I am grateful to Ms. Mernissi for this scholarly review. The critique that this reads like a term paper reflects the serious scholarship and the edition I read published by Indian University Press was worthy to be read. This is not a light, superficial examination. I especially appreciated the clear explanation of how the repression of the feminine has its roots in the long history of Islam but there is a countervailing trend that sought and still seeks to establish true equality for women.Education as a catalyst for the changes that are ensuing for women's rights throughout the Muslim world was well presented. I wish Mernissi had more fully explored the theme of Freud's passive view of the feminine as it contrasts with the propensity in Islam to deal with the more active feminine sexuality through overt repression.Mernissi notes that "While Muslim exploitation of the female [feminine principle] is cloaked under veils and hidden behind walls, Western exploitation has had the bad taste of being bare and over-exposed." Today it seems modesty has been abandoned in the West. The underpinnings of the "hijab" and veiling are presented by Mernissi with a perspective that clearly aligns with feminist tradition and the movement to fully enfranchise women in society.This is a work of true scholarship that helps frame the subject of the veil and the "hijab" (note the term "hijab" refers both to the covering of the head and the entire realm of modesty designed to avoid arousing chaos within the Muslim community by women who are not covered). The updated Introduction is very helpful but I would like to see a more recently updated Preface to the book.

Wow! This book really raises some serious, thought-provoking questions regarding female sexual status, and sexual self-determination in Arab-Muslim societies. If I had read this book in the 70s - when it was first written and published - I would have really thought of it as a classic work, but I wasn't born then.Yet, the book is incredibly outdated. Mernissi does a good job in questioning the general notions (and misconceptions) widespread in her days about religion and the inferiority of women. However, she is out of touch with the contemporary revolutionary ideas that claimed Islam back from the selfish authority of the benighted "Mullahs," who misinterpted Islam out of ignorance, or to fulfill their own political agendas (as still happening in some Muslim countries, wherein Muslim women are subjugated and denied basic rights, such as education.)Working at the courts in my conservative Gulf country, I witnessed cases in which women "self-determinedly" divorced their husbands, who could not satisfy them sexually. (Lol, awww! I can't believe I'm saying this!)Even with some historical and Islamic inaccuracies (for instance, many hadiths - Prophetic traditions - quoted by Mernissi have been outruled as inauthentic by contemporary Islamic scholars, thus invalidating many of her arguments and theories), I found this book to be very interesting, and it sheds light - though indirectly, and perhaps unintentionally - on Moroccan history and culture. The chapter on Mothers-in-Law was especially amusing!It is unfair to criticize the book without taking into consideration the fact that it was written decades ago, and until the latest edition (1985), it must have been current. Instead of complaining about the book and its outdated content, I think I'll just go ahead and write a well-researched book on the same topic!

Despite a fair amount of attention given to this book in the popular press a few years ago, it is not a book for a general audience. It reads like a long term paper, using terms like "symbolic capital" for "ideas", for example (although to be fair, this English version is a translation). It is also out of date, since even though the publication date is 1985, most of it was written in 1970. As for how well it covers the subject stated in the title, I was disappointed. Many times in the text, Mernissi writes "I will now examine (a topic)" yet at the end of the section, I didn't feel that she had. Especially missing in my mind was information on what the "liberated" muslim women are saying about themselves, about being educated to the same level as men, and working outside of the home for wages. Mernissi reports having had unstructured interviews with six such modern women, but except for listing their ages, marital status, and occupations in a table, never mentions them again. These are women who were breaking new ground in male-female relations in 1970 but we don't get to hear what their experience was. Instead we get a series of basically philosophical discussions on the roles of women, men, and the heterosexual relationship in Morrocan Islamic society based on Islamic texts hundreds of years old. This book is really for political science or religious studies majors only.

This is an amazing book. I teach Excel, and I don't have time to Google things for hours to learn my trade. Besides the fact that this was the ONLY dedicated Excel 2010 book I could find (I didn't look too hard though), I have to say it is truly a stellar book. Well-organized, great examples, clear and clean writing style - a MUST HAVE!!!So why only 4 stars?Because even though the examples are terrific - they do not include a CD with the book, nor could I find the examples online. Worse, I wanted to recreate the charts in the book but most of the pictures only show the resulting charts and not the data that went into making them. Even a photo of the data sets would allow me to recreate them when I read it - and this is not a book you just are going to pick up and read out of boredom; you want to read for understanding and mastery.I have Mr. Excel's Pivot Table and Number Crunching book; it too is absolutely fabulous but suffers the same problem. In that books's case, the exercise files are available online but they simply do not correspond to the text very well - I spent a LOT of time massaging the files until they bear a reasonable resemblance to the original, but I shouldn't have to spend hours at that.Bill Jelen, are you listening? Your stuff is FABULOUS man, but you've got to beef up the example engine.Thanks,Mike

Looked through all the Excel books at Barnes & Noble yesterday, and this one seemed by far the most helpful.The author doesn't just talk about HOW to create a certain chart, he describes WHY you would want to use one chart vs another to communicate info.I will probably buy the Kindle version so I can easily search it. However because it's so visual this would be a good one to have in pulp as well.I particularly liked:1) the paired comparison chart how-to, with the examples from how Mad Magazine used them2) the positive-neutral-negative chart example from Gene Zelazny? at McKinsey

I got my money's worth from this book in the first few minutes of reading it. I sometimes find Excel's charting feature hard to use. I am a scientist and therefore think in terms of x and y, in terms of dependent and independent variables, and not in terms of "categories" and "series", like Excel. This means I used to have to spend more time than I like getting a graph or chart to look just right for a professional presentation.Not so anymore! This book really helps you quickly understand how Excel gets your data into a graph. It does not waste your time with a lot of verbose text.If you get the Kindle version, you can easily search for just the information you need at the moment. I have the Kindle version, but I have been reading it on an iPad in the computer lab at my university. It is so easy to use and much better than carrying around a heavy book.

...this book really helped me at work to represent data in exceptional ways but not so complex that you lose the audience. My managers at least didn't have time for elaborate demos on how to understand what they were seeing. I just graphed as instructed in the book and BOOM they changed their strategies as needed.

I am not really using this for stocks, but it is insightful and will help me get some of the rather mundane charts in Excel somewhat more appealing and useful.

I used this guide tfor three years out of the college library. After I graduated I bought my own copy for future reference.

Works for what I needed. Not exhaustive and leaves something to be desired but overall short and informational for a novice

Masatoshi Nakayama is a true master. A great Karate legend. He was a Karate genius. His Shotokan Karate is exact and dynamic. It explains the basics and concepts in great detail and the illustrations and photo are very good. I am a Karate Teacher and I recommend this book for all levels of practice. He has passed away but his work lives on.

I cannot sing enough praises to this series of books. Together with the title Dynamic Karate, they form a foundation upon which to advance your karate with rock solid kihon information.I started to practice karate at the age of 16. After a long period of medical school and residency training during which practicing karate was out of the question, I got back to it at the age of 38. In my comeback I found out that the spirit of karate had changed. When I started, the emphasis was on learning good kihon and good kata, so that your kumite skills would have a strong foundation. It was also on the moral values of karate. Now, I feel that much of that is being lost and kumite and competition is all many karateka think of.This series of books presents karate in the light of an era of change. Sensei Nakayama lived in a generation marked by the transition of the karate as taught by Funakoshi, who believed it was unsuitable for competition, to an era where competition, if not the single purpose, has become one of the main goals of karate practitioners.When you read Funakoshi's books, it is easy to grasp how he viewed karate: a martial art meant to discipline ones body, improve ones health and lifespan, rein in ones violent impulses, and promote the sense of respect and politeness towards others, especially ones would be opponents. In summary, karate was to span a persons whole being and attitude, both inside the dojo as well as outside. Maybe especially outside.Sensei Nakayama clearly inherited that way of thinking and added to it a scientific view of body mechanics and systematic organization of techniques and concepts. He also presents excerpts of famous tactical experts of the past, many of whom where not karateka, but swordsman or strategists as they were called. Those excerpts represent the concept that all martial arts are the same in terms of rational, only the methods and weapons vary. The need for strategy, for constant training and for the understanding of the spirit is of paramount importance.While learning Karate-do from a book is impossible, complementing what we learn at our dojo with technical information provided by this series of books is certainly very desirable. I dare say it is desirable regardless of your karate style. I hail from Kenyu-Ryu karate, which tends to use karate stances that are higher. But still, I feel that 100% of the books still apply.

Good introduction, but the book could use enhanced explanations for the different actions within the Shotokan System.

If you practice any hard style Japanese or Okinawan Karate - BUY THIS BOOK.Photographs and definitions are worth twice the price you pay.Volume 1 gets you started on the fundamentals and you get Heian 1-5 with Tekki 1 katas included.You will be happy with this book.

This is an ongoing series based on the same format: specific subjects (dogs, faces, horses, flowers) with a built in tutorial guide for specific learning projects using a wide variety of media.Released 19th March 2019 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 144 pages and available in paperback format.This is a clearly written and accessible book with a logical layout. The first chapter (12% of the page content) is a very condensed introduction to tools and associated media (lifting, granulation, and masking fluids). The included intro is not meant as a primary instruction, so is more suited to intermediate or advanced artists who are already familiar with the techniques. The following chapter (10%) covers basic techniques for pencil, acrylic, oils, pastels, and watercolors. There are also sub-chapters with more in-depth equine anatomy (eyes, features, anatomy, and proportion).The following 6 chapters include many small tutorial projects with step-by-step instructions. These will be familiar to everyone who has used a similar guide in the past.This one is well written and meticulously illustrated. The graphics are lovely (see cover). This is mostly a technique manual for developing a specific drawing and painting skill set which can also be applied to other subjects, if desired.Four stars. I love these guides. This is a fantastic art book with gorgeous illustrations with step-by-step projects for several different horses or foals. There is the basic template for drawing the side view of a horse's head and a 3/4 view also. Illustrations all the way through showing how to use pencil, acrylics, oil, watercolor, and my favorite - pastels!So it not only shows the reader how to draw the horse of their choice but how to add color or shade with graphite.This would be good for beginners with the drawing and maybe beginners to intermediate for coloring.Wonderful book! I plan to pick it up!

This book is an art instruction book focused on drawing and painting horses. They started with some brief descriptions of art materials and techniques. Then they moved on to step-by-step portraits of horses and ponies: different breeds, adults and colts, and viewed from different angles. They had several demonstrations each for pencil, oil and acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and colored pencils. They assume you have some skill in your chosen medium, so the directions were basically 'use these colors to draw these things in this order.' If you have trouble creating the correct coat color or getting the horse in proportion, this book will probably be helpful.I received an e-book review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

If you love horses and want to develop your talents and techniques for drawing them, this book will be an excellent guide. It is helpfully divided by mediums, types of horses and horse features and also includes numerous how-tos. The many tips and projects, along with the excellent photographs and illustrations, will help you as you progress. So much is demonstrated in these pages, even including how to sharpen your pencils!
