Initially, this book was recommended by a friend ... so as someone who has been experimenting with "the medicine," I ordered it from Amazon. Ten days later, another copy came to me in the mail from the publisher with a press kit to promote the idea of me having Dr. Harris as a guest on my Pathways Radio program and podcast. This was too much of a synchronicity, so I immediately asked my producer to book the interview and began reading the book.Far from just another reading assignment to prepare for an interview program, I was taken in by the readability of the book, considering the author’s formidable credentials as a scientist. I became fascinated by the author's unique research study, which revealed healing effects that Ayahuasca would produce over time, long after the cathartic ceremony itself. And many of the author's psychotherapy clients described the internal experiences I had been noticing in myself during the 6 month period when I had tried it a few times. I’ve read a few books on Ayahuasca, but this one was not only academically interesting, it deepened the impacts of my own personal experience.The book strikes an eloquent balance between the scientific and the personal, including the author's own experiences, which were graciously but non-pretentiously shared. Must read for those considering using this medicine! Also must read Joe Tafur's book: The Fellowship of the River. After reading these two books you will be WELL informed about how to approach this sacred medicine, and that is with the utmost respect. This is not for the faint of heart. Even if you are already a journeyer these books will serve you well. Better than Terrence McKenna, yes. Much more useful, practical and informative.

I tend to have reservations about reading, listening to, taking advice from people who say “do this or do that” yet have no real experience in doing “this or that.” In more familiar terms, I would not take financial advice from broke authors.However, Rachel’s book was written from not only a practitioners voice but from a patient/participants voice as well; a rare treasure! I read a lot of personal growth and development books and this by far was one of the most powerful, raw and moving works I’ve ever stumbled upon.I, personally, have never done any psychedelics but was searching for some sort of relief for my partner who suffers from significant depression, and is becoming more unresponsive to traditional medications. After reading this I now know more than I ever thought possible without traveling myself. If my partner is willing and we can locate a therapist who is familiar with plant medicines, I hope she will consider a journey for healing herself...after she reads “Listening to Ayahuasca “of course.

This book is unique because the author wears so many hats- therapist, participant in ceremonies, skeptic of spirits, friend, convert and cautioner. I deeply enjoyed reading it- she's transparent throughout about her own blindspots and imperfections. She asks a lot of the questions I have wanted to ask of shamans- so that made this read doubly satisfying.

In this wonderful and engaging book, Rachel Harris leads the reader on a fascinating journey about ayahuasca. I loved the conversational tone, the personal insights, and the wealth of material not available anywhere else. As a psychologist, a researcher, and thoughtful partiipant-observer, Harris writes about what she calls the full awareness of magical realism in the ayahuasca experience. This book is a must-have for adventurers interested in ayahuasca and for people interested in the helpful psychological reach of shamanic and herbal remedies.

Regardless of whether you are already listening to Ayahuasca, have plans to tune in, or are simply interested in an alternative medicine that is cloaked in mysticism, you will find this book captivating. Dr. Harris presents the results of her groundbreaking study in a manner equally accessible to academicians and the lay person. But this book is much more than the presentation of unusual research findings. Beautifully written, it is a story of people wanting, and frequently finding, their way to a better life. It is the spiritual journey of a woman whose honesty, caring and intelligence shines through every page.

There's isn't anything that I did not appreciate about this book. It's as if you are having a conversation with Dr. Harris as she explains and teaches you what she has discovered over the years of her research (and personal experiences). It was a fast read, even with all my highlighting and notes. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is...well, if you are reading this review you must have a slight interest, get the book, you will not regret it.

Beautiful, wonderful compilation of the health benefits, challenges, research and and healing experiences of ayahuasca. Thank you to the author for listening to the medicine and undergoing the research that is compiled in this book. The world needs this plant medicine’s healing. If you feel called to this realm or form of healing I highly recommend this book.

I bought this for my niece and nephew. They love to draw and love "how-to" draw books. I really liked this one because it's of leprechauns. I haven't seen any how-to books on these characters before. It's simple and easy and not as difficult for younger children (7 to 10) to follow. Some of the ogres and trolls and superhero books get too detailed! It's so inviting and easy to follow I even enjoyed trying my hand at this for upcoming St. Patrick's Day party banners! It's not just for kids!

How clever to pair nature and poetry. The talent is evident on each page with accurate, close-up photos of bugs familiar to us. The book shares with children, before they decide bugs are awful, how to appreciate them and have fun doing it. The clever introduction of poetry is also introduced before children can deduce that they don't like it. It is fun, it is light-hearted, and those parents smart enough to present this well-thought out book to their children early on will present the children an opportunity to enjoy and love what is not the usual. I also loved the drawn figures which helps to move your eyes to the bugs and to the poems. Clever and important. I will look forward to J. Patrick Lewis' and Frederic Siskind's next book!

My daughters and I enjoyed this book, particularly the stunning photographs. I've never been a fan of bugs (especially in my house), but this book gave me a whole new appreciation for the "beauty" of bugs. My 11-year-old daughter's favorite bug in the book is the Eastern Carpenter Bee because of the dazzling photo with the water droplets. My 9-year-old daughter's favorite bug is the Green Stinkbug due to the comical illustration. My favorite is the Eastern Dobsonfly, largely because the poem is fun and even a little romantic. The combination of gorgeous photography, amusing illustrations, and clever poems make Face Bug a unique and memorable book.

This will be a great addition to our poetry 4th grade unit. Hoping it might interest some of my less-than-excited-about-poetry boys!My personal girls loved the photos, and learned lots of "bug fact-os".

I love the way that it mixes great photography and illustrations in telling the story. I am going to purchase several more to give as gifts.

As a mother of two 3rd graders, I read a lot of children's books, especially Texas Bluebonnet books. This has to be one of the worst books I've seen my kids bring home. My kids read at a 5th grade level, but I still had to pause between each stanza just to explain to them the awful metaphors. Don't get this book, unless it's required. There are plenty of other books with interesting photos.

This story along with the fun illustrations was captivating to my toddler after a trip to the natural history museum and aquarium in which he saw real scuba divers getting into the water. For weeks afterwards he was dressing up as a scuba diver and sliding around on the floor. The story is somewhat detailed for a tot but he still got a lot out of parts of the story and the illustrations.

Wonderful story and beautiful illustrations. My students loved it.

I got this book for my kid, who love all things ocean. They really enjoy the book. It tells the story simply with beautiful pictures.

This hardcover book is a nice story but it is a little confused if it wants to be a small child's book or an older child's book. It appears to be a nice picture book and starts off at one level but then gets technical. I liked it because it is a true story and I like Jacques Cousteau.

We've accumulated quite an extensive storybook library at our house, and this was a fast favorite. The illustrations are beautiful - imaginative and colorful, definitely plenty to keep our five month old engaged. And the story is a substantial enough one (I even learned a fair amount about Jacques Cousteau from reading it) that I imagine we'll keep this one around for a long time, with our son growing into it.

Lawrence J. Fennelly is an internationally recognized authority on crime prevention, security planning and analysis, and on the study of how environmental factors (CPTED), physical hardware, alarms, lighting, site design, management practices, litigation consultants, security policies and procedures, and guard management contribute to criminal victimization.Mr. Fennelly was previously employed with Apollo Security, Computershare, Inc., as well as a sergeant at Harvard College, employed by the Harvard University Police Department in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was trained as a crime prevention specialist and served in this capacity for over 21 years at Harvard. He was also the department’s training officer and assistant court officer. As part of his role as an officer at Harvard, Larry also was a deputy sheriff in both Suffolk and Middlesex counties (Massachusetts). Mr. Fennelly is a frequent speaker and lecturer on CPTED, physical security, school crime, and other issues. He serves as an expert witness who works closely with attorneys in defense as well as plaintiff cases, assisting in case preparation, offering knowledgeable questions to ask the opposing side, etc. He has also done a considerable amount of consultant work throughout the United States. His experience ranges from identifying vulnerabilities to conducting security and lighting surveys, working with architects to design and implement security, and developing long range guard training programs and risk assessments of various facilities.He is also a prolific author. If you are reading this review, then you probably have no choice but to buy this book because it's for a college class. I get that. But let me tell you, the book is actually pretty good. The book makes ample use of real-world examples and is not just theory. Unfortunately, much of the material becomes repetitive, as you can only recommend cutting the bushes and installing lighting so many times in one text. Seriously though, the book does have some good material and presents it in an orderly, logical fashion, and does have content that would be beneficial to the student of crime prevention through environmental design.

This book is fine for some sections, but in others it's comical. I understand that feng shui used in the past and still today, but no boss or building inspector is going to go for it when putting together a realistic safety plan for a school system. It's also repetitive and seems to cover the same topics in different chapters.
