Also, the same symbol can assume altered significance depending on its depiction, culture, or religion. For instance, the book--always of interest to the writer in me--on a gravestone carries several different meanings. A closed book means the deceased lived a long life (as in long enough to finish the last page). Conversely, an open book means the person's life was cut short. And an open book with a draped cloth over it "represents the veil of death cutting a life short before the final page of the deceased person's life was written" (181).Understanding Cemetery Symbols is a guide that will appeal to anyone interested in history, historical cemeteries, or symbols. I'm placing my copy on my reference shelf for easy access.
When I ordered this book I thought it would be good for information concerning cemetery symbolism. I was wrong. It is GREAT!!!! This has already become my go to guide for all types of cemetery information. By far the best book I have come across! Well worth the price!
Tui is amazing! I read this cover to cover. She included such interesting information and it’s helping me to understand my genealogy on a whole new level. The way that they would bury a person, the symbols they would use were indicative of their heritage. Sometimes they would do things because they were traditional but didn’t know exactly why they were doing them. Much like the Christmas tree and the Yule log are Celtic symbols adopted by the Catholic Church to be inclusive. These symbols are all around. Speaking to us today in a language that needs no audible voice. If we just know how to hear it. Tui Snyder is our translator. Thank you Tui!
Another great book by Tui Snider! Wonderfully written, throughly researched & definitely a labor of love!
I have always had an interest in old graves in cemeteries, dating back to my childhood. Now I have been working on my family tree through Ancestry.com, and this book explains many of the burials and many other things I've come across. For instance, I did not know the flow for naming children and was puzzled by every first-born son being named after his father (resulting in centuries of men with the exactly the same name), nor did I ever before see first-born daughters being named for their mothers. Needless to say, this results in much confusion. This book is full of factual, and at times, humorous, anecdotes about cemeteries.
Packed full of information and symbolism, especially for us graveyard sightseers looking for a story.

I always enjoyed walking through a cemetery and looking at the stones. Now it will give it a much deeper meaning. I really enjoyed reading this book!
