Amazon.com Review

In this book, MacEowen, a teacher of the spiritual traditions of Scotland and Ireland, issues a call to readers longing to live a more authentic life to wake up from "the land of sleepwalkers." "Too many of us squander our lives," he writes, "filling our minds with a crazed habitual raciness that is hard to throw off." MacEowenÂ’s purpose is to show us how to break free of our unconscious habits to place our awareness where it matters, living from the perspective of our inner senses and informed by our souls. The "Mist" he speaks of is a metaphor for spirituality used by Celtic peoples. Drawing on his own personal experiences and myths and poems of the Celts and Druids, MacEowen introduces readers conditioned by modern Western society to a world of mystery and meaning that is ours to enter into at any time, were we only to become more aware of it. Throughout the book, he also shares various exercises to help us further that awareness, and in the process he makes a compelling argument that the "good life" that all of us yearn for can only be found when we live each day with a sense of "wonderment and wakeful purpose" that is in tune with our divine birthright. With The Mist-Filled Path, MacEowen joins writers such as John OÂ’Donahue (Anam Cara) and Caitlin Mathews (The Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom) in introducing readers to the ancient spiritual traditions of "the misty green isles" of Ireland and Scotland that gave meaning to their inhabitants for many centuries, and which still hold value for us here in the 21st century.

This book is **PHENOMENAL**. If, like me, you are an avid reader and spiritual seeker, you've probably read every book there is about different spiritual paths (including nature-based, pagan, Celtic, etc), mysticism, different world religions & wisdoms, teachings and various teachers and methods of applying the teachings... perhaps, like me, you got to a point where they all seemed the same. Perhaps, like me, you got to a point where pursuing a spiritual path had itself become a compulsive and desperate task, fueled by emptiness, too many words and so much knowledge but so little understanding. If so, you'll really love this book. In fact, I am confident that anyone who truly cares about the spiritual life and the inner world will just gobble up this book. It's earthy, humble, but clearly built on a large knowledge-base; I feel, when I'm reading it, like I am talking to an old friend or teacher. Sometimes this path can be a lonely one, as I feel it takes time to meet fellow travellers who are sincere and who you can feel comfortable with... so it's easy to become isolated. If you share that feeling, then this may help you along until you find your local tribe. This book is a true blessing on my life. I'm grateful I'm reading it, and I'm grateful that he wrote it.

This is NOT a novel. It is a description of the practice of Celtic spirituality by an American-Irish man who finds Celtic Shamanism via Native Americanspiritual practice. It is very well written with object exercises and practices described in the course of this book. It IS one man's story, if there is a narrative, of his journey to Celtic Practice and I, at times, found his personal insights to be a bit off the mark for my experiences but that is really not a negative enough point to deny the value of this book. I would recommend it to any American interested in practicing Celtic Shamanism.

I enjoyed how Frank MacEowen eases the reader down the path with a smooth rippling of words. Having long been a solitary druid(since age 6, am currently 33), I look for books that share others own journeys as a global overviews to guide mine. The author has a firm grip on the Philosophy aspects of druidry without pushing it as a religion(which some would debate it is or is not one). He also kept the past in it's place at the center of our present and futures, which I understand that many others take issue with, perhaps that is because their own paths do not yet contain a direction but rather just a open space to be determined once they have decided what they are looking to find. I also enjoyed that he stayed true and did not feel the needs to wash every aspect so that it was ever so pretty and perfect. If I was looking for a happy go perfect faery tale I would most likely be browsing the disney section. The reality of life is that good and bad have always been and will always be, but it is only a matter of understanding the when of those things in roaming this journey. He doesn't throw anything under that magical rug in order to seem oh so awesome, I feel that it was how he took on the shades of grayness that make him one of my preferred authors. I know that some consider this "weak" , but that might because a side effect of their own misunderstandings. I have found from both this book and others by same author, that he is real. He tries to guide the readers to define their own paths, by sharing the experiences of his without yelling that you must take highway 1 in life in order to reach destination C. I believe that most of those who have taken such aims at him as "racists" perhaps used his words to form thoughts which were clearly not within the bindings of his writing. Remember that there are 26 letters in the English understood alphabet and an infinite number of ways to misunderstand how they are used.

I purchased this book as an experiment to see whether 'this type of thing' was for me. It also took me forever to pick up the book (it sat by my bed waiting for me for more than two months, at least). When I did, I planned to read it lightly (because I swear the thing mocked me), and put it back down after three pages. I knew it would take more than that. When I was ready for it, the book was wonderful. It was impossible to put down, then became a slower re-read to make sure I gathered everything.MacEowan does an excellent job of being deeply spiritual without losing grip with 'the real world'. He is also clearly affected by the things that make people like him feel like a freak; I was especially shocked to learn that the music had a name (if this book is really for you, you know what I'm talking about). The author does not give the reader too much at any one time (except maybe the last chapter, which will be wonderful for those more in-depth with the other way of seeing, but may lose others), rather, he gradually increases the intensity and amount of what he's telling the reader. Also, though I am of a strongly Celtic background, I have no tolerance for people who assume we are the only ones who see. Clearly, people who feel that way have never heard an African drummer, or learned a Native American Indian dance. MacEowan makes it a point to state that all people have a spiritual connection, regardless of bloodline, though bloodline may effect how one traces that spiritual ability. He is not offensive, only partial to his own background, as we all are to our own. He writes from what he knows- who does not? Also, the book is very readable, and even if a reader does not like the material, he will certainly enjoy the tale of the author's journey inward. Also, the author makes some very good points for people with similar tendencies to his own, as well as provides them with references as to where they can try some of his experiences (prayer fast anyone?).The book is not one thing, either. It starts as an introduction (heavy and aware of what the real modern day life is), then lightens a bit to tell you the tale of how he came to be who he is, then helps you look into yourself.Soon after reading this book, I met a healer, and sent it with him when he took a trip north. He has not completed it as of yet, but has told me that he is enjoying what he's reading. As a contrast, I am a firm believer in the spirit world (and it's crossings with our own), he does not believe spirits exist at all- only energy. He is also not of Celtic background (though I believe the author would recognize pieces of the same soul).Overall, a very good read for the spiritual, the curious, and the lost.
