reader through the "figures of rhetoric" by way of great literature and popular music. Certain rhetorical styles simply work, whether they be alliteration (the repetition of sounds) or repetition of the final words or phrases (Epistrophe) or the repetition of the beginning words or phrases (Anaphora). This stuff works and we know it does and we are exposed to it on a daily basis, but we will never remember the technical terms and we barely notice them as they occur all around us.I am a lawyer and I think that knowing the technical terms, and the ideas behind those terms, might help me do intentionally what I am doing unintentionally. I think that others might have a similar experience, but this book is not a technical handbook. It is an enjoyable voyage through the English language, literature and lyrics. Here is an example:"The second kind of pleonasm is quite different. It’s the lazy adjective noun. This is a world of personal friends, added bonuses and free gifts. They are annoying for two contradictory reasons: first of all nobody talks like that, and secondly everybody talks like that. I have never said the words “free gift.” It would seem a sinister thing to say when gathered around the Christmas tree. “Here’s my free gift, and, as an added bonus, here’s a festive Christmas card.” People would think I’d gone mad. Yet, if you wander into a shop or make the terrible mistake of turning on the television or radio, you will hear of havens that are safe, cooperation that is mutual, and prizes that are, it turns out, to be won. Such phrases lumber about the language like zombies. They were created long ago by insanely evil marketing executives who were desperate to progress forward and sell their foreign imports to the general public. But, like Frankenstein’s monster, they could not be stopped. They still lurk in shops and howl from televisions; even though their original inventor is past history."Likewise:"There are people who would find that line inspiring. They would read it and run off to live better lives of purity and holiness up a hill somewhere. There are others who would find it infuriating. Twice. They would read it and as they did so the veins would stand out on their furious foreheads, the saliva would drip from their maddened mouths, and they would take a big red marker pen out of their pockets and delete two words. First, there’s the word “up.” What other direction can you lift something? It’s almost as bad as “fall down” or “enter into.” It is (some would say) an insult to the intelligence and an abuse of the English language. But it’s not nearly as bad as “from whence.” Whence means from where. So what does “from whence” mean? “From from where”? It’s enough to make you shoot yourself, and then write an angry letter to the paper. People who think like this lead terrible lives. They have never married, simply because they couldn’t bear to hear the words: Dearly beloved, we are gathered together in the sight of God, and in the face of this congregation, to join together this man and this woman in Holy Matrimony . . . They can’t enjoy Hamlet because of the unnecessary “that” in “To be or not to be, that is the question.” And they can’t even throw themselves in front of a train and put an end to their lives of misery and woe, because they’re not sure about railway tracks."Pleonasms can be fun.Language can be fun.

This sentence describing a dismal dinner is, says Mark Forsyth, "perhaps the greatest anadiplosis" ever written:"If the soup had been as warm as the wine, and the wine as old as the fish, and the fish as young as the maid, and the maid as willing as the hostess, it would have been a very good meal."The anadiplosis, a figure of speech where the last word in a phrase or sentence becomes the first word in the next, is but one of 39 such rhetorical devices that Forsyth, who blogs as The Inky Fool, wittily describes in "The Elements of Eloquence: Secrets of the Perfect Turn of Phrase," released in the USA in October 2014 by Berkley Books. In it he uses ample examples of deft phrasings from Shakespeare, Churchill, Oscar Wilde, Lennon & McCartney and more to explicate all manner of trope.In it you will learn that syllepsis results from using one word in two incongruous ways, as did Dorothy Parker when commenting on her small apartment: "I've barely enough room to lay my hat and a few friends."And that isocolon employs "two clauses that are grammatically parallel, two sentences that are structurally the same," as Winston Churchill did in describing Field Marshall Montgomery: "In defeat, unbeatable; in victory, unbearable."The book is a treasure for writers, public speakers, boulevardiers and anyone who wants to sound smart and witty. As Forsyth posits: "For though we have nothing to say, we can at least say it well."To say that his book is not without its uses would be, I learned, an example of litotes, understatement that results from affirming something that denies its opposite." As when, says Forsyth, Emperor Hirohito announced to his people, after two atomic bombs had been dropped on them, that "the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage."This is a fine book, a great read and a valuable reference.

Wow. I am an engineer. I always found that some phrases, speeches, and personal notes really reached me, but I never understood the technique of rhetoric. Forsyth describes a couple of dozen in a witty commentary which first defines, then gives examples and often used within his commentary. I will never remember the names of many, but I have new respect for those who are eloquent and new tools to communicate myself.

The author has brought together the most common, and some not so common, figures of speech and literary devices to enable the reader to understand them and see how they have been utilized by writers, great and small (no merism intended), to give their writings depth, meaning, and whimsy. We all sense it when we read interesting and arresting (no alliteration intended) literature. But we often don't know why the passage, or poem, or prose captures and captivates us. Well, this book will tell you why and you will be dazzled and delighted. It will also help you in your interpretation of literature. Someone has said, "you don't know what a text means, until you know how it means." In other words, meaning is locked up in the way the text has been put together in terms of its grammar, syntax, and literary artistry. Once you understand the "how" of its construction, the meaning appears. This book will show you the "how" of the text's construction. The author has a great style of writing that always keeps your interest and he fills his pages with numerous examples of the figure or device he is describing. So, hurry and get this book. It will make you a better writer and a better reader - two goals for the price of one.

This was one of the most interesting, enlightening books that I have read in awhile! My bachelor's degree is in biological sciences, but I am a civil rights lawyer, so I appreciated her approach that touched on not just the science, but also public policy and human rights issues implicated by waste and sanitation practices. Definitely a book for people who are fans of anything written by Mary Roach- it's not a PhD dissertation, of course, but it does a pretty great job at at least opening the door (and then some) on any single issue discussed in the book. Chapters are more or less organized by country and the issues faced there currently and historically. I got some weird looks every time someone asked what I was reading at the pool this summer, but it also sparked some frank, interesting conversations with others who recognize the tremendous importance of these issues, worldwide. Since this book is heavy on annual statistics, my only very minor issue is that in 2016, some of the information was a bit dated or left me wanting to know updated statistics, for example, whether certain countries met NGO/WHO goals for sanitation by whatever year that has now passed- not a criticism of the book, as I was aware that this book was a bit dated by the time I picked it up. Highly recommended, nonetheless!

If you are a teenager and have activist tendencies, this book will make you consider dedicating your life to sanitation improvement around the world. Rose George opened my eyes to a sad, painful issue--one that should make every leader of every country both ashamed and motivated to deal with human waste in a more responsible manner. The Big Necessity is all about pee and poop and how the mismanagement of its disposal is causing millions of deaths world wide each year. It is a tough book to read but one that everyone needs to know about. Hooray for Ms George. Her Nine Pints book is next.

People in the 1st world may not realize that people in the 3rd world need sanitation more than anything else. If they can get toilets - and by toilet, we mean a hole in the ground with privacy and safety, they can achieve better health. Better health translates immediately among the poor to less sick time and higher income. Higher income means money for education and other things that will improve lives for the next generation. This book points out that well-meaning Americans or Europeans can build a school in Africa, even pay a teacher's salary, but if there is no girls' toilet safe from prying eyes, the girls can't go to school. This book really explores the problem, and shows why you can't just "build them toilets". It is a process of education. In India, there is a movement for "open defecation free" (ODF) villages. ODF is a health issue, a development issue, a women's issue. If people are hungry, and you give them access to toilets, it is the same as giving them food: They suffer less malnutrition because they suffer less diarrhea. Next time you want to give to a charity that gives laptops to slum children, give to a charity that gives them toilets instead.

This book is full of information that I never knew existed. May be more than I ever wanted to know. It is a topic most people don't want to discuss. However I often wondered how this 'Big Necessity" is handled, not only here in the US but abroad. The enormity is mind boggling. This book will make one think how fortunate we in the US are to have sanitary systems in place that are monitored and strictly managed. Some of the practices around the world will shock the readers but leave them more aware of the importance of a well run sanitation program in cities as well as in the country. It's hard to say I enjoyed reading about the 'Big Necessity" but I would recommend the book.. However, don't plan on discussing the topic with all audiences. I'm looking forward to our book club's discussion. We are all retired nurses who are well versed in the topic. It should prove enlightening. I know this sounds strange but I really enjoyed the book.Our city museum has a traveling exhibit running now on 'Poop' I plan on attending this afternoon. Wouldn't have given it a second thought before I was exposed to this book.

This is a book, on its face, that deals with a subject most people never want to discuss….human waste. However, with 7 billion people on the planet, it is going to occur and more likely than not, it is going to wind up polluting a river, a food supply, or some other area vital to human survival.The author deals with the subject matter by traveling the world and examining the various methods of disposal used, as well as the technologies that are available to safely dispose of the massive amount of excreta produced every day around the world. And it is a lot! She travels from Japan, who seem to have a toilet fetish, to India where people go where and when they want, to the United States, which appears to be the only country that won't call the bodily process of elimination what it is. We use every euphemism in the book to be able to keep the toilet word out of the conversation.A combination tale of political incompetence and corruption to a review of the technological fixes available, and needed, this book is a very important read for all of us, but particularly environmentalists striving to get clean water to 3rd world countries. They might just be better off getting safe disposal methods to these places prior to trying to establish clean water supplies. It is a book that I highly recommend!

The book was easy reading and full of information. Well written to the point that you remembered ideas and facts, and could share them with others. Minus 1 star because the author spent too much time talking about sanitation problems in India & Africa. The focus was on individuals taking on "watsat" problems and not enough on the big picture. Definitely would recommend to others. The author has written also written "NINE PINTS". A terrific book about the money, medicine, and mysteries of the blood.

A must read for anyone who wishes to appreciate the structure and dynamics of polymeric materials!

I discovered this text my senior year of college, and I just purchased a personal copy now that I'm starting my graduate work. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in polymer physics.

If I differ with the other reviews on this page, it's only about whether to think of this book as limited to polymer physics. The conventional wisdom today is to equate theoretical physics with string theory, just as a generation ago it was equated to particle physics. The conventional wisdom is wrong, as usual. This book is an elegant instance of theoretical physics. Sure, it's applied to the somewhat practical field of polymers, in which moreover one can do experiments (unlike string theory) that don't require acts of Congress to fund (unlike particle physics). But don't let that fool you -- it's theoretical physics at its most imaginative and aesthetically pleasing. Scaling arguments might seem pretty common today, but De Gennes was ahead of the curve, and the tools he needed were very modest. Seeing how he thought about the problem is what makes reading this book more than just reading a book about polymers. He later extended this brilliant theoretical re-envisioning to things like liquid crystals, granular matter, splashes, and drying drops of water (having earlier been interested in magnetism and superconductivity). If more aspiring theoreticians were to encounter this book as undergrads or as young grad students, they might realize that there's plenty of intellectual fun to be had on earth, and not just on 6-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds.

The late professor de Gennes was frequently described as a modern Newton. While the comparison is surely ill-grounded, de Gennes has a premium place in the pantheon of Physics for his far-fetched contributions to so many areas of physics (ranging from superconductors, to biology, and, of course, gels and polymer physics).In the introduction to his book, Prof. de Gennes clearly states that he wrote it with the theoretically-oriented scientist as well as the experimentalist in mind. Indeed, the book was written at a time the subject was rocketting and developping at a brisk pace ; de Gennes' aim through this work was to make the many results obtained and their various theoretical interpretations available to the guys who, in the end, made all this progress possible.Note that the book was The one to learn all that stuff, as polymer physics had a great deal flourished with the work of a group of French scientists (at the CEA lab).The sections of this book summarize the properties of polymers and the models that were devised to explain those.The final chapter is on the renormalization group.On the whole, the book is indeed also a great introduction to general methods in soft condensed matter (random-walk, a little field theory, phase diagrams, and so on).Needless to say, it has also become a classic in polymer science.Rightly so.
