Good book to read. Teaches people not to spend there money on things or products just because it makes us happy. In the end we are left with nothing but debt and feeling depressed and wanting more. This book teaches you methods on how not to become a shopaholic and de-clutter your life and make good use of what you have already.

Great book

Bottom line is to obtain things that will last and take care of them. For the most part, this has been our philosophy over the years but has anyone tried to get a flat-screen television repaired lately? Most modern-day appliances with electronic controls are pretty much "throwaways" which is horrible for the landfills. The author has suggestions on what and where to buy most anything although I ended up skimming some of the more detailed parts of the book.This is a nice addition for those more serious about simplifying their lives.Thanks to NetGalley for the advance digital reading copy.

Honestly, this book puts Marie Kondo to the curb! I can’t believe there aren’t more reviews. This is one of those books that I highlighted and dog eared pages so I could easily go back and find the key points that resonated with me. It really makes you think about what you’re buying. Stop shopping to fill a void and make a concerted effort to only buy items you need and use and make sure they’re quality items to last a lifetime. It makes your soul feel good. Think of your grandparents, who probably still use kitchen utensils or pots that they have had for decades! They didn’t buy a new couch every five years bc they wanted to keep up with trends or color schemes. They bought something and used it until it didn’t function anymore. It’s so simple. And it makes you feel good every time you use an item that is well made and cost you a little more. I get happy to pull out my CorningWare dish when cooking because it’s special, unlike the cheap set of dishes I had previously only bc they were on sale. I loved everything about this book EXCEPT THE LAST CHAPTER!! After such a great book with a central focus of buying quality items made to last, the author throws in a rant about global warming. Really?! Keep your “opinions” to yourself regarding political issues. That final point really devalued the book for me as a whole. Either leave that out completely or change the title and incorporate it throughout. I felt like someone I trusted just snuck up behind me and hit me in the head unexpectedly. Therefore, 4 stars.

A good read. There are plenty of condescending voices in the minimalism and eco-friendly book and blog worlds, Tara isn't one of this. This book feel feels more like a conversation with a friend and made me laugh aloud at several points. It's a holistic, well-researched and practical overview of mindful buying. I particularly enjoyed learning about the marketing techniques! (I nearly deducted a star for the frequent BuyMeOnce website plugs, but I support the vision if not the sponsored link execution.)

I've presented using Prezi before, but I never really got the hang of using it effectively. I moved back to PowerPoint. The first chapter of this smart and timely book points out what I didn't catch the first time: even though I tried to use the Prezi tools, I still was thinking in a linear way about planning my presentations. Before even introducing the software, the authors dedicate a full chapter to thinking in a non-linear way. This initially surprised me, but as I read through it, their suggestions, comments, and advice started to click. Everything else in the book flows from that initial idea: to do Prezi well, you have to think non-linearly from the very beginning of content development, not as an afterthought or as a way of making it look cool. That realization alone is powerful.Chapters 2 and 3 give the basics and then a deep dive into the design features of a Prezi--I didn't know I could use CSS in this program, but now I know that and more. Dozens of helpful step-by-step tutorials with multiple images abound, whether that's for learning how to insert a line, create a path, or import slides from PowerPoint (Chapter 4). Common frustrations such as import failures, content loss, and uneven sound levels are addressed, which helps immensely. One of the biggest bonuses is the tutorials on how to use technologies outside Prezi (Inkscape, Audacity, YouTube) in conjunction with Prezi. The chapters on mobile/tablet use, remote presenting and collaboration are also thoughtful.Each chapter is impressively documented with images and text; I will return to the chapters in the future to brush up on my techniques. I have always used Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations and I'm a newcomer to Prezi (in fact I plan to be using both, depending on the occasion). I was therefore looking for a book that can both introduce me to a new concept/way of thinking about presentations but also give me enough knowledge to create a presentation good enough for a demanding audience. Mastering Prezi for Business Presentations is a great book as it did achieve both.Things I liked:•Good for newcomers it's a "master" series but also great for beginners•Well structured and edited•Information is presented in a methodical (there's "steps" guiding throughout) way so for people with already some expertise they can use it for reference (no need to read from cover to cover).•Good balance of pictures/screenshots with content•Starts with overview and some general guidance (for beginners) and then jumps into the nitty gritty stuff•It presents additional information about a topic for those non-experts. For example when talking about Prezi and images, it also gives an overview of raster vs. vector, popular editors, description of file formats and advantages/disadvantages of each in relation to Prezi as well - for example how to find images, vectorize and insert.•Also found very useful the "summary tables" which help the reader decide on a technology or file format, feature etc.I haven't found anything negative although I must admit I haven't read it from cover to cover. I have yet to try the Prezi API, there's always the possibility of errors lurking in the JavaScript code.. ;-)Overall a well-written book, recommended for both beginners and intermediate readers. I cannot say I am necessarily a master of Prezi yet but I certainly feel confident I can do quite a lot with it.

The book is great in suggesting what is really new in Prezi - the '3D' approach which allows to escape from the linearity of PPT and offers your audience an idea of the complexity you are talking about. This really 'hands-on' guide helps you in clarifying how to transform a presentation in a storytelling experience. I have found dozens of good tips to communicate clearly, consistently and effectively with Prezi. Not to forget, many good ideas to avoid motion sickness...I'd recommend this book to all those who don't just want to 'jazz up' their slides, but are looking for a way to get the most out of Prezi. Why not 5 stars? There is so much enthusiasm in the author's words, perhaps too much for down-to-earth people.

This three time Olympic gold medalist in the sport, writes all the skills you need to become as great as a player as he is. Karch goes into details about his training routine, on and off the volleyball court. This book can be broken down into 4 segments: the game, the skills, the training and teh play. It is approximately 167 pages of great reading along with photos of himself and other top players in the game.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is an aspiring volleyball player. As Karch says, "go for the gold!" Happy reading! I hope this review will help you consider this book to purchase as I have my copy from Amazon.com already! ;O

Good book, but its only purpose is to appeal to "the masses." Most volleyball books are designed to help everyone; whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Let's face it, if you're trying to make a lot of money off a book...that's the best way to go. However, if you're already a good player, you're not going to benefit much from this book. You're much better off buying Mark Tanner's Smarter Volleyball. It actually talks about the "mental game," rather than the traditional pass, set, hit scenario that you see in most of these books. I've been Karch's biggest fan for most of my life, but to be honest...this book is a waste of time if you're actually wanting to get to a higher level of play. If you're just starting out, buy the book...but if you're looking for more indepth strategies, go with Mark Tanner's book or one of the "lesser known" authors...they're probably not in it for the "big" money.

The Grand-daddy of beach volleyball gives excellent pointers on training, strategy, and skills in this book. He also sheds some light on the state of the AVP pro beach volleyball tour. For the latest on the AVP and inside, behind-the-scene stories, I'd also recommend "Order On The Court" by Tom Burke (2008) as a must-read!

This book is great for the beginner. It does not go in depth into strategy, reading hitters, positioning, etc... It does give GREAT tips on imporving your overall game, endurance, shot placement, et al. There is a bit of humor mixed into the fray, which adds the human touch.When I bought this book i was a beginner. My serves were poor, sets average, kills average, blocks average, and passes were mediocre. After just a few weeks i had a great jump serve, monster kills, and incredible blocks. I love it.If you are a beginner and want to improve quickly - this is for you. If you have been around a bit - you might find something useful in here but you probably already know this stuff. In depth strategy is lacking.

This book has great photos and a balanced overall approach to beach volleyball. It's got all the basics covered and the stories that are peppered throughout the book make for interesting reading. I would probably have liked to hear more about the players and matches of the past, but I think Karch wanted this to be an instructional book rather than one for entertainment. Still I would have preferred more opinions and insights into the players and strategies. I hope that Karch does a second edition with the new AVP and it's rules.

With his second book The Audacity of Hope, Obama engages themes raised in his keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, shares personal views on faith and values and offers a vision of the future that involves repairing a "political process that is broken" and restoring a government that has fallen out of touch with the people. We had the opportunity to ask Senator Obama a few questions about writing, reading, and politics--see his responses below. --Daphne Durham 20 Second Interview: A Few Words with Barack Obama Q: How did writing a book that you knew would be read so closely by so many compare to writing your first book, when few people knew who you were? A: In many ways, Dreams from My Father was harder to write. At that point, I wasn't even sure that I could write a book. And writing the first book really was a process of self-discovery, since it touched on my family and my childhood in a much more intimate way. On the other hand, writing The Audacity of Hope paralleled the work that I do every day--trying to give shape to all the issues that we face as a country, and providing my own personal stamp on them. Q: What is your writing process like? You have such a busy schedule, how did you find time to write? A: I'm a night owl, so I usually wrote at night after my Senate day was over, and after my family was asleep--from 9:30 p.m. or so until 1 a.m. I would work off an outline--certain themes or stories that I wanted to tell--and get them down in longhand on a yellow pad. Then I'd edit while typing in what I'd written. Q: If readers are to come away from The Audacity of Hope with one action item (a New Year's Resolution for 2007, perhaps?), what should it be? A: Get involved in an issue that you're passionate about. It almost doesnÂ’t matter what it is--improving the school system, developing strategies to wean ourselves off foreign oil, expanding health care for kids. We give too much of our power away, to the professional politicians, to the lobbyists, to cynicism. And our democracy suffers as a result. Q: You're known for being able to work with people across ideological lines. Is that possible in today's polarized Washington? A: It is possible. There are a lot of well-meaning people in both political parties. Unfortunately, the political culture tends to emphasize conflict, the media emphasizes conflict, and the structure of our campaigns rewards the negative. I write about these obstacles in chapter 4 of my book, "Politics." When you focus on solving problems instead of scoring political points, and emphasize common sense over ideology, you'd be surprised what can be accomplished. It also helps if you're willing to give other people credit--something politicians have a hard time doing sometimes. Q: How do you make people passionate about moderate and complex ideas? A: I think the country recognizes that the challenges we face aren't amenable to sound-bite solutions. People are looking for serious solutions to complex problems. I don't think we need more moderation per se--I think we should be bolder in promoting universal health care, or dealing with global warming. We just need to understand that actually solving these problems won't be easy, and that whatever solutions we come up with will require consensus among groups with divergent interests. That means everybody has to listen, and everybody has to give a little. That's not easy to do. Q: What has surprised you most about the way Washington works? A: How little serious debate and deliberation takes place on the floor of the House or the Senate. Q: You talk about how we have a personal responsibility to educate our children. What small thing can the average parent (or person) do to help improve the educational system in America? What small thing can make a big impact? A: Nothing has a bigger impact than reading to children early in life. Obviously we all have a personal obligation to turn off the TV and read to our own children; but beyond that, participating in a literacy program, working with parents who themselves may have difficulty reading, helping their children with their literacy skills, can make a huge difference in a child's life. Q: Do you ever find time to read? What kinds of books do you try to make time for? What is on your nightstand now? A: Unfortunately, I had very little time to read while I was writing. I'm trying to make up for lost time now. My tastes are pretty eclectic. I just finished Marilynne RobinsonÂ’s Gilead, a wonderful book. The language just shimmers. I've started Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, which is a great study of Lincoln as a political strategist. I read just about anything by Toni Morrison, E.L. Doctorow, or Philip Roth. And I've got a soft spot for John le Carre. Q: What inspires you? How do you stay motivated? A: I'm inspired by the people I meet in my travels--hearing their stories, seeing the hardships they overcome, their fundamental optimism and decency. I'm inspired by the love people have for their children. And I'm inspired by my own children, how full they make my heart. They make me want to work to make the world a little bit better. And they make me want to be a better man.

Love reading this book. What a great and brilliant man. Written before he was President with a lot of eye opening insight into politics. Not a "story". This is real life.

Loved the insight he gave on his first term as a Senator and his thoughts on politics. You can learn a lot from this book.

Obama takes you through his early years to is early days as a Junior Illinois Senator. I was surprised to learn of Obama’s more moderate views on capitalism and defense. I also appreciated his honesty about his loss on his first campaign and challenges he faced being a husband and father. This book gives you a glimpse of what Obama felt was important and ultimately lead to his Presidential agenda.

Barack Obama our first African American President of the United States tells his story of his life before becoming our President by telling about his family, true values, common goals and differences, and compromises. A must read.

The book is an interesting take on American politics, full of Obamas ideas for solving America's problems. But like others have said, it's clear from reading this book that he was already thinking of running for president when he wrote it. The book really gives you a deeper understanding of Obamas mindset in both politics and life I'm generaI. I would say if you want to get to know him on a more personal level, this book is for you. Oh and he also gives you a bit of insight into the inner workings of congress. A worthy read.

One of the few books that’s made a lasting impact on my personal and professional life. A must read for any young person wanting to serve his/her nation with wit, goodwill and the leadership our generation deserves. I️ am grateful to the author!
