This book is a GREAT way to get introduced to buying, selling, finding, understanding, and making money using dividend stocks. If you've heard a lot of stock market vocabulary being thrown around and you've always wanted to know what everyone was talking about and get in on it yourself, this book is the best way to get started. I also had a few questions for the author, John Roberts, and e-mailed him directly through his website. He took the time to respond to every part of my e-mail just as clearly as the writing in his book and answered all of my questions promptly. I'll be looking for more books by this guy.

I am so glad that I purchased this book. I learned so much about dividend stocks, EFTs, and sites to go to for various intel. After reading, I took the challenge and purschased my first two dividend stocks with F (Ford) and SYY (Sysco Corporation) without using a broker. Since then, I have purchased 2 more dividend stocks. Thank you, John Roberts! Excellent book!

You can start getting checks in your mailbox in 30 to 90 days with John’s winning dividend investment strategy. Written in his easy to understand, conversational style, John shows you why companies will continually pay you these dividend checks over and over. Hint: They are really motivated to keep paying you, and even keep increasing the size of the checks. So if you want to get serious about your retirement, or just start getting extra money, this book, Your Future Paychecks And Raises, shows you just how to do that – starting now.

Second book I have purchased from this author. There are NO BETTER BOOKS, in my opinion, for newbies like me! So easy to understand, and love his writing style!

I've read many books over the years and this book i enjoyed. I plan to send a copy to my grand daughter just to give her something additional to think about. I have already started her investing and she is getting small returns. John Roberts explains a lot of key information in an understandable way. The granddaughter is 22.

Excellent non-fiction read. John takes a complex investing topic and translates it into English for everyone to understand. The investing process is not intended to replace your paychecks overnight but it is a proven process to start slowly and safely build over the years. The book explains the invest in dividend stocks process step by step. It presents excellent arguments why this is one of the best investments techniques availible. It is low risk, easy once you learn the techniques and good returns. If I were in my 20’s it would be a major art of my investing strategy. Even in retirement, it should a significant portion of your portfolio.

Excellent book for a beginner. The book covered everything I neededto get started with purchasing dividend stocks and has a wealth of resources that is very helpful. I highly recommend.

This a great book if you want to learn more about long term investing in the stock market. This book will not talk day trading or swing trading. If you want a better understanding of stocks I would recommend this book. The only reasons why I give this book fours stars is because some concepts were difficult to understand.

#6,553 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

For me, the most interesting books involve strong, well-developed characters. Ender’s Game is a 5 Star book because of Ender Wiggin; a complex and compelling boy whom the reader can’t help but empathize with and cheer for throughout the read.Does this book really need another review? Probably not. Clearly, Ender’s Game is the mark of an excellent sci-fi read, so a lot of people probably agree with my assessment of Card’s work. But let me just say, any book that has aliens (check), really really ridiculously smart children (check), a fast-paced and interesting plot line (check), action and battle and war! (check), and beautiful writing (check), should be read.

I got this book when I saw a trailer for the movie. I was so intrigued by the trailer, I felt I needed to read the book. And I am so glad I did. There was so much they had to cut from the book to make the movie. Plus, getting to be in Ender’s head was pretty cool.Basic premise of the book: future dystopian world undergoing population control. The world has been attacked by aliens and humans were so scared, they decided to track down and wipe the aliens out. But they realized adult reflexes were too slow and their decisions weren’t ruthless enough. So they created a battle school to find the smartest, most ruthless and most strategic of kids, and so they found Ender. To train him, they used games simulating battles they were actually having in space and they were amazed at the choices he made. Through video games, they were able to make Ender into a perfect military leader.I won’t tell any more than that because I don’t want to spoil the book. But if you find yourself thinking “why is this kid so freaking important to these battle school leaders”, at least you will understand going in. Definitely read it. I’ve read it twice now and it still amazes me.

I am unhappy with this product. I ordered this hardcover, thinking it was a novel. This isn't a novel, it is a graphic novel. Nowhere in the listing on Amazon does it indicate that.

When I was in ninth grade, we were taken to the library and told to choose a book so we'd have something to read between standardized tests. Instead of picking a book, I started screwing around in the library. Generally getting into trouble. Typical teen stuff. The librarian eventually nabbed me, and asked what sort of books I liked reading. For some reason that I still can't explain to this day, I thought that all the "cool" kids read science fiction. So that's what I said."Then you should read this book," she told me, handing me a fairly worn copy of 'Ender's Game,' and telling me that she loved it enough to re-read it every year.I wasn't thrilled with it, to be honest. The cover seemed kind of hokey. It smelled funny (hey, I was a kid). I had no idea what a "Hugo" or "Nebula" award might be. But the bell was ringing, testing would begin shortly, and I was kind of stuck for options. I checked out the book, and went on my way.I've always been a fast test taker, and so about an hour into a three-hour test I was done and bored. I opened the book and started reading. And a two hours later I was done.Up to that point, I'd read tons of books—mostly of the "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" and "Encyclopedia Brown" variety. This was the first "grownup" fiction I'd ever read. And I was hooked. I went on to read everything I could find by Orson Scott Card. I wrote tons of short stories as creative writing assignments, all featuring Battle School or Ender himself. And I took what was a sorta-hobby of writing short stories and "books" (very short books, I assure you) and ended up turning it into a lifelong pursuit. And, like the librarian, I've taken to re-reading this book every year. I've given away more copies of this single book than I can count. And I've owned every English-language version of it ever released. It's a benchmark, life-shaping book for me.'Ender's Game' was the book that taught me that books could be what you do for a living. And for that, I'm incredibly grateful. My only regret is that I can't give it more than five stars.

One of my favorite books. I have read this several times over the last 15 years and enjoy it each time. It is a sci-fi story that very much reads like a "Harry Potter" coming of age story so I am sure Potter heads will love it too. There is a twist at the end I NEVER saw coming when I first read it in High School. I even named my cat Ender Wiggins to honor my favorite book character.Yes, there is a movie, and if you never read the book you will enjoy it but to be honest I enjoyed the movie more having read the book. That is rare, but it gave great visuals for what was hard to imagine in the book.Note: If you read and enjoy this book, check out Ender's Shadow. It is a parallel novel about the character Bean and is every bit of exciting.

This is an interesting book. Of course it is completely fictional and highly improbable, but the excellent writing allows you to get into the story and to feel a part of the action. There is a lot of political exaggeration from the supporting characters, but the main guy seems to be believable and make rational decisions. My biggest hangup with the character is that he functions well beyond his age. He is a child genius, so his thought processes and ability to meet certain challenges are acceptable, but, smart or not, maturity comes with age and experience, so his interactions with his superiors are not very likely.Still, an interesting concept with good writing. I recommend this book. And then I recommend you stop. I read the next few books in this series and, instead of good books with good stories, I found the main character to be increasingly self-righteous, over developed, condescending, and boring. I got the distinct impression that the author was taking a swipe at certain religious elements by giving the impression that Ender is something of a [self-centered] Messiah or Savior. This book: worthwhile and entertaining. The next ones: progressively disappointing and increasingly annoying.

#42,391 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Karl Marx, the self-proclaimed revolutionary socialist, almost never wrote about socialism. Instead, virtually everything he wrote and theorized about concerned the society of modern capitalism and how it worked on various levels: economic, political, social, cultural and ideological. There may be no better example of this basic reality about Marx's Marxism than this little book, originally published as a series of newspaper articles about the circumstances behind the French coup d'etat of December 1851 that overthrow a democratic republic and ushered in a the authoritarian regime of Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (nephew of his more famous name-sake).This book should be read for its literary qualities along. The wit, style and humor is unmatched. It also serves as a primer on several key Marxian conceptions including social psychology and political ideology in its treatment of how ideology and political illusions function as self-deceptions hiding underlying motivations decades before Freud developed the concepts of the unconscious and repressed meaning; how and why under certain circumstances the ruling classes of modern capitalism opt for authoritarianism over democracy; the complex interplay of individual temperament and broad historical realities that lead most people to think that their opinions, prejudices and politics are unique expressions of themselves outside and independent from the social context in which they were formed; and the problems of a relatively late-developing and uneven form of capitalism that help explain why the 19th century French bourgeoisie had such difficulty consolidating its position as ruling class compared with its British and later, American, counter-parts. Thus the repeated revolutionary upheavals and political crises expressing their retarded hegemony that are not fully exhausted until the failed military uprising by right-wing elements of the French army in 1958! Or perhaps the left-wing Student Revolution of 1968?"The Eighteenth Brumaire" is the definitive reply to the legions of anti-Marxists of political creeds from the neo-cons to the post-modernists who sincerely and desperately wish to believe that Marx is today irrelevant; that he is one-dimensional or reductionist in his understanding of social complexity; that his ideas were "utopian nonsense to which an end must be put" (Marx on the propertied classes' treatment of agitation for social reform leading up to the 1851 coup). I use this text often in classes I teach on modern European history, and am invariably bemused by how it reduces to dumb-founded silence all such allegations by those who have never read a line of Marx, often followed by befuddled efforts to nit-pick this or that aspect of Marx's analysis, and the broader theory of modern capitalist society it expresses, worthy of the most pusillanimous Scholasticism of the later Middle Ages or the most precious post-structuralist textual exegesis. Unfortunately for them the end of history proclaimed a generation ago is still a long way off.

… at least the metaphorical one, I figured it was long past time to read one of the works of the most influential writers of the last couple of centuries. During all those years of turmoil, before terrorism became threat #1, there was the fight against “the Communists,” which encompassed my life, with varying degrees of willingness and enthusiasm. I recently re-read Edmund Wilson’s excellent To the Finland Station: A Study in the Writing and Acting of History. Of the various works of Karl Marx, Wilson suggested that this one would pass muster as the most readable and lively polemic. This work was first published in 1852, within a year of the coup d’état of December 02, 1851, orchestrated by Louis Bonaparte, which would end the Second Republic, and usher in the Second Empire, of which he would be the “emperor,” for almost two decades. It has been a tumultuous three years since the revolutions of 1848 had swept over Europe. Fictionally, this period in French history is depicted so well in Gustave Flaubert’s L'Éducation Sentimentale (French Edition). Marx’s title is derived from the actions of Louis Napoleon’s uncle, the “original” Napoleon, who ended the period of the French revolution on the 18th of Brumaire, Year VIII (of the French revolutionary calendar, which corresponds with November 09, 1799). Effectively, Louis Napoleon did the same, in terms of the Second Republic, of which he was President, ending it on December 02, 1851. Marx commences his work with a famous aphorism that I have heard numerous times, but never with attribution: “Hegel says somewhere that that great historical facts and personages recur twice. He forgot to add: ‘Once as tragedy, and again as farce’. Caussidiere for Danton… the Nephew for the Uncle. The identical caricature marks also the conditions under which the second edition of the eighteenth Brumaire is issued.”Polemic, political analysis of the conflicts among the economic and social classes, and newscast. Marx’s work is all of that, and more. The “newscast” portions make it a bit difficult for the modern reader. Various (now obscure) French politicians are mentioned, with the assumption the reader will know who they are, and what role they played. Marx weaves back and forth across time, often in a disjointed way. He does recap the events of those three years towards the end of his work. Essentially, the proletariat led the revolution of 1848. All parties united against them, and they were shelved. Exclusive power of the bourgeois republic lasted only from June 24 to Dec. 10, 1848, when Louis Bonaparte was elected President, ending the dictatorship of Caviagnac. And for the next three years he would plot the Republic’s destruction, playing off the “Orleanists” and the “Legitimists”, against each other and the bourgeois. Bonaparte creates the “Society of December 10”, who are “…rag pickers, scissors grinders, tinkers, beggars – in short, that whole undefined, dissolute, kicked-about mass…” He is “Chief of the Slum-Proletariat” and would use it to: “…forestalled or dispersed counter-demonstrations.” A forerunner of the “brown shirts.”It would be the small farmers who would provide the backbone of Napoleon’s support. Marx analyzes their isolation and self-sufficiency, a “class” of common interests. Ultimately it would not be a story that would end well, as the rule of the aristocracy of finance would be reasserted. With a Marxian flair: “the mortgage indebtedness that burdens the soil of France imposes upon the French farmer class… slavery of capital… has transformed the mass of the French nation into troglodytes…the newly instituted allotment… has become a vampire that sucks out its heart-blood and its very brain, and throws it into the alchemist’s pot of capital.” And the aristocracy of finance love him since: “The President is now recognized as the guardian of order on every Stock Exchange of Europe.”Ancient history? Not exactly… for as Jean-Baptiste Karr fittingly first put it, ironically in this same period, 1849: “Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.” It was Adolphe Thiers who contemptuously thought that Napoleon is a cretin “whom we will lead by the nose.” Hum! Or, ripped from a fairly recent headline: “Never have lackeys been chased from service with less ceremony than Bonaparte did his ministers.” Hum, redux. The “blind submission to the will of the counter-revolution, which revealed itself as law.” And if the system is placed under just a bit of stress, say, the next “terrorist attack,” voila: “The industrial bourgeois cheer the destruction of their own parliament,” as always, only a “temporary” measure to get us through the crisis.Sometimes it is difficult to end on an up-note, so why bother? For as Marx said: “The traditions of all the dead generations burden, like a nightmare, the minds of the living.” Overall, 4-stars.

Marx gets five stars; the edition no stars. I have the Bi Classics Pocket Edition (with the Daumier drawing on its cover)--a "first" edition from 2017. The publisher should change its name to "Bipolar Classics." It's a weird product, desultorily produced. The biggest problem? The pamphlet consists of seven sections but Bipolar has printed only six, omitting the final section, which can be found, for example, in Robert C. Tucker's Marx-Engels Reader. Another problem is that while footnotes are added to the first section, none follow the subsequent sections, as if the publisher had a sudden change of mind--hence my charge of bipolarism.

The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte is a great introduction to Marx. One of Marx’s great contribution to thought is the materialistic conception of history, a theory of history that postulates that all events in history are due to productive power and economic activities. In Marx’s retelling of the history of the coup of December 2, 1851, the various figures acted in the way they did because of their class and economic interests. This book gives a taste of Marx’s materialistic analysis of history.I am very satisfied with the product quality of this book and would recommend this edition of the book quality-wise.

very intriguing book about the germ warfare lab situated in very close proximity to both the Atlantic Flyway used by migratory birds and also to the Hamptons, where America's elite hang out. The author's research and interviews with former lab personnel ads much credibility to the book. It is NO coincidence that Lyme and other rickettsial (tick borne) diseases escaped from this lab and spread up and down the East Coast. As normal, our government strongly denies any responsibility for the outbreak even though prominent scientists from the lab imported specific species of hard ticks from places like Texas and Africa because of the ease these critters can spread deadly disease. I am not writing this from my secret underground bunker and I do not have on my tinfoil hat.

For a book about biology and history, Lab 257 reads more like modern horror, or maybe even a thriller. I became interested in the subject after seeing an episode of Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Theory about Plum Island. While I took it most of it with a grain of salt (as one is wont to do with conspiracy theories, especially regarding "mutants" washing up on a nearby beach), it did make me quite curious about what was going on out there.Granted, most of Lab 257 falls far from revealing autopsies of little green men, mutated humans, or any New World Order plots, the content is significantly disturbing. Yes, the author makes the case that Lyme Disease was spread originally from Plum Island, and that the island's research facility was designed by a Nazi scientist, but that's not what scared me the most. The waste and mismanagement of the island is appaling, regardless of your own political views. For a facility that houses such dangerous pathogens as Rift Valley fever and foot and mouth disease, it was downright shocking to read just how pathetically the management handled dangerous situations. Even during Plum Island's "golden years," until its privitization, I couldn't believe the problems that were occurring there (holes in the roof, wide open ventilation ducts, peeling paint, etc). One chapter after privitization is entitled "Decline," and I honestly didn't know how it could get worse, but it did: raw, disease infested sewage flooding a lab during a power outage (the workers who prevented a biological meltdown were promptly fired after that incident), nine-to-five unarmed security watching over the facility, employees driving boxes of viruses around in vans, and leaving them at the ferry dock like any parcel. But honestly, the icing was how replacement workers hired by the company running Plum Island ended up stealing a van and other equipment from the facility, while filling in for striking workers. It made me realize that my local McDonalds is run better than Plum Island; at least they'd shut down the Golden Arches if they made this many mistakes. This would all be amusing if it were a Cohen brothers' movie, but the fact is that Plum Island is now a part of the Department of Homeland Security, located close to some of the most populated areas of the United States. And if Lyme Disease is the only thing that's gotten out of there, then we are truely lucky. After reading this, you'll realize why. There is a degree of contraversy over the author's sources, or whether his claims are true. But even if you take away the most fantastic, there is enough juicy information in here to ruin your sleep.Plus, it's well written. As I noted in the beginning, the book is nothing like the dry academic document that I was expecting.

A MUST READ! To understand where LYME DISEASE Actually got started in this country... a good easily readable documentary on Lyme Disease & Plum Island's shady post-WWII Nazi scientists the US engaged in having them defect & come 'work' for us--creating virulent and debilitating, as well as sometimes fatal--Bio Warfare weapons like Lyme Disease & other infectious illnesses from various viruses, etc., some intentionally dispersed throughout certain parts of our country periodically as 'experiments' on our own population. they started it, yet have never offered treatment for cures... and millions suffer with ongoing, often long term Chronic Illnesses that never cease, but gradually break down their health and ability to function at any near-normal level in most cases. The end game in these infections is to weaken immune systems therefore creating the inability to fight off and over come many opportunistic organisms. It's a travesty that absolutely needs to be addressed in our country, by our own govt. Perhaps they are too fearful that if the gen. population had a clue of the origin of some of these infections, that it would come back to bite them big time? Like opening up a can of (sickly) worms...

This was a gift to Harlon Hain... (Recently departed SR-71 Pilot) who said it had a lot of accurate information and was a joy to re-visit the Blackbird.

Well documented manual on my favorite plane of all time.

Adding a copilot seat to the A-12 made good sense. This book concisely described both the short innovative design phase and the long service record if this unique jet spy plane.

Knowledge is power.

Beautiful book especially for anyone who is familiar with the HABU

Haynes was known for providing manuals with detail information on how to repair vehicles and so the title "Owners' Workshop Manual" would give you an expectation of greater detail on the nuts and bolts of this aircraft. But it ended up being more about the history and running dialogue of some of it's flights. It would give you hints about some of the ongoing problems of the aircraft over time but give you little of what it took to solve those problems. I'm a technical type of guy and want to know more about how the parts and pieces go together on these complex wonderful machines. So I'm a little disappointed that it didn't really do that. It also missed the opportunity in giving really detailed photographs of the aircraft especially given that there is an excellent example of a fully restored SR71 at the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville, Oregon. A great opportunity lost here.

Obscure book on a legendary airplane. Good price and fast shipping.

Excellent book the story of the famed SR-71 is a great read for all those HABU fanatics.

Becker's message for his readers is to set aside their fears, relax, and do it. As unimpressive as that advice may sound, it is laid out in very modest, clear, practical terms and, like all good analyses, it is hard to implement because it goes to the heart of the matter and questions the assumptions that guide people's writing practices, mostly without them realizing it. It helps that Becker has been grappling with similar problems for 30+ years as a writer, teacher, and editor. I will try to give a bullet list of what I took away from the book. That fails to do justice to the book, predominantly for two reasons: Firstly, the proof is in the pudding. If Becker is critical of citation practices, his own relatively short bibliography is rich and thought-provoking. Secondly, he has a knack for situating the problem in its context. Along the way, he appears to sociological gems of analysis like the dichotomy between head and hand, "the corruption of indicators," "pluralistic ignorance," etc. Some of the conclusions are a little too quick, but, overall, this is quality sociology applied to a common problem. Some of the practical advice:- What if I cannot organize the chaos of my thoughts in the form of an attractive product that I can then "export" to my readership? This concern rests on a misleading dualism between thinking and writing, where writing is understood as the product of thinking rather than a process of thinking in its own right. Students tend to believe that, unlike them, adept writers simply sit at their desks and transcribe their perfectly orchestrated thoughts into well-structured compositions in one go. The dualism also blinds us to the complexity of the writing process and the different demands of, say, a first vs. final draft.- Like accents, people's writing style gives away the kind of person they want to be. Classy locutions mostly have a ceremonial, rather than a semantic, purpose and, by dropping them, your writing gains clarity and loses pretense. "To overcome the academic prose, you have to overcome the academic pose." Writing style can also signal allegiance to a theory or school.- Experiment with ritualistic behavior when writing. While it may be interpreted as neurotic and obsessive, crazy habits that you stick to can help relieve stress, especially in a process such as writing where you do not, however much you wish, exert total control over the product.- Write first drafts "quickly and carelessly" precisely because you know you will be returning to revise it multiple times later.- Collect pre-fabricated parts of text for use in the future if it sounds intuitively promising and remotely related to your research interests.- Be frugal with your bibliography and citations. A bibliography was originally supposed to be about specific further information that the reader might find useful if your research interested them. For instance, a book that contains information in a generally similar area is not a good candidate for inclusion in your bibliography.- Choose your metaphors judiciously. Trite and tired metaphors such as "a body of literature" do not mean much unless you are willing to say what the heart, brain, and other organs of that body map to in your metaphor. Otherwise, it is superficial, lacks seriousness, and is best left out. Metaphor, in this sense, is "a serious theoretical exercise," not a literary device to make your prose sound more flowery. This advice, obviously, does not apply to metaphors that are permanently built into our language.- "Evasive beginning"s that are so common in scholarly writings are misleading and risk confusing the reader, if not the author. Rather than being suspenseful and Conan Doyle-ish, tell your reader where you are headed in the beginning. This does not mean that evasive, vacuous, almost meaningless sentences cannot be used in early drafts. On the contrary, committing to words can help you crystalize your thoughts in an iterative process. But such sentences have to be flagged and revised before you get your writing out the door. Some of the insights (greatly expanded on in the book):- Verbosity and "bulls*** qualifications" that shun explicit specification arise because writers want to avoid attributing causality or agency. Unnecessary words occur because writers want to hedge and avoid big claims or sound profound.- Abstract words sometimes mean nothing in themselves, but "mark a place that needs a real idea." General words such as "relationship" or "complex" are good cases in point.- The stories you can/choose to tell are more important than the theories you use to explain them.- Rules are never as clear and unambiguous to have only one interpretation. This means there are no absolute rules for editing and the process is largely done "by ear."- An outline might help in the early stages, but only if there is a dynamic interaction between it and the text. Writing frequently sends the author back to the drawing board.

I bought the first edition of this book about 20 years ago and found it very helpful. I long ago misplaced my copy and so was happy to order the new second edition. On reading the book again, I found Becker's advice to be as good as I remembered, but I was disappointed that he had made so few changes in the "second edition." Essentially, the first edition has been reprinted verbatim--even typos weren't corrected--with a relatively few pages of additional material added to the last two chapters. Chapter 9 now contains Becker's general thoughts on recent software that he considers useful to writers. This discussion would have been more helpful if he had been willing to mention specific programs. I guess he decided not to either to avoid giving free advertising or to avoid dating the discussion. The last chapter gives some interesting, if brief, observations on the place of writing in modern academic life.In short, if you already have the first edition, there's not much point in buying the second edition. If, on the other hand, you haven't encountered this book before and you would like some useful tips on academic writing, it's well worth the price.

Reading this for one of my classes. Wish I had read it in the first semester of my doc program. Would have saved me some stress and many hours of writer's block. Academic writing can be very intimidating. Becker does a great job making us see that we're not alone in our insecurity & quirks about writing. This book and its themes are timeless.

Here Becker offers a series of essays about various aspects of the academic writing process, and the life of the academic while all of this is going on. Part writing and life skills advice, part cautionary tale in how the whole process might get off track, part encouragement for the newer writer, this is an interesting supplement to one's writing project--and perhaps an interesting piece to read while one is going through a phase of classic avoidance behavior (we all do it).

My son-in-law is writing his undergraduate thesis (his school actually requires a thesis to graduate with a B.A.). I was attracted to the title based on his and my daughter's strong interest in sociology (her major) and their relentless research into why people do the things they do. He was thrilled with the book and feels like it will help him.

I love this book!
