I’ve been a casual chess player since I learned the rules sometime around 3rd grade. At the behest of some friends who are also into the game, I recently decided to try and up my skills. I grabbed this book, and I feel like I wasted $3. If you know the rules of chess, you’re already beyond what the book teaches. The book is falsely marketed as something more than what it is. I will say that the manner of presentation is really nice—very straightforward and simple to understand with great illustrations. That was enough to make me get the second in the series in hopes of more advanced content.
Let me put it to you this way. NOW, ALL of the people who used to beat me at Chess have LEFT THE CHESS CLUB and started their own little thing, supposedly nothing to do with me, but meanwhile they can NO LONGER beat me so they stopped coming to the club. So unless you want to be like the best chess player all of a sudden and freak everybody out how they can no longer win against you no matter what they do or try. You may want to reconsider this. I have lost nearly all of my friends because of this book and now sit at the computer playing unsuspecting victims online. I even let them win and this book is making me feel dirty. Like some sort of Chess Hustler or something.
Exceptionally well written! This book is one of the more "friendly" chess books I've read. The author writes in a very conversational tone and it was enjoyable to read, not in a technical tone one might expect from this type of guide. Also, the author assumes only a basic knowledge of how to play, yet manages to teach an expert foundation. Many examples and free resources so that the reader can try the ideas out right away!
I am trying to be nice, but the book has barely any technical content. The principles the author presents are valid, but anybody who is beyond an absolute beginner already knows this.I'm glad I only spent $3 on the electronic version, because to have waited for the paperback would have been a big let down.
This is my second book by Maxen Tarafa. Very satisfied. Simple explanations to several chess principles and serious concern to help the reader learn the game. The book is certainly for beginners and the beginners will appreciate it.
VERY good illustration of how chess can make sense improve your game at the same time. I have tried and given up chess several times in the past because, as much as I wanted to earn some respect in the game, the board just never quite made sense to me. Maxen Tarafa can show ANYBODY how to become a better, faster, and more strategic player! I thoroughly enjoyed his recounts of personal experiences playing chess and how he was able to learn each and every time! This book has reignited my desire to give the game another try. And this time I'm equipped with a new understanding that was made simple! CHESS PLAYERS.....BUY THIS BOOK! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
Filled with illustrations, Chess: Conquer Your Friends is well worth the price, especially if you're just starting out in the game or perhaps looking to upgrade your moves. Everything is spelled out in easy to follow steps which will soon have you playing like a master! Highly recommended!
Don't waste your money. You can learn these skills by reading free online content. Cheap but I want my money back.
