The Best American Comics 2007, by Anne Elizabeth Moore

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Comics make a second outing in the venerable Best American series, with nary a fluttering cape in sight. This collection isn't about such heroes or villains, it's about humor, fear, the finely observed details of life, and things of a generally more personal and less world-threatening nature. That (as well as a predilection toward Midwestern artists) is what you get when Ware (Acme Novelty Library) is guest editor. The book includes work from 39 different artists, but it's hard to find a weak entry, even if the editors are cheating a bit by including sections from already thunderously (and rightly) acclaimed book-length works like Charles Burns's Black Hole, Miriam Katin's We Are on Our Own and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home. Gilbert Hernandez contributes a particularly funny bit of his patented soap opera-comedy, while Adrian Tomine's selection from Optic Nerve, an epic of self-loathing and confusion, shows why he's one of the comics artists best worth watching. There are plenty of familiar names, and though the roster of usual suspects is starting to make comics anthologies look like annual class reunions, Ware has done a particularly good job here of celebrating the greatest, saddest and bravest in American comics. Two things caught my attention scanning through the Best American Comics of 2007. The first was that it was edited by the multitalented Chris Ware and the second was a story by Gilbert Hernandez about a gigantically breasted woman. The later will get my attention every time. I found the 2006 Best Comics to be a big disappointment and I considered the possibility that perhaps one year just wasn't enough time to come up with 300+ pages of alternative comics. However, I put my faith in Mr. Ware (who also edited the fantastic `McSweeney's Issue 13') and bought the 2007 book with hopes of major improvements. The cool thing about these anthologies is that it's like eating at a buffet. You can sample all sorts of different items and if you don't like something move onto the next. If you really enjoy a particular artist you might just pick up other things they've produced. The overall quality in the 2007 edition is higher than last year but I have to confess that nothing in this book jumped out at me and I only discovered a couple of artists I might look into further. In the opening section Chris Ware mentions one of the criticisms of these kinds of comics, that the artists tend to engage in a lot of naval gazing. Well, recognizing the problem doesn't make it go away and there is an unfortunate amount of depressing self introspection about how sad and lonely the artists lives are. I also have to say that this collection features some of the most primitive art I've yet to see in any of these anthologies with some looking like they were scratched out during lunch period at junior high. What this collection didn't have was any stories that I was wishing would just end which sets it apart from the 2006 collection.I would like to give special mentions to Jonathan Bennett and Kevin Huizenga who I felt had the best art in the book. David Heatley's short pieces may be the most memorable as he puts ink to actual dreams he's had. I'll give the award for most interesting story to Kim Deitch for `No Midgets in Midgetville'. I would put this collection somewhere in the middle of alternative comic anthologies. It's not as good as `An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories' but much better than BAC 2006.

I still think McSweeney's issue 13 is the best comics anthology of recent years, and when I saw the first (2006) edition of Best American Comics in a store I freaked out. I was delighted to see that Best American Comics 2007 was edited by Chris Ware and was hoping for some of the magic of McSweeney's 13. So because I was expecting this book to exist it didn't have the magic that the 2006 edition, which was a complete surprise, had for me. But I still really liked it. The introduction was chock full of OTHER stuff I wrote down to find online or in stores, the Alison Bechdel piece was a real standout ("Fun Home" is definitely on my wishlist now), and I'm such a fan of Ivan Brunetti that I was really glad he got several pages interspersed through the book.

Full of unnecessary nudity and sexual themes. I do not, nor do I see anybody else needing to bother with story lines like this.

Boook was very strange and so were the comics in it. My husband is a comic freek and I thought book would be cool for him. The Book was not what I was thinking and not how it's info blurb made it sound.

A solid collection that is organized very well. The anthology has works ranging from the autobiographical (which in his introduction, Chris Ware notes is a staple of these kinds of collections) to the fantastic to the esoteric. Each piece is graphically beautiful in its own way, sort of like different dialects of the same language. Introspection and inner dialogues are the chief modes of communication in these stories, which if you think about it is pretty logical for the comics medium.Favorites of mine include: C. Tyler's sad reflections on raising her daughter in the eighties when she says "your time was completely mine", Anders Nilsen's minimalist forest fantasy in which birds comment to each other on the actions of a human wanderer, Gilbert Hernandez's sordid tale of sexy people, Ben Katchor's telling of the metaphysical prowess of shoehorns, Ron Rege Jr.'s love rectangle as only he can tell it, and C.F.'s insane story of a boy who morphs into beams of color after being pursued. While each of the works is impressive some of the artists are guilty of being too repetitive, of not leaving their comfort zones. There's also something thematically distinct in each of the stories that make them "American" comics. I mean, there's a war going on and there's not a single comic addressing that fact. Tales of human suffering, tragedy and sacrifice are instead tales of personal shortcomings, quiet reflections on the human condition, or nostalgia for times past. Which is fine (art doesn't have to address war or any of that), just noteworthy to me for some reason. Personally, I would like to see more storytelling risks and more fiction rather than biographical uniformity. This goes for comics in general, not only the ones presented here

Loved it! Brad Gilbert have a really analytic way of looking at tennis, which make it easy to implement his strategies. His mantra is "always observe and analyse". Some of the quotes that helped me with my game was these:"Develop your powers of observation and analyse and then use the information, and your chances of winning will go up by 20 percent or more.""The Game Plan: This process of review will lead me right into the equally important process of planning my strategy; 1. What do I want to make happen? 2. What do I want to prevent from happening?""Most recreational players watch a match like they're looking at somebody play Nintendo at a video arcade. They just stare. I'd watch a match like I was studying for a history test."About John McEnroe: "He was a very smart and observant tennis player. He was always aware of the dynamics of the match and was looking for ways to exploit your weaknesses."

I originally bought this books a few years back. I had mentioned it to my friend at time who said it was a waste of time to read it and I should just play my own game. Mind you this is the same guy that beats me evertime we play. Well I decided to purchase the kindle and audio version a few weeks back. I must say, I should have read this book years ago. I never really took into account the mental part of the game. I was a grinder and just pounded away on the courts and hope I would win. I now look at my opponents in a whole different light now. I play the mental game more than the physical. I now keep a notebook and make notes on my opponants. This book is must read. The irony of all this is that opponent that told me not to read the book was playing the mental game. Turns out he had read it and did not want me to get any advantage from reading the book. Let's just say after reading the book I have beat him on a number of occasions now.

Really good book about strategy and mental preparation not only for tennis but also for other single-player sports like racquetball, squash, golf, etc. I highly recommend it for players who are really interested in improving his/her game. My unique negative feeling is related to the fact that the first edition of the book was written about 1992 and all examples and comments are with players like McEnroe, Lendl, Becker, Sampras, Agassi (all of them are of course legends of the sport) but for readers of the 21th century examples discussing the strategies and styles used by Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, etc. would be more attractive. Any way, the basic principles still remain the same.

The ideas Brad Gilbert shares on how to improve the mental side of the game are both practical and challenging. The approach Brad recommends sound simple but require deep concentration and analytical thinking. Fortunately Brad has done much of the analysis to help in various real world situations. Our task is to assess the situation, and then execute these tactics effectively. That is much harder to do than say, of course. The entertaining real world stories and examples, while slightly dates, are timeless.

I just finished reading the books and have already started applying the lessons to my play...and it is working. Gilbert covers multiple aspects of the game from how to prepare for competition before you're even near a court to how to pack your bag to how to handle multiple situations while playing and maximize your strengths and capitalize on their weaknesses. I especially enjoyed the tips on how to change up the game when you are behind, keep focused under distraction, and deal with hookers, turtles, and pushers. I am currently a 3.0 tennis player so have allot learn from a club pro, but even so, his advice has already improved my play. In particular, I am better now at return of serve, lobs, and remembering to "get the ball earlier."The book was generally fun to read, well-written, and worth the time if you're looking to improve your game. I could see how his advice could be extremely valuable for a high level player or young person with allot of talent but not allot of strategy. I played racquetball for many years and this advice could have helped out allot!!!!! Finally, I loved the advice for the over 35 player and am remembering profilactic ibuprofen and Tiger Balm.

I started playing tennis at 33 years old. Get classes every week and really improved my technique and shots. I have played sports my whole live, so even though I started late in tennis, I manage to develop a descent style. However when it came to a match I always lose, sometimes with players I believe had worst technique than mine. I notice sometimes it took me up to a set (one I always lose) to get into the game, and then put some challenge in the second set.I started browsing the Internet for a book that could teach me strategy. I found "Winning Ugly", read the reviews and bought it! Even tough I am only in the 3rd chapter I felt results already. Yesterday I played a neighbor I had played two times in the past and lost with scores of 0-6, 1-6 / 1-6, 3-6, as I learned from this book I started preparing for the game early in my way driving back home. I analyzed last two games and set an strategy. The result was me winning by score of 6-1, 7-6 (5). I felt like a million bucks after the game!!!The interesting part of it is that my game is exactly the same, so as my opponent's game, but yesterday we played my way! I was able to impose my rhythm, my pace, and my shots... And it was all thanks to "Winning Ugly". I totally recommend it to starters, or recreational players that do not see their game level reflected in the court when they have a match. It is an easy reading by the way.

This is a good instructional book, and a great introduction to competitive tennis at the club level. It concentrates on the analytical side of the game. It's also a solid review for experienced players. Author Brad Gilbert looks beyond stroke technique, and concentrates on how to dissect match play. Audio version did the book justice.

#35,986 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

After reading a couple of bad reviews I decided to judge it for myself. I am so happy that I did. The heroine was not some wishy washy bimbo, she was strong in so many ways. The things that she went through made her even stronger. Don’t believe that the hero allowed others to abuse her either ( which is what one reader stated ), you are dealing with alien races that live by a different code and she was aware of much of it. Some scenes were dark, but not in a vulgar tasteless way, just dark scenes that played into the plot of this story very well. Love how different this story was and how compelling the read was. I could not put it down and loved the HEA. Hoping that what was revealed at the end will be written into a book VERY soon. Sometimes taking a chance on a book will be rewarding and you can always skip over a part that is hard for you to handle, but overall still be a great read

Worth reading and re-reading. This book is one of the few I've read where the characters grow and change in front of the reader's eye. It's easy to force characters into situations where they have to respond and change their attitudes. Usually that's done by way of narration. The beauty of this book is that it is shown, very viscerally. Grace and Anton both grow, hugely, into real adults, bearing all the responsibility and heartache, but also all the joy, that maturity brings. That said, the first couple of chapters were tough to get through. The chapters from Grace's perspective reveal exactly how shallow she is; the chapters from Anton's perspective clue the reader in to what's about to happen to Grace, and it is not pretty. This book goes dark, very dark, but it's the darkness before the dawn. Stick with it. The book has a heart of gold as big as its half-human hero, and it is worth your time.At the end, there's a hint as to Gavin's story. I'll be finding that one (I hope it's out!) and adding it to my TBR pile.

Hey Regine. The well deserved review. I had no preconcieved notion about what this book was about except some dark, alien smut. And those parts were there, and they were dark alright, but made sense in the context. It didn’t feel like they came out of the blue to just add some nastiness. But what totally knocked me and left ME breathless was the detailed world that was painted. His culture, but also other spieces, the space stations, their whole world. The author took me there and kept me there. I cried in the end, and my heart pounded long after I had finished the book.I read it in two sittings, and cut one night’s sleep short because I couldn’t put it away. I wish I could give it ten stars.

I was on a rollercoaster of emotions with this book !!! I found this book to be a tear jerker. Grace seems to be in one abusive relationship after another. She turns to Anton Myers, a half breed with a talent for making money . And as Grace is left holding the considerable debt that her friend \manager \ former lover , she has no choice but to turn to Anton . Who is more then happy to have Grace in a position that she has to come to him. For one , she has talent , but her stage shows do not showcase her in a favorable light . Second , he fee!s as though she owes him for actions in their past that dishonored him and his family . He is going to make her pay for that slight. And he does . A lot of their scenes were hard to read , and will be burned into my grey matter for a long time . But I didn't feel that it was overly done. The characters -one of which is an Alien - have a lot to learn about each other . With the help of friends who care about them both, the way is open for confessions and healing , and better understanding. Grace and Anton want the same thing we all do . Love and acceptance . Yes , it isn't easy, but nothing worthwhile is . I am totally enthralled with REGINE ABEL , and plan to have her entire collection of super cool stories by CHRISTmas !!!!!

Don’t open the book until you have time to read it. You won’t be able to put it down. It’s been a long time since I read a book this intriguing. The writer transports you to another world with completely alien cultures. When I had to stop reading, because life happens, I didn’t really put it down. It stayed in my thoughts until I could get back to that world. It takes you on a crazy roller coaster of emotions. You will cry for them, laugh with them, fall in love with not only the main characters but also the supporting cast. You will learn to love people you initially hated and you will hate the villains of the story, REALLY hate them. There are times you will be sitting on the edge of your seat scared to death for Grace. There are scenes of graphic violence and sex, which are necessary to the story and part of the culture, so it IS an adult read. This book is exciting, it has everything from hot steamy sex to heart pounding danger. Through it all it has a beautiful love story.Grace is a woman in serious trouble. Her ex-boyfriend split town leaving her with his debt of 12 million credits. Grace has no choice but to beg Anton for help or risk being sold into slavery for the rest of her life. Anton has been dreaming of this day. Years before she had insulted his honor and his entire clan suffered the consequences. Now his revenge was with in reach, and he could regain the honor of his clansmen. She agreed to be his, body and soul for 6 months, and do whatever he told her to do. But, she doesn’t remember their first encounter, she has no idea who she just signed her life away to. She has no idea of the horrors, pain, and humiliation he has planned for her.I don’t want to give away the story, but both main characters are broken and tortured in their own ways from horrible childhoods. They come together as broken people, and their journey of self discovery, forgiveness and acceptance was a beautiful part of the story. I loved seeing them grow as people. Watching Grace learn to stand up for herself and choose what is acceptable is a lesson every woman needs to know. The story is told from both the main characters point of view, which I love. It really gives us insight into their pasts and what brought us here. The characters are very well developed. You have no trouble believing these people are real and you are drawn into their lives and into the cultures of the different aliens. What is surprising is how well developed the supporting cast is. I fell in love with William, and Romeo and Brandon is MY hero! They made the story so much better.I would love to revisit this world again. If I could give this 10 stars I would. I must now go find and read everything this talented author has written. I recommend you do the same.

Great read. I knew of Leon McCarron from his adventure "Into The Empty Quarter". What intrigued me was how the author outlined their challenges which centered on language as well as finance. I enjoyed the discussions on their gear selection. I thought using Google Earth / Maps on their mobile phone was interesting, but questioned their decision making when they decided to split up for several weeks and go it alone. It is apparent Rob is more incline to look for short cuts along the route that don't always work out and I think this lead to their eventual decision to split for a few weeks. Admirable they did this for a charity foundation.UpdateI just watched the video of this expedition and have to say the book is much better. Quite a bit that is in the book is missing in the video. This isn't a negative comment and while I understand the video had some time limitations, if you hadn't read the book you might assume they walked straight through with few rest days which isn't the case. The same goes for equipment, Rob's wife resupplied them as well as took gear such as their cold weather stuff once they reached warmer climates. Also, it is very apparent in the video that Rob's decision making on route selection caused the team some serious issues and as I said above eventually lead to them separating for about three weeks. I think Leon is the strongest of the team but he seems to have willingly taken a back seat to be the photographer and allow Rob much of the decision making which didn't always work out.

Enjoyed follow in their footsteps, & walking vicariously with them I traveled on the transSiberian Railway Express thru China, Mongolia & Siberia, a lot easier than walking. Very interesting & fun book.

Am insightful account of an amazing trek. It will draw others to follow and make their own adventures in a surprisingly hospitable land

Like another walking tale, To The Poles Without A Beard, I started thinking the trekkers were keen but a bit daft and were overlooking obviously needed items (a sleeping mat) - but became full of admiration for their dedication and accomplishments. This account of trekking through the Gobi Desert and freezing plains of Mongolia to the heartland of China and segments of Walls of various ages, then the tea plantations and terraced rice paddies, finishing in Hong Kong, is honest, thoughtful and full of wry observations. Rob and Leon were sponsored by firms and a TV documentary maker, to film the trek and send home footage for editing. They worked away with a camera and tripod, a Go-Pro bodycam and an iPhone. The lessons they learned while thinking they knew enough initially, made them all the more determined to get it right, to the extent of flying back to the start to film some more footage in the Gobi, from halfway.I love the way the lads were secure enough to refuse lifts and offers of taxis, and when obliged to travel in a police car out of a motorway tunnel they went back to the overland equivalent of where they were picked up. I did think that Dervla Murphy had it right when she chose a bicycle or a mule so as not to be carrying her entire home on her back.As to the look inside China, most of what they saw was mining and trucking, mountains and new roads, settlements and vanishing ways of life. The vanishing is often a good thing, we feel. Try raising a child in that environment. The people were generally friendly. And fascinated by foreigners.Enjoy! This is an unbiased review.

A very honest and well written narrative of an ordinary person with extraordinary ambition trying to stick to a commitment to adventure and walking across a very large country. Along the way, you are introduced to the geography and sights (to some extent) and to some extent the history of the region, as well as the challenges of doing something like this. For me what I appreciated most was the honesty involving the experience…the exhaustion, boredom, pain, and challenges involved in adventures such as these. But at the same time, it is vivid and beautifully written so you feel like you are along for the ride. It also fanned the existing sparks of doing a walk like this (which I have long wanted to do) across some place (not sure where). Greatly enjoyed the read! Very immersive book.

Then this is the book for you!Rob Lilwall's writing and story flows very well, and this book is very suitable to middle grade/teen readers as well as adults. In fact, I can see this book being an excellent accompaniment for geography and/or history curriculum. The landscape of Mongolia and China are very well described, as are the people. Lilwall's sense of humor and reflective tone keep the narrative personable and well-paced.Whenever I watch National Geographic I wonder what it's really like for those adventurous folk who are filming and roughing it with their heavy packs, and lack of access to fresh food and water. "Walking Home from Mongolia" is a great way to join two explorers, Rob and Leon, as they walk from Mongolia to Hong Kong to raise funds for a charity, Viva, and discover more about mainland China. Lilwall's insights about going on a long journey, and how that parallels with normal "boring" life are great. He shares the wonders of the trip, but also the hardships - like interpersonal conflict with Leon and the negative consequences of certain choices.I can't wait to watch the National Geographic show that was developed from this trek!If you want to see what it's like to leave your normal life behind for a big cause (Viva helps at-risk children, [...]) , and walk through Mongolia and China for six months of surviving crazy cold weather, speaking Mandarin, enjoying unexpected hospitality, and swimming in frozen rivers, to mention just a few wild moments, then this is the read for you.
