My hope for Katie Beers is that the telling of her story is not only healing for her but freeing for others and that it will lead to her capture (who can be paroled anytime) to remain safely behind bars.

This book tells the true story of Katie Beers. As a child she was kidnapped and held for 17 days. Her kidnapper seemed to think he was saving her from a family who didn't care for her as they should. She was not given the love and care she should have by her family, but he certainly didn't make things better for her. She was abused sexually at home and by the kidnapper. His treatment of Katie will make you sick! I won't go into her treatment,but you will be amazed that this little girl could with stand what he put her thru. Katie is a survivor!

This is such a thorough telling of what happened in the case of Katie Beers...it was difficult to read at times, but just goes to show the horrific nature of what happened to get, but the resilience of her constitution. The events were delivered well and respectfully, with her own words and inside perspective, as well as outside perspectives and actual letters of those involved. I could not put it down! I'm impressed every time I had a question, it was answered....and I am glad they added pictures to further satiate curiosity and bring her story to life. It's important for everyone to understand how community needs to rally together and protect those who cannot protect themselves. This is written for the more casual or younger fan. It includes some decent diagrams, and SOME good background info, but really misses the chance to create some good background detail. For example, any astute fan knows there are significant differences between the E-11 balusters used by the stormtroopers in the OT films, but this book doesn't mention that at all. The included drawing ONLY includes a dawning of the blaster as used in ROTJ. Similar situations exist for the DL-44 blaster... One of the most iconic weapons of the whole Star Wars saga. Yeah, it's super nerd detail, but that's who should benefit from a book like this.

The revised version of the Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology builds on the success of the original, adding in color 3D renderings of selected weapons and technologies, adding updated information from Episodes 1-3 and more recent novels. For Star Wars fans, there is a broad array of new general information to fill in where the previous version left off. Unfortunately, this update comes with less detailed schematics, typographical errors, and a feeling of adequacy in the place of the satisfaction that a Star Wars nerd/junkie/enthusiast would expect from such a publication. Recommended audience would be new gen SW fans and moderate fans that want to know more about the SW universe.

Nice Diagrams, a few VERY good light saber comparison pages, nice description of companies that make the weaponry but mostly underwhelming with little information or obvious information on the actually weapons as well as very poor renders of the few that were rendered. I never got the original of this book but I did have the original Essential guide to vehicle's and vessels and it was MUCH better with no render only black and white artist sketches as well as more interesting diagrams.

Now I know why everyone thought the Death Star's thermal exhaust port was in it's equatorial trench, despite the movie clearly showing it was NOT there. This is the book that created that false perception. Fun to flip through otherwise, but when I saw that error my eye twitched a little.

The essential guides series where some of my favorites growing up. I love collecting them. I would just sit for hours slowly going through and reading all of the technical details. The creativity is endless. And the schematics and drawings are so fun. Love these books.

I am always looking for Tofu recipes and this book has tons of them and they are good. Biggest con for me is that the ingredients are printed in a small light grey type which is nearly impossible to see. I don’t know what the publisher was thinking.

I'm sure these recipes are great, but I'll never know for sure. I can't read the ingredient list as the type is a light grey. I don't know what the publisher was thinking.The side tips are written in a reasonable font and type so those are easy to see, but the actual ingredients who knows what it says! My eyes hurt.

You can't get a better introduction to Earth sciences than this. It is told by way of the history of earth itself, starting with the Big Bang. It is beautifully designed, so that even a single pair of large pages offers a wealth of thought provoking information. Photographs, diagrams, history, text, are used in a consistent way for all of the many topics covered. The book has a detailed index, as well as in-chapter cross references. It also has something you almost never see--a to-scale timeline of all history--showing how very recent we and all we know are.

This is an incredibly beautiful book, and it is full of fascinating information about the world we live in. Though I bought this as a resource for homeschool, I have spent quite a bit of time just looking at it and enjoying it on my own. It's too advanced to teach from for second grade, but the pictures can speak to anyone if any age, and it will still be good in a few years for teaching. I highly recommend this book to anyone. You will not regret the purchase!

I'll admit - I'm a sucker for coffee table books. Especially this series of Smithsonian books from DK. I call them "channel surfing" books, in that you can pick one up, open any page, learn something and pick another random page, etc... Great stuff!

A lot of work went into the making of this very educational book. I have purchased a copy for my son-in-law and also, my daughter has her copy. It would be beautiful even if it were just placed on a coffee table, however when you open the cover a whole new world opens up in an easy to read and understandable style. Should anyone have a thirst for knowledge and a love of nature this is the book for him/her.

About the Author

Katie Sherrod is a laywoman in the Diocese of Fort Worth. She is an independent writer, video producer and commentator. She wrote and produced Women of the Table, a 20-minute documentary about ministries of both lay and ordained women in the Episcopal Church which premiered at the 2003 General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Minneapolis. She was given the Magadalen Award of the Episcopal Women’s Caucus at General Convention 2006. She has won several awards in newspaper, radio and TV including the Dallas Press Club Award for her 2001 PBS documentary Freedman’s Cemetery Memorial: A Place of Healing, narrated by Alfre Woodard; and the Exceptional Media Merit Award from the National Women's Political Caucus. She was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1987 for outstanding contributions in the field of communications, and named Texas Woman of the Year in 1989. She is married to the Rev. Gayland Pool, an Episcopal priest.

This is a profoundly moving account of Jesus' crucifixion, seen through the eyes of the women in attendance. This is the second year that the Bible Study group at my church has used the book as a source of shared reading. It is frequently the cause of tears--both during the ghastly cruelty of the Roman soldiers and, of course, at the end. The structure of these speeches is based on the Stations of the Cross, told in the first person,each voice distinct. It is a remarkable piece of work and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the beginnings of the Christian faith.

For the past three years, my Episcopal church has used Katie Sherrod's meditations as the basis for our Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. This year I had the privilege of producing a pilgrimage for our congregation using this material. As the 'pilgrims' reached each station,they were greeted by a woman in a shawl and other props (mop bucket, seashells, etc.) and the woman told her story, using Ms. Sherrod's words. We heard from the Crippled Woman, the Syrophonecian Mother, the Adultress and others. The last three Stations tell the story through the words and hearts of Mary Magdalene and Mary the Mother of Jesus.This was the most meaningful experience I have ever witnessed at the Stations of the Cross, and I believe the same can be said for others in attendance.Next year, I hope to create the same journey, figuring a way to include the other 3 meditations that are not connected to a Station. Thank you, Ms. Sherrod, for a task extremely well-done.

I recently took my NBDHE and this book was very helpful to review for this important test! They have excellent quizzes at the end of each chapter that allow you to assess how much you know and has great info to go back in that chapter to review what you aren’t sure about!

Spent a good 10 minutes flipping through pages removing bookmark stickies from it, but other than the bottom right corner being kind of mangled, the book is in good shape for a used book.

I didn't end up using this at all! It was too much detail for me. I had a board review book that worked much better. I would return it if I still could. I never even used the code inside.

The book is very informative but I just cannot get behind the page organization. The pages have way too much information crammed into one spot. Also, the tables/graphs for one section is many times 1-3 pages later.If you have a choice, I would recommend Wilkins' textbooks.

This book is a very noble effort at a photographic field guide to Indian birds. Not surprisingly, the quality of the photos varies from excellent to marginal-at-best; a few species could not possibly be intentified from the photos provided. Having said that, this book does contain several valuable features lacking from the other Indian bird guides. The range maps are displayed along with each species, with symbols and notes on the relative rarity of each species. Another very nice feature is the inclusion of the older, common (English) names which is great for those who have birded in India for awhile. I also like the smaller size and portablility of this book. The bottom line: if you are going to take one bird field guide to India, I wouldn't take this one- the Grimmett/Inskipps or Kazmeirczak "non-photo" guides are better bets. However, if you are a serious birder and don't mind packing two bird books, I'd highly recommned taking this one along to supplement the information in the other field guides.

THE BASICS:softcover, 750+ color photos of medium size show 668 species of the subcontinent; multi color range maps show the entire regionTHE REVIEW:Princeton has put out a few books that follow this same photo guide format. It should be noted this book is not a complete guide. It shows only 668 (45%) of the region's nearly 1,500 species. However, this book does illustrate more species than any other single photo-book available for the subcontinent. Most of the birds are shown with a single color photo. About 10% of the birds have two photos.The selection of photos is good for 85-90% of the birds. These photos show the bird in good light and in the open for a clear view. Some of these birds are displayed a bit small but generally well enough to be identified. The remaining 10-15% of the photos are of low quality. These are often too small, too dark, too grainy, too obscured, or too indistinct to allow proper identification of the bird. Some photos appear to be included merely because it was the only photo immediately available. Since most of the birds have only one photo which is often of the adult male, this book won't be helpful for immature birds, various races, or many of the females.Each of the birds receive a 1-2 short paragraphs of text that cover description, voice, and habits. The description, composed of 8-12 short lines, takes up about half of the text. These descriptions offer some details but are not in-depth enough to reliable for identifying many of the similar species. The section on habits covers habitat preference and some behavioral notes. The voice is generally described in 2-4 short lines.Each bird receives the same map of the Indian subcontinent (Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka), containing two colors: Red for resident or breeding summer visitor and blue for non-breeding winter visitor. The ranges shown for the birds artificially stop at the political boundaries of these countries and do not show where the birds range might normally occur outside the area.Will this book be useful for a trip to India or the adjacent countries? Yes, but keep in mind the limitations that (a) less than half the species are shown and (b) only one of the plumages is shown. For a birding trip to India, you'll want to use one of the complete field guides, a couple of which are very good. Use this photo guide to help prepare for your trip and then rely on an illustrated guide for your field excursions. I have been married to a Filipina for almost 26 years,and have worked with a large group of Filipinos for longer than that and still have failed to grasp some of parts of their culture.My wife was born in the Philippines,and emigrated to the US at an early age,but her family still follows Filipino tradition.I have only visited the Philippines once so far,but have plans to return in the near future.This book clears up a lot of my confusion.To someone new to the Filipino culture,this book will be a great tool in helping to understand their ways.I particularly was interested in the "What should I call him or her" chapter. Thanks for clearing up some confusion i that regard.I have always felt that I was offending my inlaws when I visited,and turned down an offer for food or drink,and often have eaten just because I felt it the right thing to do.In more than 26 years,my father in law has never failed to offer me a beer when I entered his home,and I found out that he often didn't even have beer in the house and would send someone to the store if I accepted his offer. He's 92 years old now and still offers!I now have a little more insight as to when I should accept offers of hospitality.

Absolutely the best guide that I have found to discover the Philippines from a fellow American who is living the life. I have been married to a Filipino for 8 years and learned more about understanding her and her culture from reading this book than from her. There are just things out there that Filipinos can not explain properly to a 'Western' person but Bob Martin is one of us and has a unique way of explaining it in a way for all of us can understand.

It would have helped me tremendously and I wouldn't have had to learn some things about the Filipino people the hard way. In fact reading this book even helped me to understand some things about my wife and her family. Why they may act a certain way & why they do the things that they do that don't really make sense to me. If I visit the Philippines again I will be sure to read this before I go as a refresher. Well thought out and written, it explains complicated cultural issues in a way that the "foreigner" can understand.

A must have for Flight physiology

Excellent book, fast shipping. The progression of the content flows allowing for easy referencing and review, very concise yet in depth explanations. This book is an asset to my library

I bought this book in prep for the FP-C exam and found it to be very well written. It's not an entertaining book, but if you are looking for cold hard knowledge about flight medicine, this is an excellent book. Since I have read it, many have borrowed it from me and tell me the same. It's bare bones medicine with no fluff. I would not recommend this for anyone who is new to the field.

This is a good book overall, if you can handle what is otherwise a very dry read. There aren't many textbooks for critical care out there like this one and because of that it is an invaluable resource. Nonetheless, it is very hard to read through and could use some spicing up.Very informative on everything from advanced airway procedures, cardiac care, and transport pharmacology. Excellent section on peds as well.

We are reviewing the CD that comes with this book and after 67 questions, we have come across 4 wrong answers! Unacceptable!!!We paid good money for a poorly reviewed information. Unacceptable!!

I used the book to help pass an interview and reference other materials versus this read. Very dry read, but found some obscure information I was looking for here. Highly suggest the book for the station, as people seem to pick it up often when subtle disagreements on facts/treatments occur. By the way, it helped me get the job.

This book contains actual step-by-step photos showing how to complete various techniques, not just vague directions or pictures of finished pieces that leave you wondering how they were made. So many different techniques are covered, my biggest dilemma is deciding which one to try first.

Big disappointment. The intriguing cover quilt aside, this book should have been titled “Making Chenille.” I had envisioned layers of transparency perhaps? Doing something other than stitching flat layers of fabrics in grids and slitting? (I made one baby quilt in a rag/chenille method, and that was enough.) The second half of the book showed sculptural pieces, apparently mostly stacked squares of muslin. I’m requesting to return my copy.

Ann Small has more tricks up her sleeves for anyone doing surface design, art quilts and those of us that love to experiment! She’s looked at many cultures and their relationship with textiles. She even brought some old processes that feel new with phenomenal hand dyes and artist’s sensibilities in her pieces.This is one to read, then put on your reference shelf under Inspiration. OR IF YOU GOT ANOTHER ISSUE AS A KINDLE BOOK AND ARE HAVING THE SAME FORMATTING ISSUES THAT IM HOPING WILL BE IRONED OUT VERY VERY SOON. When the digital issue is fixed your phone or notebook/ iPads will give you great enjoyment (and have a sketchbook & pen ready as your creative juices will get flowing!)And yes. I realize it is strange to have an embarrassment of riches in all this computer power at my fingertips and I still rely on paper and if missing a pen or pencil, use anything that will make a mark before the idea is gone. I just hate the skinny hard tip of the Apple Pencil on Gorrilla glass covering the screens. (If anybody knows an alternative that makes that process more tolerable or could I hope for a solution altogether?!! Please, let me know!)

Absolutely luscious book! Can't put it down because it is so beautiful. Wonderful, innovative ideas for manipulating fabric. Stunning photos of projects and finished items. Would maybe not recommend for a beginner to sewing.

Such a long time since I picked up an art technique book that inspired me to do this technique. I did learn it many years ago on my C&G course in the UK but it was never as exciting or well done as Ann has produced it here. Congrats Ann.

Overall this book is very complete.The book first discusses the importance of heart rate training. Then it covers the definitions of aerobic and anaerobic exercise and the how the body adapts to training in both. Further on the book goes over had to calculate maximum heart rate, including various methods such as the VO2 test and the 220-age.In addition, the authors cover how to calculate training zones from the maximum heart rate. And the pros and cons of training within the zones. Finally, the book provides training plans, for swimming, running, biking, and rowing.Overall, this book is essential for anyone looking to increase their performance or is just getting started.

I started running 2 years ago at age 64. Even though I'm not trying for speed, I always do want to get a little faster and better at running. I joined a few running groups and the trainers said run and you will get better. I was running with 20 and 30 year olds...got a bit frustrated and got an ankle injury in the process. Even though it was a Couch to 5K beginner training, I sure didn't run with any Couch people..LOL This book, along with my Garmin sport watch that has a Heart Rate Monitor in it, explained to me what I was doing wrong and how to do things the safe way. I now run by heart rate and not Pace as much. I'm improving slowly and enjoying it more because I understand what is happening and where my danger zone is and where the best heart rate is for the maximum improvement for my efforts. For me it has made a big difference. This book explains so much andI am so glad I found it.

Lovely book. The book explains very well how to use your heart rate to train for any endurance activity. It explains on a very scientifically technical level, as well as in a plain layman level and also a with some short cuts along the way if you feel the workouts/ programs are way to long. It explains when you should transition and the intermediate transition phase.But the best part about the book besides its lucid explanation and detailing is it very clearly educates you how to make your own training program and not having to follow their own. A customized training plan which fits in your schedule and requirements with some reference from their own works perfect.I would say its works perfect for me and would definitely recommend it at any level of training.CON:The only con to the book is that it all its examples are those of Running or runners. Heart rates, sample workouts. If they could have mixed it up a bit might benefit a lot more people. That's where it loses half a star.

I think I have read every book about training there is, and this is the best as far as using heart rate to base your workouts on. It is a well written book, with straigth foward practical advice, but presented with humor. I have been really trying to obey his guidelines the past few months, and have changed my training in ways that I wouldn't have without this book. I still make the mistakes of going too hard on my easy days, and probably too hard on my interval days, but at least I now have a very clear idea of what I am supposed to do and why. This is an easy to read book that explains much of the science behind the main workouts that most runners do, and is valuable knowledge. There is probably a lot of pages that won't be read by everyone, since he details training programs for several sports, but there isn't a lot of filler stuff. The science is described in enough detail that you understand what you have to, but not so much that you fall asleep. Some heart rate training books seem sort of wimpy, but this book doesn't ease up on you, and is actually a good pep talk for going out and running hard. Now I am always thinking of his advise to not neglect the "bone crushers". I think it is a must read for any athlete of any level. I wish this book had been written years ago when heart rate monitors were just coming out.

If your an old athlete like me, give this new heart rate training a look. My daughter gave us a pair of fitbits, now I can train properly. Good solid book. Match your needs or sport then get after it. Modern technology who knew it would work for all athletes. Really great read.

I've been a runner off and on for years. But have largely made the same mistake repeatedly -- I get too enthusiastic, train too hard and too fast without a proper base and get injured. Recently, I bought a Garmin Heart Rate Monitor and was very much enjoying using it. But it was more of a passive device, recording what I'd done and not really useful in planning workouts. This book revolutionized by thinking about running and my approach to my heart rate monitor. It not only has detailed training plans for the most common races - 5k thru Marathon. But it walks you through the logic and biochemistry of why it's best to train as outlines. As a result I've changed my training and am trying to follow their plan as outlined, which looks easy on paper, but is surprisingly humbling.Highly, highly recommend this book!

Prior to this book, the one book on heart rate training that I always referred to was Heart Monitor Training for the Compleat Idiot by John L. Parker. It was a brilliant book that used layman's terms to talk about the concepts involved with heart rate monitor training, but it focused mostly on running.Now this book expands on some of the concepts of training zones and glycogen production and storage, and provides sample training programs (including Fartlek) that one can use for their training. I'm primarily a runner, but will often swim or cycle for fun and also like to use the rowing machine on occasion. Some of the programs for running are helpful for me in tweaking some of my zones so that I'm not over-doing it on most days.Kudos to the authors too for not steering readers to one particular brand of heart rate monitor. A decade ago, consumers had very few choices in heart rate monitors (Polar), but today there are quite a few choices out there (Polar, Garmin, Suunto, etc), many of which allow you to program the training sessions in this book directly in to the watch.
