After waiting YEARS for Zane to add on to the series of Dr. Marcella, you would think she would have came swinging from tree limb to tree limb, but unfortunately, all she did was climb the tree. As some reviewers already stated, this wasn't the same Zane that I fell in love with ("Addicted," "Nervous," "Afterburn," "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and "The Hot Box"). The Prologue, which I believe is extremely too long, slightly turned me off from the book. It took me FOREVER to complete it. Once I finished it, the book picked up a little bit for me but it didn't give me the grittiness that I needed or wanted. I was disconnected from the character, although I felt sorry for her. The explosive sex scenes that Zane normally gives wasn't present in this novel. Caprice/Ladonna/Wicket's journey to revenge could've slightly been better. The last chapter--not Epilogue--did excite me though, but that was that. I was entertained in some areas, obviously since I finished the book, but there are missing pieces to the puzzles. I have questions. I felt like the ending was rushed. Just...it was an okay read.Part of me wishes the book would've been about Dr. Marcella. I wanna know more about her. After three books, I still don't know her besides the fact that she seems very nice, but what's her story. Can that be the fourth part, Zane? Also, why did Caprice/Ladonna choose the name Wicket? I hoped after everything else you tried to explain, there would have been an explanation of that. It's not important, but the thought ran across my mind. All in all, it was an okay read. I would forever support Zane because she puts out bangers. I KNOW she will come back better than this.

I only chose four stars because I thought in some spots in the book it was a lot of unnecessary explanations of thoughts. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book and it was a page turner but I did skip a lot of when the main character was "thinking random thoughts" and dragging it out. And although, I guess the main character had to be in the majority of the book, it bothered me that there wasn't a lot more going into life with Hannah and growing up with Mr.Sterling. Also, in the Epilogue, it was explained what happened with everyone else except KAD.

Ok, I’m going to be honest! Zane is by far one of my favorite authors, however, this book let me down. It moved extremely slow in the beginning and kept jumping from flash backs to present. I understand that Zane was trying to give us a better understanding into the main character, but it was a bit confusing and mentally draining time jumping so much. I usually like the main characters that Zane creates, but with this chick caprice, I felt annoyed. She was a narcissistic spoiled little brat. I also felt like the story needed less unecessary fillers and more exciting action. “Addicted” was my first book I read from Zane, and since then I’ve been hooked. All her other books have hooked me just as good. Nervous was also an excellent one. But this story here was a bit boring and a bit painful to read through. I felt like I was forcing myself to read through some details and skipping through some paragraphs because I was trying to “get to the point.” I read the reviews before buying the book and other reviewers said the same thing, but I wanted to judge for myself... well, i give it three stars because it wasn’t terrible, but considering what I know Zane is capable of, this was a huge let down.

Wicket/ Ladonna 's transformation was DEEP... I took the journey and understood her pain. I sympathized with her but I wouldn't dare want to empathize with her. This book was not only compelling but you gave a hell of a lecture (Professor Zane). Mental illness has many forms and most are misunderstood it is not singular "Crazy", in addition - counseling works if given a chance. I truly enjoyed this book - Nervous and Addicted. This is in my top 10 of books and I read constantly.

I have loved Zane since her first novel and have read every piece or work she has ever written. I was so excited to see this new book I preordered and waited for the release. The book starts with such potential then falls flat toward the end. It's disjointed and leaves something to be desired. It was the worse story told that really could have been great.

I have always enjoyed reading Zane books. This here is an eye opener to let us know that this is real disease but giving you a great story to really understand it. Big Ups to Zane for another great book!

Zane has always been one of my favorites...but for some reason this book did not seem well put together. I was left with so many unanswered questions...yet I was given so much detail about things that weren't necessarily important....The concept of the book is amazing though !!!!

I have been waiting for another Zane book and was excited to see this one come out. However just when the characters were developing and Wicket was going after her revenge it seemed like Zane just got tired of writing and ended the book with a nice neat bow. I really want as into the book and was somewhat disappointed with the lackluster ending

Review

“Extraordinary…French delves into the lives of some of the one million-plus Chinese migrants he says are now building careers in Africa…and the stories [he] tells are fascinating.”—The New York Times Book Review“Riveting…As a massive transactional process, China’s entry into Africa has been a dramatic success...but as an ideological and cultural undertaking, Mr. French’s masterly account suggests that it is getting nowhere.”—The Economist“Howard French…let[s] the Africans and Chinese speak for themselves as he travels through fifteen countries. The result is a rich, complex, and satisfying look at this strange marriage.”—The New York Review of Books“In his important new book, French weaves a rich tapestry of anecdotes, interspersed with numerous interviews with Chinese migrants and Africans alike, offering readers an eminently fair, occasionally humorous and sympathetic, but always engaging account….A searing, trenchant, and entertaining study of how China, in both an individual and collective sense, is shrewdly and opportunistically maximizing its relationships with African nations in an effort to extend its economic influence across the world. ”—The Christian Science Monitor“China’s trade with Africa has grown dramatically…But China’s investments…are less significant for this rapidly evolving relationship, according to this 15-country survey by veteran African correspondent French, than the significant flow of new Chinese immigrants—often pushed out by the pressure and oppression back home as much as lured by opportunity. In vivid first-person reportage, French explores this momentous phenomenon, while challenging assumptions about China and Chinese immigrants…The book will appeal to students of China and Africa, and anyone interested in the shifting contours of the global economy and its geopolitical consequences.”—Publishers Weekly“Although several recent books have discussed…China’s recent incursions into Africa in pursuit of resources and profit,…French has the advantage of significant personal experience in both Africa and China….Interacting with Chinese and Africans in Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Namibia, and elsewhere, French capably illustrates that although Chinese omnipresence in Africa may be a form of soft imperialism, it is also a result of the crushing pressures—lack of space, merciless business competition, pollution—of modern Chinese society.”—Booklist“Accounts of China’s foray into African markets are often made with numbers; French goes beyond the statistics and illuminates the accelerating involvement of Chinese migrants….These candid moments are arresting, delivered via seasoned and sensitive reporting.”—Democracy“Every once in a while, an author produces a work of reportage mixed with thoughtful analysis that can change the thinking on a question—or even rewriting the nature of that question...China’s Second Continent offers a very different—and provocative—perspective on China’s economic future, with special attention on Africa. Building on years of experience in both China and Africa, and following months of personal inquiry across the continent to search for answers to the questions of what China really wants in Africa, and how it is going to get there, French has effectively turned these questions on their head.”—Daily Maverick “The huge and growing ties between China and the African continent will be one of the most crucial relationships of the 21st century, and you simply could not invent a better guide to it than Howard French. Superbly written, rich in anecdote, insight, and a sense of the immense scale of what is happening, China’s Second Continent should be mandatory reading for anyone wanting to understand how our world is being reshaped.” —Adam Hochschild, author, King Leopold’s Ghost“We owe tremendous thanks to Howard French for this fascinating and deeply reported book. He is an audacious writer who takes his readers to the far-flung factories, farms and living rooms of the Chinese entrepreneurs who are flooding into countries like Mozambique, Zambia and Senegal. French intrepidly explores the other side of the global coin, giving voice to an array of Africans reacting warily to the new imperialists in their midst. This is an essential book for understanding not just China and Africa but our changing world.”—Peter Maass, author, Crude World“Almost no other writer would have dared the reportorial and story-telling challenge Howard French has set for himself in China’s Second Continent, and absolutely none could have pulled it off as well. This is foreign reportage and analysis presented as compelling human drama.”—James Fallows, author, China Airborne“In Howard French’s wonderfully engaging new book, he draws on his journalistic experience covering both China and Africa to weave together a series of vivid portraits which limn the country’s global rise in this remote and unlikely part of the world. What is so surprising about the stories he tells is that they chronicle everything from the constriction of massive stadiums, hospitals, universities, highways and mineral and energy extraction operations to small-scale shops, farms and family businesses. China’s Second Continent is a grand tale of the world’s newest diaspora, one that promises to change a previously largely forgotten continent.”—Orville Schell, Director, The Center on US-China Relations, Asia Society“Howard French has given us the most lush, fair, and expansive look yet at China’s role in Africa. This is a tale not strictly about China or Africa; it is about the encounter of civilizations and the energy produced in the collision. Infused with thought and sympathy, this is a book with no agenda other than fidelity to facts that were so difficult to gather on the ground.”—Evan Osnos, staff writer, The New Yorker “Is China’s burgeoning empire in Africa a ‘win-win’ for both parties? For the most comprehensive, closely-reported answer to this question, read this book. It’s full of surprises, from hard-driving frontiersmen looking for (and finding) countries with less corruption than they faced at home in China to healthy democracies constraining the more rapacious practices of extractive industry. I cannot imagine a better, more-qualified guide to this vast, fascinating subject than Howard French.” —William Finnegan, author, A Complicated War: The Harrowing of Mozambique“Howard French magisterially holds up both ends of his transcontinental bargain: fluent in the idioms of the two worlds, China and Africa, he reveals the variegated diaspora of the one million or so Chinese in Africa yet also drives home that Africa is awakening in turn. His pages are teeming with human beings of flesh and blood, and often outlandish characters, at the new frontier explored in this fascinating book.”—Stephen W. Smith, former Africa editor of Le Monde and professor at Duke University“An important contribution to a critical debate on China’s rapidly changing relationship with Africa. Howard French goes beyond official statistics to weave stories of new wave Chinese immigrants and the Africans whose lives they impact. Unlike ideologues who focus on motives, French seeks to discern the impact of this relationship on all drawn into its vortex.” —Mahmood Mamdani, Executive Director, Makerere Institute of Social Research, Kampala, Uganda and Herbert Lehman Professor of Government, Columbia University“Howard French is one of the most insightful American journalists to have covered Africa in the past twenty years. In this riveting and rich new book, he powerfully juxtaposes two worlds he is uniquely positioned to observe, namely China and Africa. Anyone who has recently spent time in Africa knows how important China is becoming on the continent. Yet French tells a nuanced story about the Chinese few will have previously understood. His storytelling is sharp and wise, the characters we meet are vivid and unforgettable, and the implications are profound and at times disturbing. Anyone interested in Africa and China, or more generally in migration and globalization, will find a wealth of material in this terrific book.”—Scott Straus, professor of political science at University of Wisconsin, Madison

A must read book!Listen up, all you former African Missionaries, AID workers, Peace Corps Volunteers and Diplomatic corps. We've dropped the ball in a very important part of the world! Read about the new kid on the African playing field who is picking up the ball that we-all seem to have fumbled during the last 40 years. That kid's name is China! Author Howard W. French has given us an eye-opener of a book and we need to read it and talk about how Africa fits into the long range planetary game. This is a quantum leap forward from the struggles outlined in my own Africa historical fiction novel of the 1990's.China is sending its people out on a global diaspora that seems to be infiltrating every African nation; much the same way that sixteenth century Europe financed entrepreneurs, trappers and traders to move to lesser developed parts of the world to benefit the homeland. Chinese farmers are being drawn enmass to the vast irrigable stretches along the Niger River in Mali to begin expanding rice production on a gigantic scale.Chinese miners and engineers are moving into mineral rich nations from Namibia and Mozambique in the south through the Congo and on north into Ghana and Senegal in West Africa. Scores of Chinese builders are setting up schools, stadiums, hospitals, roads and bridges in Zambia, Botswana and Nigeria. All these countries are areas that the West only wanted to exploit but never planned to develop. Africans, sensing that the rest of the technological world might leave them behind have therefore turned towards the rising sun to find new funding and expertise. This story, of course, is not all about lovely Chinese altruism, but rather a look at a model of development which the Chinese call win-win but, which in fact often gives the Chinese immigrants favored status in the country to do as they wish, while the African nation gets tokens of development and a lot of cash flowing into the pockets of the high officials within the country in order to keep them mollified. Does anyone out there still remember neocolonialism and imperialism? Will the Chinese become like the Portuguese or the British, or will they move beyond this initial exploitation to develop a vast commonwealth of African nations? As one who considers himself to be somewhat of an "Old Africa Hand," I find Howard French's somewhat rambling dissertation on how China is beginning to wield its power, intriguing yet a bit disconcerting. We could be losing the whole ball of wax of the African continent's vast wealth while we piddle around trying to see if we can install democratic governments into nations so diverse that we don't even understand half their languages.Buy it, read it discuss it and then act upon it!Rick McBee

"China's Second Continent" is an extremely well-written and easy to read book. It is a collection of anecdotes and data that comes together to create the complicated and very nuanced story of China's understandable overseas expansion.French's style is pleasing to read. Traveling in different parts of Africa, he conducts interviews with a multitude of interested parties, including government ministers, small-time Chinese traders, prostitutes, heads of state-run Chinese companies, union organizers, and workers for Chinese companies. French never backs away from his own personal thoughts and opinions of the people he meets, which is quite refreshing. Throughout his travels, he keeps a running commentary of his thesis, that China's long-term relationship with Africa extends far beyond quid-pro-qua mineral extraction and is headed towards a relationship whereby African countries will contribute to China's bread basket. French believes that this is a new and different form of imperialism. There are two relationships dealt with in this book: that of individual Chinese entrepreneurs who migrate to Africa, and that of state-run Chinese companies who seem to fly by night in order to build infrastructure in exchange for natural resource or transportation concessions. The entrepreneurs are all colorful characters, well-described by French. The state-run company managers and workers are all tight-lipped, giving the reader the impression that there are nefarious plans at work. While many Africans, Europeans, and Americans complain that China's infrastructure projects in Africa are ramshackle and poor quality, leaving Africans with white elephants that they must manage, they are at least helping to build infrastructure, something the managers and high-level government workers say. Without direct Chinese investment, projects would drag on and never materialize, or only materialize in the form of hard-to-see investments in education, property management, and so forth. Is China's investment, both large and small, in the country helpful? There is no solid conclusion here, but the evidence French presents seems to suggest that because there is no "capacity development" to maintain the large infrastructure contracts, the large, official investment is unhelpful.Beyond the academic and economic conclusions, French is an excellent writer. The chapters in "China's Second Continent" are good-sized chunks that give a good picture of each country he visits, concentrating on the theme of meeting Chinese migrants.

Howard French is an excellent writer. This book is written in a journalistic style and is an easy read on a big geopolitical topic.China’s entry, or return to Africa bears none of its previous anti-colonial pretense. In fact, she enters as a colonialist without the naked display of power that the European colonialists showed. Nonetheless, she is after minerals, food and land. China is there to exploit and her people who are sent out as would be shock troops are traders not benefactors. Africans hope to benefit from the promised “win-win” but in most cases their leaders have sold them out, or have been out-maneuvered by the more business savvy Chinese. The book recounts many instances of this theme through a travelog narrative. Well written and very vivid. Paints a disheartening picture of a new round of exploitation of the African people. Not an optimistic future if trends continue as they are.

I'm Argentinian and for the exception of the chimichurri which real chimi doesn't contain mint nor cilantro, the recipes are pretty good. We are all addicted to empanadas and ice cream !!!

I lived in Argentina for a couple years and my wife got this for me as a gift because I kept talking about the empanadas. This book has great recipes and is well made and designed. We've tried recipes out it and it just takes me back. It's also got great photography and could double as a coffee table book too. Bien hecho Che!

Soul Stories, by Gary Zukav

Amazon.com Review

One of Gary Zukav's many gifts as a speaker and bestselling writer is his ability to present complicated metaphysical and spiritual themes in a way that is simultaneously down-to-earth and spine-tingling. How does he do it? Through story--the oldest and most powerful form of teaching the mind and touching the heart. As a frequent guest on Oprah, Zukav has also discovered that the American public is starved for grounded information on ethereal topics such as intuition, soulful relationships, and nonhuman teachers. Soul Stories is a collection of true tales that speak to themes such as "Reincarnation," "A Higher Form of Reasoning," "Psychic Archaeology," "The New Female," and "Universal Humans." Some stories come from Zukav's personal experience, like his sister's auto accident and his mother instantly knowing that her daughter was hurt even though they were 100 miles apart. It is tempting to view these 52 tales of fate, coincidence, and sixth sense with an air of doubt. "You have to decide," Zukav warns. "That means thinking about it and, even more important, discovering what you feel about it. Eventually, you might find that what you feel about a Soul Story is more important to you than what you think about it." No matter what you feel about the individual tales, you will leave this book trusting that the best way to understand the meaning and mysteries of life is through story. --Gail Hudson

Gary Zukav has mentored me (via writings) since Oprah introduced me to him 20+ years ago in her first "Change Your Life" season. Having read Seat of the Soul a few times before reading Soul Stories, I cannot image how Soul Stories "reads" to a Zukav virgin. In a way it's a Cliff Notes versions of Seat of the Soul. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed its approachable real world stories about profound concepts. It's a delectable desert to the much-to-chew-on Seat of the Soul. Possibly a good way to be introduced to Gary Z. As with all philosophical writings, I digested Soul Stories very slowly - one story every few days - letting each story stand on its own and sink in. Not intended to be a page-turner. I also cherish Seat and Heart of the Soul. But, compared to them, this was FUN to read.

I acquired this set of CDs to listen to while on a long-distance drive. They are very interesting and enjoyable. Zukov teaches moral principles with a series of parables--a long established tool for teaching. The principles he teaches this way are pretty basic, but foundational for us all. For those who feel they're more "advanced", remember that we ALL benefit from review and reminder on the basics. When he got to the subject of men and women that, at times, he came from a more narrow, "traditional" position, which saddened me. This seems to be the one area where he hasn't put away at least some of old fashioned but not necessarily good or helpful attitudes. Otherwise, I must say, this is worth your time. Parents, it will certainly give you additional resources for helping your children understand as well.

I am a long time student on the spiritual path. Every year I select a writer or group of writers as companions to my dally meditation process. In 2013 I spent most of the year with Gary's books. I started by re-reading Seat of the Soul, Heart of the Soul, Mind of the Soul and finishing with Soul Stories.I recommend all of the books and wish any one that chooses to explore his writings blessings on their spiritual path.

What a wonderful gift Gary Zukav has given us! Its simplicity is its brilliance. For those who have read Gary's other book "The Seat of the Soul" and found it to be a little hard to comprehend, "Soul Stories" has taken all of the most complex concepts of that book and just makes them so much easier to understand. If you haven't read the Seat of the Soul yet, this might be a good place for you to start to get a foundation in Zukav's concepts, but the great thing about this book is that it is so readable and yet stands on its own as an explanation of the concepts of the soul and the universe. I want to thank Gary Zukav for his kind words that have meant so much to me, and I have a feeling that he will see this review if he is meant to see it.

I'm into all things spiritual, and love Gary! Love reading about the experiences of everyday people!

zukav has done better. this book is not worth owning, and is not an absolute necessity even if you totally adore gary zukav like i do.

I was recommended this book by my boyfriends aunt and trying to be gracious I took down the name and title. I have to say that I was skeptical about the whole self-help book thing. This is not one of them. It doesn't try to change you. It tells you stories, then lets you decide for yourself whether you will take them to heart or not. I am 25 and my mom just passed away. Not knowing how to cope with the grief I wanted to give this a try. I didn't sit down and read this book in one sitting, I read bits of it and it seemed to weave its way into my life. I strongly recommend this book, whether you are going through hard times or not. I have given it as gifts to people in heartache and they seem to really appreciate it. I re-read it all the time, just to go back through. This book will stay in my collection forever.

I’d been working on my authentic power for a few years and hearing Gary’s explanations gave me the vocabulary to put with all I’d been experiencing. It’s an amazing feeling to know you are finally following your soul! Each day feels purposeful and my life makes sense.

good price quick service timeless wisdom

love it

Excellent read!

Point of Information!!! - this book was oringinally published as 3 essays written by 3 authors. I know this because I was a student of one of them - Richard Dimartino - who was the intermediary between the other 2 authors - Fromm and Suzuki. Credit where credit is due!!! Richard Demartino was an extraodinary professor of religion at Temple University in the 70's and 80's when I knew him. Look him up. He was Suzuki's translater. He also was instrumental in other works by Suzuki and by Hisamatzu.

The essential point of this book is Fromm's opinion that psychoanalysis and Zen Buddhism subscribe to the same aim. For the author, 'The aim of Zen is enlightenment: the immediate, unreflected grasp of reality, without affective contamination and intellectualization, the realization of the relation of myself to the Universe.' For Fromm, this is precisely what psychoanalysis aims to do.I'm not completely convinced of the 1:1 relationship between the two systems of thought and practice. However, I am not an expert in either field. The book is brief and does not include any in-depth discussion of critiques of the ideas Fromm presents. The language of the author is often unnecessarily complex making it difficult to read at times. If you have some knowledge of psychoanalysis or Zen Buddhism, you will probably find this book of interest. It's probably not a good place to start before a basic introduction to each.

Fromm makes an analogy between a patient undergoing therapy with a psychoanalst and a student being trained by a Zen master. But the neurotic patient is not seeking Enlightenment. He is merely trying to get well enough to function. Zen Enlightenment is a kind of super normal consciousness.A better analogy for Zen instruction might be the training a would-be shrink must pass through in a psychoanalytic Institute, which includes undergoing analysis himself under an experienced Freudian certified Master.

Fromm took 3 of 11 papers from an August 1957 workshop in Mexico (expanding his own). Suzuki's paper (76 pp.= 44% of book) was fascinating & profound. He explores differences between East & West exemplified in poetry, attitudes towards silence, etc. His observations were illustrative, but not entirely accurate due to great variations within East & West. His exposition seems to indicate that Japan is more INFP (introverted, intuitive, feeling, & perceptive in Myers-Briggs typology) whereas the West (as others have noted for the U.S.) is more ESTJ (extroverted, sensate=detail oriented, thinking, judgmental). But, this is not true for the French--his case is overstated. Interestingly, some of his examples parallel the West (depending on your definition of West). For example, he says, "Lao-Tse portrays himself as resembling an idiot." The Sufis, however, do also-see Idries Shah's book, "Wisdom of the Idiots." Also, his spiral model matches that of modern Western mystics [also John Suler says "p. 217: "Wachtel (1977) suggested that the therapeutic process is a spiral." & Lama Govinda in his Abidhamma book describes it as well]. He does, however, note Zen similarities to St. Augustine etc. Most importantly, his elucidation of the Unborn, Cosmic Unconscious, or `The true man of no rank' is essentially a metaphysical extrapolation of Jung's Self. Indeed, he is consistent quite with Jung-e.g. p. 25: `To know thyself' is to know thy Self' (of course, Jung wrote an introduction to a Suzuki book!). His description of Zen's view of Self & God is refreshing & enlightening. Also, he says p. 9, `responsibility is logically related to freedom and in logic there is no freedom, for everything is controlled by rigid rules of syllogism. But he does seem anti-machine & perhaps anti-science. Science is not logic-limited as is philosophy, however. I think Suzuki would dislike Madhyamaka philosophy but not General Systems Theory. Some of this (1957) paper is dated--as Fromm points out, making unconscious material conscious does not necessarily cure a patient, & as Boucher, Tsomo, et al have shown, Zen masters moving West have succumbed to temptation. Nonetheless, Suzuki's lengthy but valuable quotations from Rinzai were worth the cost of the book. Despite some dated material, I'd give the chapter 5 stars.Fromm's chapter (65 pp. 38%) was an inconsistent mixture of dazzling insight & maddening oversight. His humanistic psychology would make more sense (& coincide more with Suzuki) if it included Jung's collective unconscious rather than emphasizing repression. Though I agree that p. 91 "Well-being is possible only to the degree to which one has overcome one's narcissism, to the degree to which one is open, responsive, sensitive, awake, empty (in the Zen sense)," he could use some knowledge of the Philosophy of Science & Knowledge Management-but he WAS writing in 1960. The 3 authors have little understanding of science (but this is common even today!): data is non-rational; science is not a function of Aristotelian logic; context is more important than information; only knowledge (not information) is meaningful...They criticize what they do not understand. Fromm seems to think that society drives consciousness (perhaps he's an extrovert?) & falls into the trap of non-awareness/filtering he describes. Yet he quotes Suzuki p. 120 that Zen's method `consists in putting one in a dilemma, out, of which one must contrive to escape not through logic indeed but through a mind of higher order' in other words, a higher Level of Abstraction. I couldn't agree more. He also agrees with Suzuki's spiral model--p. 128 "return to innocence is possible only after one has lost one's innocence." Jack Engler stated "you have to be somebody before you can become nobody" in Molino's "The Couch & the Tree." But, Fromm absurdly states p. 133 "Like all terminological questions, it is not of great importance." Languaging is at the heart of communications problems--translations of ancient works, understanding different cultures, et al. While he has a point that p. 134: "What Bucke describes as cosmic consciousness is, in my opinion, precisely the experience which is called satori in Zen Buddhism," we cannot know how similar they are. We cannot know if, looking at the same blue object at the same time, two people have an identical experience of blue. How same is same? In modern Information Technology, two identical objects are called instances in order to differentiate them. They are identical, but also different. Scientists have address many things (usually from a practical perspective) unbeknownst to psychoanalysts, philosophers, or religionists,.De Martino's short chapter (30 pp. 18%) begins with an interesting observation on what it is to be human--pp. 142-3 "The infant is not yet human; the idiot never quite human; the `wolf-child' only quasi-human; the hopeless psychotic perhaps no longer human...ego consciousness which ordinarily 1st appears between the ages of 2 & 5 in a child born of human parents & reared in a human society." Unfortunately, it quickly degenerates into a negative depiction of ego as subject/object (angst-ridden, melodramatic, & perhaps self-projective). He's anti-transitive (with object); pro intransitive (no object), IMHO disagreeing with the spiral model. How would he react to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) [my Knowledge Management and Information Technology (Know-IT Encyclopedia [...] & modern Object-Relations Theory of psychology? He provides a romanticized, stereotypical & overly philosophical description of Zen IMHO--talking ABOUT rather than OF it--but states: p. 171 "This, in my limited understanding is the relation of Zen Buddhism to the human situation." His point of view focuses on: p. 153 "The intrinsic existential plight of the ego" & concludes that p. 154 "It is not that the ego has a problem, but that the ego is the problem." I think not. IMHO, the ego is a developmental abstraction in the throes of emergence, a new psychological paradigm in a chaotic (though temporary) state of adjustment--the psychological & metaphysical birth pangs of the Zen Unborn, the Dzogchen Ground of Being.
