good price quick service timeless wisdom

love it

Excellent read!

Point of Information!!! - this book was oringinally published as 3 essays written by 3 authors. I know this because I was a student of one of them - Richard Dimartino - who was the intermediary between the other 2 authors - Fromm and Suzuki. Credit where credit is due!!! Richard Demartino was an extraodinary professor of religion at Temple University in the 70's and 80's when I knew him. Look him up. He was Suzuki's translater. He also was instrumental in other works by Suzuki and by Hisamatzu.

The essential point of this book is Fromm's opinion that psychoanalysis and Zen Buddhism subscribe to the same aim. For the author, 'The aim of Zen is enlightenment: the immediate, unreflected grasp of reality, without affective contamination and intellectualization, the realization of the relation of myself to the Universe.' For Fromm, this is precisely what psychoanalysis aims to do.I'm not completely convinced of the 1:1 relationship between the two systems of thought and practice. However, I am not an expert in either field. The book is brief and does not include any in-depth discussion of critiques of the ideas Fromm presents. The language of the author is often unnecessarily complex making it difficult to read at times. If you have some knowledge of psychoanalysis or Zen Buddhism, you will probably find this book of interest. It's probably not a good place to start before a basic introduction to each.

Fromm makes an analogy between a patient undergoing therapy with a psychoanalst and a student being trained by a Zen master. But the neurotic patient is not seeking Enlightenment. He is merely trying to get well enough to function. Zen Enlightenment is a kind of super normal consciousness.A better analogy for Zen instruction might be the training a would-be shrink must pass through in a psychoanalytic Institute, which includes undergoing analysis himself under an experienced Freudian certified Master.

Fromm took 3 of 11 papers from an August 1957 workshop in Mexico (expanding his own). Suzuki's paper (76 pp.= 44% of book) was fascinating & profound. He explores differences between East & West exemplified in poetry, attitudes towards silence, etc. His observations were illustrative, but not entirely accurate due to great variations within East & West. His exposition seems to indicate that Japan is more INFP (introverted, intuitive, feeling, & perceptive in Myers-Briggs typology) whereas the West (as others have noted for the U.S.) is more ESTJ (extroverted, sensate=detail oriented, thinking, judgmental). But, this is not true for the French--his case is overstated. Interestingly, some of his examples parallel the West (depending on your definition of West). For example, he says, "Lao-Tse portrays himself as resembling an idiot." The Sufis, however, do also-see Idries Shah's book, "Wisdom of the Idiots." Also, his spiral model matches that of modern Western mystics [also John Suler says "p. 217: "Wachtel (1977) suggested that the therapeutic process is a spiral." & Lama Govinda in his Abidhamma book describes it as well]. He does, however, note Zen similarities to St. Augustine etc. Most importantly, his elucidation of the Unborn, Cosmic Unconscious, or `The true man of no rank' is essentially a metaphysical extrapolation of Jung's Self. Indeed, he is consistent quite with Jung-e.g. p. 25: `To know thyself' is to know thy Self' (of course, Jung wrote an introduction to a Suzuki book!). His description of Zen's view of Self & God is refreshing & enlightening. Also, he says p. 9, `responsibility is logically related to freedom and in logic there is no freedom, for everything is controlled by rigid rules of syllogism. But he does seem anti-machine & perhaps anti-science. Science is not logic-limited as is philosophy, however. I think Suzuki would dislike Madhyamaka philosophy but not General Systems Theory. Some of this (1957) paper is dated--as Fromm points out, making unconscious material conscious does not necessarily cure a patient, & as Boucher, Tsomo, et al have shown, Zen masters moving West have succumbed to temptation. Nonetheless, Suzuki's lengthy but valuable quotations from Rinzai were worth the cost of the book. Despite some dated material, I'd give the chapter 5 stars.Fromm's chapter (65 pp. 38%) was an inconsistent mixture of dazzling insight & maddening oversight. His humanistic psychology would make more sense (& coincide more with Suzuki) if it included Jung's collective unconscious rather than emphasizing repression. Though I agree that p. 91 "Well-being is possible only to the degree to which one has overcome one's narcissism, to the degree to which one is open, responsive, sensitive, awake, empty (in the Zen sense)," he could use some knowledge of the Philosophy of Science & Knowledge Management-but he WAS writing in 1960. The 3 authors have little understanding of science (but this is common even today!): data is non-rational; science is not a function of Aristotelian logic; context is more important than information; only knowledge (not information) is meaningful...They criticize what they do not understand. Fromm seems to think that society drives consciousness (perhaps he's an extrovert?) & falls into the trap of non-awareness/filtering he describes. Yet he quotes Suzuki p. 120 that Zen's method `consists in putting one in a dilemma, out, of which one must contrive to escape not through logic indeed but through a mind of higher order' in other words, a higher Level of Abstraction. I couldn't agree more. He also agrees with Suzuki's spiral model--p. 128 "return to innocence is possible only after one has lost one's innocence." Jack Engler stated "you have to be somebody before you can become nobody" in Molino's "The Couch & the Tree." But, Fromm absurdly states p. 133 "Like all terminological questions, it is not of great importance." Languaging is at the heart of communications problems--translations of ancient works, understanding different cultures, et al. While he has a point that p. 134: "What Bucke describes as cosmic consciousness is, in my opinion, precisely the experience which is called satori in Zen Buddhism," we cannot know how similar they are. We cannot know if, looking at the same blue object at the same time, two people have an identical experience of blue. How same is same? In modern Information Technology, two identical objects are called instances in order to differentiate them. They are identical, but also different. Scientists have address many things (usually from a practical perspective) unbeknownst to psychoanalysts, philosophers, or religionists,.De Martino's short chapter (30 pp. 18%) begins with an interesting observation on what it is to be human--pp. 142-3 "The infant is not yet human; the idiot never quite human; the `wolf-child' only quasi-human; the hopeless psychotic perhaps no longer human...ego consciousness which ordinarily 1st appears between the ages of 2 & 5 in a child born of human parents & reared in a human society." Unfortunately, it quickly degenerates into a negative depiction of ego as subject/object (angst-ridden, melodramatic, & perhaps self-projective). He's anti-transitive (with object); pro intransitive (no object), IMHO disagreeing with the spiral model. How would he react to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) [my Knowledge Management and Information Technology (Know-IT Encyclopedia [...] & modern Object-Relations Theory of psychology? He provides a romanticized, stereotypical & overly philosophical description of Zen IMHO--talking ABOUT rather than OF it--but states: p. 171 "This, in my limited understanding is the relation of Zen Buddhism to the human situation." His point of view focuses on: p. 153 "The intrinsic existential plight of the ego" & concludes that p. 154 "It is not that the ego has a problem, but that the ego is the problem." I think not. IMHO, the ego is a developmental abstraction in the throes of emergence, a new psychological paradigm in a chaotic (though temporary) state of adjustment--the psychological & metaphysical birth pangs of the Zen Unborn, the Dzogchen Ground of Being.

#46,360 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

He was 31 and married with two small children, living in a small house in London. He had no "job" as such but he had multiple narrative and pedagogical skills. He was French Canadian, a native of New England, a product of its best Universities. He had been a teacher of English with the Peace Corps in Malawi and Uganda for four years and, with other sponsors. for two years in Singapore. He was now (in 1972) a "writer" of sorts and had always loved trains. So in the late summer of that year he set out to cross Asia and back by train - alone. After four months "on the road" - mainly by rail - he returned, rejoined his family and two years later published his first travel book -The Great Railway Bazaar. It was an instant success; and in the ensuing 40 odd years Paul Theroux novelist, teacher, man of letters and social critic has not only become the dean of travel writers with more than 10 books on travel to his credit but an established novelist, essayist and short story writer as well a published author of more than 35 books of non-travel books in his name. I read Bazaar when it was first published and became a Theroux fan on the spot; and since then I have read and cheered every one of its "issue"; but I have never written any comments on Bazaar. However, having just finished his last and perhaps his final travel book (The Last Train From Zona Verde,) I think it's time to say something about Bazaar which I have read again for this purpose. Bazaar starts from London in 1972 with a rail trip to Paris where Theroux boards the "Direct-Orient-Express" which is not to be confused with Agatha Christy's or Alfred Hitchcock's luxury train. There's only one sleeping car for Istanbul via Milan, Venice and Belgrade. And you wouldn't want any of your family to have to travel on it. There's no dining car. You are pretty much on your own for a couple of days, But Istanbul is, as always, engaging. Then it's the "Express" across Turkey to the border of Iran, another "Express" to Teheran, a flight to Peshawar and then the Khyber Pass Local and the Frontier Mail to Mumbai (then Bombay), Indian trains of the mid 1970s too numerous to mention here - Bombay, Simla, New Delhi, Calcutta. A train to Ceylon (before it was Sri Lanka). A flight to Burma (when it was still Burma). Then The Mandalay express. Up country through Vietnam (where the war was still winding down) . A flight to Japan. Tokyo. Kyoto. The fast Japanese trains. And then - by contrast - a voyage ("storm tossed" is the proper phrase for it) to the Eastern Terminus of the Trans Siberian "Express" in the USSR and ten days across Siberia in late December. (Can you imagine ten days on a train in a small compartment with another occupant and never a bath? You really have to love trains!) And, finally, three days after Christmas he's home It was a time when travel in most of the countries he visited was for the hardy and adventurous. There was no internet, no GPS,no email, no iPhone. You used the telegraph system such as it was to communicate with home. Credit cards were generally a thing of the future so you carried your money in a money belt and used bank drafts (when available) for your cash. The modern preventatives or analgesics for Delhi Belly, its children and cousins, were in the future. And personal cleanliness while traveling was obviously a luxury if it could be accommodated at all. Curiously Theroux has never to my memory commented on any of these things. Yes, I have read in some of his books where he has been ill, but we never read of the ordinary vicissitudes of travel -- problems which the rest of us have when we just go to New York. Nor do we nor have we read about his travel plans. Is it all catch-as-catch-can? What was the preparation for the trip? (Obviously there was and had been some preparation because he frequently writes about giving lectures or teaching, and there needs to be some advance work for this.) And where does he find all the books he talks about reading as he goes? They're great books for the time but none that I would expect to find in your corner book store. Now back to Bazaar . As I said I was hooked the first time I read it. And this time it was even better because using Google Earth and Google Maps one can get a pretty good picture of where he is, how he was traveling and what he was seeing. So this is Theroux in his first book, already at the top of his game and a book to spend an evening of two with now in 2013 just as it was when I read in forty years ago. And I guarantee you will like it too

This is a non-fiction story that Mr. Theroux wrote around 1973. He travels by rail from Western Europe all around Asia and writes down his experiences. If you want a day to day travel log and what stuff costs, and recommendations and that sort of thing, look elsewhere. But if you want an engaging story and a look of what the world looked like in 1973 (which I think helps explain where we are today) then this is a great read. Strongly recommended. Also check our Mr. Theroux's similar books, one being "Riding the Iron Rooster-By Train Through China" where he does the same thing this time having taken a year to ride trains throughout China in 1988, just prior to the Tienanmen Square uprising and repression. Again, a fascinating read.

In 1973 Theroux was a struggling novelist barely scraping by in London with wife and kid when he got the idea to take trains across Europe and Asia write a book about it. Good idea. It made his career (that, and his long, fortuitous association with Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul, who served as his mentor and entree in literary London.)Re-reading The Great Railway Bazaar after some 30 years I found that it still intrigued--though I was struck by how sardonic Theroux is throughout. But that sarcasm and wit kept me turning pages--along with his novelist's craft, an eye for anomaly, and a string of eccentric characters he encounters on his route. The book also serves up some time traveling--gone now are Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, the Shah of Iran, Ceylon, and Burma, at least in name. Also affecting was the knowledge, from today's perspective, of the wars and horrors soon to be visited in coming decades on the people he meets across both Europe and Asia.

There is nothing like a good travel book to relax with after the usual stresses of the day, especially for those who might never expect to travel through, e.g., India, Japan, and Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express. The publication date of 1975 takes us back to those years when "hippies" were everywhere, including, as Paul Theroux informs us, on trains in exotic places. His descriptions of these personalities (and many others encountered) give us a picture of hardened, selfish, unrealistic individuals presumably on a spiritual quest. As great as this book is, and as highly recommended as it is, the reader's steadfast traveling companion can only be the author and what he sees and experiences, and Theroux sees through a glass very darkly. Travel experiences in retrospect have what can be identified as their highest and lowest points, highest meaning a moment of realization, a discovery of human goodness and genuine spirituality that brings the potential for a true change in outlook regarding human beings and human conditions. Theroux's books lack these latter nourishing views of life, so that the reader becomes as tired as he does near the merciful end of his months-long journey (with his usual heavy consumption of alcohol) on the Siberian Express, with everything utterly boring, and with time passing painfully slow The account has to be honest about "the way it is," but at one point Theroux is telling all of the insipid travelers he encounters that he is a dentist, in order to avoid engaging them about his lifework, causing one poor fellow to consult him about his decaying teeth. Theroux advises him to seek treatment as soon as possible, and gives him two aspirins. The author may not be able to be called a "misanthrope" in the strict definition of the word, but he comes close. So this is our traveling companion in the otherwise "great railway bazaar," and there is no letup in the way that he sees and experiences life.

THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK YOU NEED TO PLAN THE WILDEST FOXIEST WEDDING OF YOUR DREAMS. First off this book is for anyone wanting to throw a party that represents their love and their style but If you are a wild child, soulful, opinionated, tomboy, low maintenance, type of chic then this book will be your go to wedding bible. I have been overwhelmed about planning my wedding for two years, it just seems like a long term project with lots of food tastings and picking cake (I hate cake) and family stress. I kept saying I want something different, I want to be in the desert and order pizza and have a bonfire for the reception with s’mores and a coffee bar.. I was thinking hipster wedding but every time I thought of that I kept having this *but wait you have to stick to tradition* moment and I would end up back at square one and then I would put my wedding notes away and not look at them again for a few months... I almost was so overwhelmed I was ready to opt out of the whole party altogether but that just didn’t sit right with me, I’m always going to be a hopeless romantic and want to hat moment of looking into my husbands eyes as I walk down the isle to him but then my mind would shift to the wedding and I would shut down. I bought this book by chance as a last result to see if maybe this “Wild at heart” concept might have been me... I’ll tell you this, I STRUCK GOLD with this book. Molly is so honest and raw it’s absolutely refreshing. Something clicked and she spoke to me, she reached my mind, my heart, and my soul. This is not just a book with lists on how to plan your wedding, this is a book filled love, difference, style, grace, diversity, creativity, and independence. It made me feel confident that I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to, and that this day is purely for our love and should be a representation of who we are as a couple. Now here’s the kicker, not only are we talking weddings, we are talking relationships, friendships, fantasizing about what life would be like if you made different decisions, looking back at the good old party days with your besties, the best of music and rock n roll. We are talking motherhood, and emotional rollercoasters of cohabiting with your partner. But the best part was the feeling that I finally found someone who has a similar life to me and she reached through that book and changed me. I’ve never felt more confident in what I want to do with my wedding and even with my marriage. I’ve never felt so safe knowing that not all marriages are sunshine and rainbows and that LOVE TAKES WORKKKKKK. So Girl if you’re feeling overwhelmed, helpless, annoyed and looking for the answers. This is the only book you need. Now for my shout out to the author, MOLLY GIRL THANK YOU! For saving my relationship, my wedding, and my sanity.

Good for inspiration/affirming the diversity of feelings, vision, and approaches we each bring to the table when wedding planning. If you need a book that is a checklist of all the possible things to consider and how to go about obtaining them in very concrete terms (Ie a book to teach you how to plan a wedding), you’ll want to grab a more straight to the point, standard book to supplement such as “A Practical Wedding Planner”. I feel like Stone Fox provides the whimsical, “do what your heart desires even if it’s wacky and “not weddingy” and don’t get talked into doing something else just because “it’s what people do”. It’s affirming to read that there actually are no rules, and it’s great inspiration to read about other weddings that broke the rules and were better for it. I just don’t think you can rely on this as your main book if you’re a libra (like me) and already have ideas but little ability or knowledge to actually carry out ideas into reality. This book broadly covers the aspects of a wedding you’ll want to consider and gives some cool examples of ways people have carries them out in the past, but I needed the Practical Wedding Planner book to get a handle on the logistics of how to actually plan a wedding.

This book felt like 25% basic, useful information for planning a wedding, 15% individualist wedding philosophy, 50% people (including the author) telling stories about their personal style and relationships, and 10% name dropping of celebrities and/or plugging Stone Fox Bride dresses. If you're just starting to plan your wedding and you don't have any idea where to start, or if you need a confidence boost because someone else is trying to dominate your wedding design, then this might be just the book you need to help you figure out what you want. If you've already been planning your wedding or have a firm concept of your own style, you might find that there's not much new for you here.

Molly Rosen Guy is hysterical. The combination of her personal story, insights from other independent + creative brides, and tips + tricks from some amazing professionals in the biz (hello, Anna Sheffield!?!), made this a book I will use well through the wedding process and beyond. The section on wedding dresses made me feel 100% okay with not booking appointments at traditional bridal boutiques and opting for fun days spent at vintage shops instead. The images all throughout are gorgeous. Don't even get me started on the Finding Your Floral Vibe chapter... Equal parts practical and entertaining, I absolutely love this book. I never thought I'd say that about a wedding book. I never thought I'd feel this way about a wedding book. I never thought I'd feel this way about planning a wedding, period. If you're newly engaged and looking for inspiration, this book is everything.

About the only thing that I could suggest as an improvement would be to print the original date that each article was published. That would help to put the subject matter into the context of the times. Most of what Doctor Sowell has written is as valid now as when it was published. The man just makes sense.

If you like facts instead of spin, this is your guy....Liberals will hate this book...They can't call him racist because he is a black man and probably one of the smartest in the country....

I loved these essays which were very pithy. Would recommend them to any one with an open mind about public policies. Ideologues of both the left and right might be disappointed with Mr. Sowell's views, but he presents his views with rigorous analysis.

The saying goes that we like to have people agree with us. Maybe that is why I could not put this book down because Mr. Sowell was saying my exact words-if I could get on a soap box.Not all of course such as the baseball explanations and other topics not known to me before now. There is not one word in this entire volume that does not live and trigger the response,” yes, yes that is so true, so sane, so on target to how things are”. Especially today when we hear so much idiotic talk. Politicians lying like lowlife hoodlums (which many are) and the media distorting the news daily. Mr. Sowell has them all dead to rights and does not pull any punches. Now I have checked to see what else could be lurking in pages he has penned and there is a lot, enough to keep me reading this winter for sure. This is a book every reasoning human creature should read and take it all to heart.

Dr. Sowell is a national treasure. These essays are clear, insightful and go to the heart of many of today's social problems.

Mr. Sowell’s analysis and views are readily understood and always on point. Politics and all else discused by him always portrayed accurately.

Thomas Sowell is a genius. If you really want to learn the finer points in life read his books and follow his interviews & lectures.

This collection of Essays, is great as many are only a couple of pages long. This book has helped my clarify my possession on many issues that, I had a hard time verbalizing.Thomas Sowell, is one of my favorite "Think Tanks" of today. His sound logic, and way of presenting it is music to my ears in this day where Nonsense has replaced Common Sense!Unfortunately Thomas Sowell will only get the recognition he deserves after his life time, as we have seen in the past of many great thinkers.

This is one of my all time favourite novels, rife with beautiful writing, rich characters, excellent description, thoughtful, poignant, at times nostalgic, at times hopefull, but Amazon's words are so lacking here.. It is one of those hard to describe types of novels that defies a simple categorization, and I hate to call it a mystery because while there is one, it is NOT a "mystery novel." They writing is poignant, there is a wonderfully written back story interposed, moral dilemmas, and of course a man is on trial for murder.Set in the 1950s, the flashbacks go to the 1930s and 1940s, both before and during WW II. We see how WW II threw this community with both European and Japanese Americans into a tailspin and with unresolved conflict and issues still simmering under the surface. Ishmael, the protagonist and not on trial, is a one-armed vet who is the town reporter, is one of those with those unresolved issues in his life. I have read this novel more than once from the library, but finally realized I want to own my own copy, and not just buy it as a gift for someone else.

I read SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS when it was first published years ago and it left such a positive impression that I decided to re-read it recently. This is one of my favorite books of all time and the second time around was just as spellbinding, emotional and gripping as the first. While I discovered more details with my recent reading than I remembered, the overall experience was just as powerful. I've recommended it to numerous people who have also been impressed with the quality of writing and the powerful and emotional impact of this novel. I happen to know quite a bit about gill net fishing and about Puget Sound so felt immersed in this setting. CEDARS creates a palpable "feeling"... not just words...haunting and ethereal at the same time...I was inside the cedar tree with Hatsue and Ishmael, on the boats and at Manzanar. The author is truly a master with words and his novel is a master of literature. I probably will read it again and again.

I watched the movie on a rainy day and decided to buy the book. The book gives a great deal of insight into the tragic time for the Japanese community in USA. It is suspenseful and very well written but it is not a huge mystery. The author recreates the wartime hysteria that led to Japanese-Americans being sent to concentration camps. The book is more than a story of one man's guilt or innocence; it is a story of a community's fear and prejudice against the Japanese Americans and brings to mind the current prejudice against people of Islamic faith. The story stays with you but it is not a book that I can't put down.

The opening scene in riveting: a small-town courtroom on an island in the upper end of Puget Sound on a snowy day. Having lived in Seattle for a few years, I can really say that his description of the residents of the island, and the geography itself (sounds like Whidbey Island to me) is excellent. Guterson's descriptions of the salmon-fishing, strawberry-growing culture, their houses, boats, and perspectives are wonderfully refreshing. Set in the 50's, it shows the honest simplicity of life in that era, yet gets into the complexity of the personalities and feelings of the main characters. Guterson displays the interactions of the local people as though he might have been one of them. Their social transactions are complex, although properly muted in 50's fashion so there is not a lot of dirty wash hanging out in public. If you like Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion stories from Lake Wobegon, you will probably do well with this book. The alleged murder of fisherman Karl Heine by Japanese fisherman Kabuo Miyamoto kicks off a fury of irrational anger at the otherwise exemplar Japanese population. Having been born in 1945, it reminds me vividly of the comments and prejudices I heard about the Japanese way back in South Dakota where most people had never met such a human -- except on the battlefield. The teenage romance between Ishmael (later the island's sole newspaper editor) and Hatsue Imada (who would finally marry Kabuo) is touching and heart-wrenching, although their conversation and insights into their situation might be a bit too high-level for their time and maturity. It is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet set in Puget Sound. The sudden hysteria and hatred that boils over when Heine is found dead and Kabuo is accused, jailed and charged based on very circumstantial evidence shows how fine the line is between acceptance, toleration and total condemnation when ethnic groups live together in close proximity. Guterson uses flashbacks to develop the main characters very fully to the point where you think you might be living next door to them by the end of the novel. The murder mystery aspect of this story is only a vehicle for a deep exploration into the heart and soul of humans, as individuals and groups. The ending is predictable and uplifting, but left me with the feeling that the island had a lot of work to do to get back to normal -- years of atonement and reconciliation. This story is a good read for those who allow themselves to be swept away into a beautifully told, tragic story. Real men do not cry when reading storybooks, but I strangely noticed some tears on my cheeks every now and then. This is not a formula-based murder mystery. It is a story that can stick with you and make you look at yourself as though you might have been one of the islanders.

Oh, I don't know. There's a lot to like here. The trial is compelling. The story unravels nicely through the various characters' histories. I love the irony that those of German descent get free passes while the Japanese get packed off to camps; I guess the Germans never attacked U.S. soil though.I had a tough time swallowing the early teen lives of Ishmael and Hatsue. She's meditating on rock ledges in the woods with her perfect hair cascading over her shoulders while he's smitten in his room filled with collecting cards and model airplanes. It's a bit much, isn't it? There's nothing equivocal in the mawkish innocence other than the xenophobia underlying Hatsue's hesitation. And when it's all shattered by the war, it seems contrived.I have a lot of time for honest looks at America's incarceration of its Japanese citizens during World War II. And I think Guterson's trial rings true. Furthermore, I think in real life Ishmael probably makes the same decision. However, the story that positions Ishmael to actually make that decision, and so...uggh...meaningfully, tends toward melodrama at times.

The Duck Commander Devotional INTRODUCTION THE WORD OF God has been a constant in the Robertson home since Dad became a Christian almost forty years ago. Whether we were discussing and debating at the dinner table, teaching in a small-group setting, or sharing with someone who doesn’t know the Lord, the Bible has been very near and dear to our family. Like every family, we get busy with life and need regular reminders to read, meditate on God’s Word, and apply it to our daily lives. Because our family understands this need, we wanted to write a daily devotional book to help guide others to the life-changing power found in Scripture. Dad’s parents, Granny and Pa, helped us buy our home place on the river and lived next door to us when Dad became a Christian. They were retiring and wanted to fish, hunt, grow gardens, and be close to family in their later years. They also had a divine appointment to teach our family a lot of scripture. God knew that our family needed them nearby to help guide our young family in our Christian walk. They were totally committed to studying the Bible and shared so much of what they discovered with our whole family. Forty years ago, our two homes on the Ouachita River were guided by the Scripture, and that foundation has now grown to seven homes, with many more on the horizon as the Robertson family continues to grow. This book is really dedicated to Granny and Pa and the legacy they continue to grow in us concerning our love for the Bible. We are all very excited about sharing some of our favorite passages and why they are special to us. You’ll find that some of the chosen passages are repeated by other family members—that’s because some of the same passages have significantly impacted different people in our family. If you have watched our television show, you know how much we like to talk and expound on things, and this devotional book is no different. You will find some lengthy passages that don’t need a lot said about them because there isn’t much to add to the power that God has instilled. You’ll also find other passages that spark a memory from our past, a challenge for our present, or a hope for our future. It is our prayer that those sentiments will bless your day and your spiritual walk. We encourage you to read through the passage, message, and prayer more than once during the day and allow God’s Word to bless you and guide you in your daily walk with Him. We also challenge you to change whatever needs to be changed in your life to act in line with the truth of God’s Word. God says that his Word is active and sharp and was written to impact, shape, and transform lives and lifestyles. If ever there was a time in our world that we needed to be guided by the principles of the Bible, it is now. So many people in the world are struggling for answers to their life issues, and the best guide and most absolute truth available is still the Holy Bible. We invite you to spend a year with our family. As we walk through passages from God’s holy words of truth and light, you will be blessed by the journey.

This devotional is a very easy read...and does not go very deep into spiritual thinking. The daily lessons are straight-to-the-point and clear. Each devotion can be completed in less than one minute. I am a duck hunter...so the connection is obvious for me. If you just want a simple daily spiritual idea...this is the book for you.

It was an okay devotional. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it were the only one I was using. but the constant comparisons to what else I was learning each day weren't helpful. I might give this another shot at another time, but it probably won't be one I return to with any regularity.

I love this book. I actually have bought this book and gifted it and then replaced it three times. The devotionals are written in such a simpiistic style that even a child could understand them. I love the Robertson family, and find their devotion to spreading the Love of God to be one of the most inspirational forces on this earth. Thank you, Al, for a wonderful book. My family likes the fact that it is written in a style which makes it reusable from year to year. It is now on its third repetition in my home. God bless you and your ministry of service to Him.This book was a personal purchase and was not given to me as review.

I ordered myself this devotional because I so admire the Robertson family and others on Duck Dynasty. I have two grandsons that are avid hunters so I decided to order one for each of them. They were so happy to receive these devotionals and both said they couldn't wait for January 1 to start them. I felt the same way. I started with this devotional on 1/1/14 and can honestly say it is one of the best devotional books I have ever owned, and I've owned plenty over the years. It has blessed me each day and brought me closer to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you Duck Dynasty for writing this awesome devotional. I will use it each day for years. I highly recommend this devotional to anyone who wants a blessing each day! It is wonderful!!!

I was surprised by the genuine reflections given by Duck Commander family members. The prologue was also very interesting with the short bio of everyone in the family. It is easy to see that this family is devoted to their walk with Jesus. I love forward to daily reading the scripture and the devotions by the Duck Commander family.

My husband loves this. Our pastor handed them out during a men's retreat. He didn't have one left for himself so we got him one used. My husband is dyslexic and doesn't like to read because it hurts his eyes and head. He enjoys this so much he reads it anyway. He sometimes reads a day aloud to me. This devotional has a lot of meat. It has sparked heart felt discussions between my husband and I which have made us closer.

I have been reading this through this year. The devotional are by various members of the family and is inspiring on how the Word and the blessings have soaked their lives through thick and thin. I have enjoyed it and have learned (almost before I reach the end and see the name) who wrote it. It is good daily uplift!
