Art Studio: Horses & Ponies is a tutorial guide for all things equine. This is an ongoing series based on the same format: specific subjects (dogs, faces, horses, flowers) with a built in tutorial guide for specific learning projects using a wide variety of media.Released 19th March 2019 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 144 pages and available in paperback format.This is a clearly written and accessible book with a logical layout. The first chapter (12% of the page content) is a very condensed introduction to tools and associated media (lifting, granulation, and masking fluids). The included intro is not meant as a primary instruction, so is more suited to intermediate or advanced artists who are already familiar with the techniques. The following chapter (10%) covers basic techniques for pencil, acrylic, oils, pastels, and watercolors. There are also sub-chapters with more in-depth equine anatomy (eyes, features, anatomy, and proportion).The following 6 chapters include many small tutorial projects with step-by-step instructions. These will be familiar to everyone who has used a similar guide in the past.This one is well written and meticulously illustrated. The graphics are lovely (see cover). This is mostly a technique manual for developing a specific drawing and painting skill set which can also be applied to other subjects, if desired.Four stars. I love these guides. This is a fantastic art book with gorgeous illustrations with step-by-step projects for several different horses or foals. There is the basic template for drawing the side view of a horse's head and a 3/4 view also. Illustrations all the way through showing how to use pencil, acrylics, oil, watercolor, and my favorite - pastels!So it not only shows the reader how to draw the horse of their choice but how to add color or shade with graphite.This would be good for beginners with the drawing and maybe beginners to intermediate for coloring.Wonderful book! I plan to pick it up!
This book is an art instruction book focused on drawing and painting horses. They started with some brief descriptions of art materials and techniques. Then they moved on to step-by-step portraits of horses and ponies: different breeds, adults and colts, and viewed from different angles. They had several demonstrations each for pencil, oil and acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and colored pencils. They assume you have some skill in your chosen medium, so the directions were basically 'use these colors to draw these things in this order.' If you have trouble creating the correct coat color or getting the horse in proportion, this book will probably be helpful.I received an e-book review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
If you love horses and want to develop your talents and techniques for drawing them, this book will be an excellent guide. It is helpfully divided by mediums, types of horses and horse features and also includes numerous how-tos. The many tips and projects, along with the excellent photographs and illustrations, will help you as you progress. So much is demonstrated in these pages, even including how to sharpen your pencils!
