In just having recently completed a development project creating portlets for the first time with a Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) compliant portal server, I hope I can provide some insight into the effectiveness of this book, since I used it to hit the ground running. Simply put, I agree with some of the other reviews here that this book is very well put together. The progression of content that the author provides from one chapter to the next is effective for those newly tackling portal development. As a consultant in such a situation, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introducing Portals and Portlets"), Chapter 2 ("The Portlet Lifecycle"), Chapter 3 ("Portlet 2.0 API: Portlet Objects and Container-runtime Options"), Chapter 6 ("Using the Portlet Tag Library"), Chapter 7 ("Getting Started with Spring Portlet MVC"), and Chapter 11 ("Communicating with Other Portlets"). The UML sequence diagrams that the author provides greatly aided the material. And believe it or not, even at almost 600-pages the author even thankfully left out the fluff that one can unfortunately often expect in other developer texts of this genre.That said, however, potential readers need to be aware of what this book does and does not provide. Unless the reader is using Liferay, the most frequently referenced portal server in this book, they should not expect to be able to get up to speed with any specific portal server. My target portal server, for example, was IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0, and this specific portal server is only mentioned in passing a few times by the author. Usage of the XML Configuration Interface, commonly known as XMLAccess, for example, which is a requirement when using the portal server in my project environment, was not covered. Personalization rules and managing portal pages was also not covered. As with other Java specifications, much is left up to implementers with regard to what is under the covers, but as with application servers, portal servers also provide features that sit outside these specifications. While I did not purchase this text expecting that the WebSphere implementation would be covered, as a novice in this space I also was not aware how much I would be dependent on product specific features. Well recommended guide and reference for those new to portal development, especially with Spring Portlet MVC.

This book has been my crown savior in a sea of google searching! There isn't a single source that is as comprehensive as this book. If you're looking to get in to portlet development, this is the best place to start. A little bit of background in servlets does make the reading go a bit faster, but is not required. Step by step guides with images and examples fill every chapter alongside detailed explanations and definitions. Thank you for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive book!

After reading this I would like to congratulate author as he has given a book which is helpful for new as well as experienced portal/portlet developers.This book gives a complete insight of Portlet technology as well as Spring Portlet MVC framework with good code examples.The author has covered almost everything necessary for portlet development e.g. portal framework explanation, various frameworks that can be used for portlet development and advanced topics like Ajax integration with portlet technology with examples including several JavaScript libraries and Ajax frameworks like DOJO,DWR.This book is a must have for all Portlet developers.

Having recently purchased a bread machine, I've been looking around for ways to get the most out of it, and this book has a wealth of recipes to do exactly that. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the book is clearly written by someone who has not just knowledge of how to use this machine, but a real enthusiasm for it. The fact that its a Kindle book i find really useful as well - I always have my tablet on me, so I can select a recipe - pickup up the ingredients on the way home from the shops, and then get going! Highly recommended.

One night, only a few weeks ago, I was scrolling through the Alex Rider adventures on Amazon. I have been a die hard fan for years, and I was interested in completing my collection. Like many others, I'm sure, I was sad when the series ended with "Scorpia Rising."Imagine my surprise, then, when I saw a section of the web page dedicated to "Alex Rider Books 1 - 10". After looking around, I saw that, indeed, Anthony Horowitz had decided to return to the world of MI6, Scorpia, spies, gadgets and the rest of it with "Russian Roulette : The Story of an Assassin." To say I was excited was an understatement. I ordered a copy, sat back, and waited.Looking back, I wish I had done just a bit more homework. When the book arrived, I greedily tore it open - and then stood staring in dismay. Because it turned out Alex Rider, the fourteen year old super spy, wasn't coming back after all.The book was a prequel.Soon, I came around, and began to read.I got over being disappointed very quickly."RR" opens up with a familiar face - the face of Yassen Gregororvich, the assassin who terminated Ian Rider in "Stormbreaker," which cast Alex into the spy world. In the beginning of the story, Yassen receives orders from his employers - Scorpia, one of the largest criminal bands in the world - to kill Alex, to punish the boy for defeating Herod Sayle. However, for the first time, Yassen is hesitant. Because, as readers of the series know, Yassen was trained by John Rider, Alex's father. But, there's a new element to his hesitation readers were not aware of in previous stories.Then begins the flashback...Fourteen year old Yasha Gregororvich is set on a life changing journey when his childhood home is destroyed by a powerful criminal. As Yasha grows into a man, he is bullied, mistreated, and must fight to survive, all the while being pulled into a world of evil and death he has no desire for, but won't let him go. In the end, it will be the pull of a trigger, and not his own choice, which decides his fate...All in all, the book was very good, giving us a very different picture of the seemingly bloodthirsty killer from "Strormbreaker" and "Eagle Strike". Yassen feels as though he was never given a chance to be anything but an assassin, and, in sympathetic understanding, tries to give Alex the shot for freedom he never had in a cool rewriting of the last scene in "Strombreaker," when Yassen kills Sayle."Next time they (MI6) ask you (to work for them), say no."However, the reason this is a four star is because of the gaping plot hole in the end.Spoiler alert.Now, there is a plot hole in this story, but I feel compelled to correct a mistake I made in an earlier review. I falsely stated that Yassen felt no loyalty to John Rider after discovering he was an agent for MI6. I reread the book, however, and saw what I had, eh, skipped.Yes, Yassen does, as I just said, figure out his mentor, Hunter, John Rider, the father of Alex Rider, was sent to infiltrate Scoria. The betrayal scars Yassen, and actually becomes the final domino in his journey as a killer.But Yassen did not reveal John to his superiors for two reasons - one, John had saved his life. Two, although he worked for them, Yassen hated Scorpia, and didn't care what happened to them....But that begs a new question, even as I correct my false claim. When Yassen dies in "Eagle Strike," why does he encourage Alex to work for Scorpia? Why does he did he seem to have such respect for Alex's father? "He was a killer like me..." What? Now Yassen is proud of himself?But this is a very good story, and earns its place at the Alex Rider table. Packed with emotion, action, and several cool cameos COUGH Mrs Rothman COUGH, it softens that soft spot left by "Scorpia Rising". And makes us hungrier for more.

This long-awaited novel reveals the biography of Yassen Gregorovitch, the mysterious Russian assassin in the Alex Rider series. Horowitz goes full-on from the beginning, as Yassen's childhood home is a village called Estrov, which happens to exist next to a biological weaponry factory, in which his parents are somehow tangled up. Then an accident occurs and the village is infected with anthrax, and the Russian government decides that obliterating the village with air-to-surface missiles is going to be easier than facing the media. Yassen, who was known as Yasha back then, escapes. From there the story is carried on to the Moscow gutters, billionaires' summer houses, and Scorpia's training facility in Malastago. The book fully explains Yassen's meeting with John Rider, Alex Rider, and Julia Rothman.The result is a high-octane game of Russian roulette, highlighting Yassen's struggles with his conscious and his eventual evolution into a cold-blooded murderer and his torment by the hands of Sharkovsky, a mafiaman who, quite literally, made him put up a revolver to his head.Recommended strongly if you read the Alex Rider series, even more strongly if you haven't.Lots of guns, weapons, and blood.Perfect.VBG

I've been waitin for this book since like....2008! or something like that, ever since Anthony mentioned it.idk why, but I loved Yassen, even though he was a "villain". There was just something about him.Of course, I was excited for the other Alex books, but I was still waiting and waiting for this, and it's finally here!Most of the other books I waited to get until they came out in paperback (so i could afford them haha), but I couldn't wait for this one!And I loved every second of it! Seeing how Yassen grew up, his friends, how he came accross Scorpia....It was just awesome, seeing him change and become the assassin we "know"I highly recommend this to everyone who's read the other 9 books of the series, and even for those who haven't, it's the perfect place to start! the series comes fully circle. This is the beginning of Alex's journey as well, since it involves his father somewhatI can't believe it's over!!! :(But THANK YOU ANTHONY!!! I will reread them over and over again forever :)

My teenage daughter loves this series and owns all of the books in the Alex Rider series. She's read each one numerous times ....seriously.

This prequel to the Alex Rider series features his oldest enemy and tells the story of how an assassin is made. Told in the same voice and style of the Rider books it adds both depth to the main character but also to his many confrontations with Rider.Some fans may be disappointed Alex Rider doesn't feature more in this suspenseful novel, but it stands alone as a fine thriller and offers new insight to the series and one of its most enigmatic characters.

I love the Alex Rider series, and think they are one of the best young adult series available. But, if you've read them all, you know they are pretty traumatic. I'm surprised they are still classified in Young Adult. Russian Roulette-the title says it all. It IS the story of an Assassin-a 19 y/o assassin. And it's not pretty. But, it is well written and if you're a fan, it's a great book. Hard to put down. But, Horowitz is just right on the edge here; in fact I predict many "challenges" for this book and quite possibly, a few actual bans.

I discovered that reading Stephen King, after an extended abscence, is akin to running into an old friend you have not seen for long time. Your grateful for the oppertunity and anxious to hear what she has to say, because she always has a great story to tell! Cell, is an intensely paced horror story, that delivers a barage of shocks that will cause you to shudder. It differs from many other King offerings, lacking his usual elaborate characterizations, town histories, and delayed gratification. Instead he yanks readers off their feet within the first few pages; drags them into this frightening world, and offers little chance for respite until the very last page. I loved this book, as should other readers, who enjoy a good scare!!

Cell is an OK book but it does move a little slow. It is a typical Stephen King book, so if you like SK it will probably be a good read. If you are not a SK fan and just want to see what he does with a Zompoc book, skip it.As with many of SK's books the human element is the main story not the events going on in the world, they are just a backdrop. There are several threads that seem like they might go somewhere interesting only to be resolved with very little satisfaction.And as is his style SK leaves the ending to the reader to fill in, which kind of leaves the story seem unfinished.

This like many of Stephen King's novels is both a terrible look at mankind and a wondrous look at what could be. The Cell, my 3rd time reading it, does not fail to deliver horror and gore, yet also brings the beauty of one mans search for his family after an apocalyptic phone call. 4 survivors who didn't get the call try to survive in a new world where those who did now rule the day. Heart wrenching, funny, thoughtful and thrilling this book will keep you reading throughout the night.

When it comes to this book, "Cell" I can't help but read it over and over again. When my husband bought me a Kindle Fire HDX for Christmas I was thrilled. Too bad you can't get ebook versions of all the books you already own, but since you can't, this was definitely one of the books in my collection that I had to buy again for my Kindle. Absolutely Love this book!King's storyline gives us an alternate version of a zombie apocalypse. Those who were unfortunately using their cellphones, directly or indirectly, turned into zombie-like creatures who are driven by hunger and anger, begin to maim and kill, ripping apart anyone they see. Everyone who was "Not" using their cell phone, attending a meeting by speaker phone, or even as tweens tend to do (listening without the speakerphone feature, with heads together) at the time of the Pulse are spared, from the pulse that is.Our main character, waiting in line at the ice cream truck stares in shock as those around him, basically turn bat-sheet crazy, attacking and killing, even eating one another, well, ripping their throats out with their teeth anyway, not really eating like the typical Zombie fare.With the vivid imagination of Stephen King, so many events were clear to my mind's eye. I'm sure that instead of a bus being driven intentionally into the lobby of a hotel, the movie version (starting at the airport instead of the park) will have airplanes intentionally crash landing instead.Our main, secondary and other characters hide from the phone-crazies as the city burns. And that's just the start of the book. As things begin to settle, the phone crazies evolve into a flock-like collective, who like birds begin to exhibit a type of telepathic communication. That's when things get Really interesting. I can't wait to see the differences between the book and movie, especially now that it's finally arrived.No noticeable typos, errors in sentence structure, well developed characters, well thought out storyline. I love this book so much I currently own Paperback, Kindle, hopefully soon in Blu-ray format as well. Highly Recommended.

As a trial lawyer myself, I have started reading and enjoying books about the relationship between the law and storytelling. I was expecting this book to be more of a treatise on storytelling, but it (unabashedly) wound up being a chance for Shapiro to tell great stories from his career. Although it wasn't quite what I was looking for, I can't deny that I had a wonderful time reading this book. There is a lot of wisdom you can gain from this book if you go into it with an open mind. It's funny, it's sharp, and it teaches many important lessons about why storytelling is an oft overlooked skill in today's world. Pick it up. You won't regret it.(Also, I read this book before watching Goliath on Amazon Prime. I know this isn't a Goliath review, but that's worth your time as well. Highly entertaining!)

The book is a collection of stories with various dregrees of relevance, dry humor and legal insights. Most of the book is devouted to recollection of personal stories from the author, that has certainly met interesting people and seems to be an interesesting fellow himself. To say that the fundamental elements of rhetoric in this book are scarce is an overstatement, but that isn't the point anyway. Shapiro weaves a pleasant narrative of the function of stories in legal profession, frequently affirming his ethos and pathos. He is a wildly successful legal pratictioner and a TV screenwriter. He also seems an amiable, cool guy. His logos, however, speaks more of elegance than of substance. This is a book about mild entretainment, not much about persuasiveness or Law.

If you are a lawyer, you should read this book. If you want to become a lawyer, you should read this book. If you hate lawyers, you should read this book.The "art" of storyteller is the heart, mind, and soul of lawyering. But like a lot of art, most of us do it poorly, as amateurs, or hobbyists.This book is an interesting look, and a subtle study, of the art of storytrlling. If you read it, you will find it an enjoyable, breezy read, and you will not even realize you are learning to tell a story.

It's well written and does give quite a few insights into writing in general but also what makes good writing. His writing style his very forward and at times made me chuckle because of the real life examples he gives. He explains the three basics: ethos, logos, and pathos. He goes into detail as to why giving attention (even minimally) to these three aspects in your writing it important. The author also explains almost everything without being too preachy or pedantic. While I won't highly recommend this book, it was worth reading, and for the $14 I paid for my copy it was definitely worth it.

Decent book but not really that much of a practical how to guide.

Excellent resource for the lawyer or anyone interested in becoming more persuasive and credible. The writing is crisp and funny, while also brimming with practical wisdom. Will have a permanent place in my personal library.

I enjoyed this book funny antidotes. Could not put it down.

Absolutely mind blowing. It has perfect doses of information, entertainment and practical example. It reads just like a very good script!
