The Turkey Girl: A Zuni Cinderella Story, by Penny Pollock

From Publishers Weekly

In this sobering Native American variation of the Cinderella story, the focus is not on finding true love but on remaining true to one's promises. To repay the kindness of the poor orphan girl who tends them, the tribe's turkeys dress her in a fine doeskin robe so she can attend the Dance of the Sacred Bird. So enthralled is she with the dancing that she breaks her promise to return to the turkeys before dawn and consequently loses her friends forever. Pollock frequently interrupts the narrative with references to Zuni clothing and dwellings-the girl's yucca sandals, her "turquoise necklaces and earrings of delicate beauty." In contrast, Young's (Lon Po Po) characteristically abstract illustrations evoke the sunlight and heat of the pueblo villages with few visual clues about the story itself. Except for the heroine's beautiful face, the characters and setting are hazy shadows, often appearing simply as dark silhouettes. The reader never sees the celebrated gown, which is shrouded in a mantle; the dancers at the festival are barely visible smudges seen through the pueblo's doorways. Like the music of story hour radio shows, these illustrations set a mood, forcing the reader to fill in the visual details. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3?In this version of the Cinderella story, a poor outcast Zuni girl who tends turkeys longs to attend the Dance of the Sacred Bird. Observing her suffering, the turkeys outfit her in a white doeskin dress adorned with rare shells, as well as turquoise necklaces and earrings, and silver bracelets. To prove that she remembers them, she promises to return from the dance "before Sun-Father returns to his sacred place." As in other retellings, she does not keep her word. At this point, the story diverges greatly from the version with which most American children will be familiar: when she finally returns home, the turkeys have abandoned her forever. As an author's note points out, the story symbolically reinforces the moral that "when we break our trust with Mother Earth, we pay a price." Pollock explains that she found this story in a collection of Zuni folktales collected by Frank Hamilton Cushing, but does not provide the source. Young's spare oil crayon and pastel illustrations contain almost elemental forms that sometimes merely suggest the objects they depict. The artist makes the most of the desert's dramatic lighting, creating shadowy backgrounds that draw attention to the story's spiritual underpinnings. While his palette jumps wildly from pale shades to the most vibrant pinks, blues, and golds of a vivid desert sunset, the illustrations do not detract from Pollock's thoughtful retelling, which itself gracefully captures the Zuni landscape. Unfortunately, many pages are difficult to read due to a lack of contrast between the illustrations and the words placed on top of them.?Ellen Fader, Multnomah County Library, Portland, ORCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

In this Cinderella Story, there are permanent consequences for not keeping your word. It is a little harsh to read to young children, but as a study of the "Cinderella Story" from various cultures, it is beautifully told and the Native American version that emphasizes the connection between mankind and nature is thought-provoking. This is a treasure for my collection and the book I received is a first edition.

While the book was in perfect condition, I am confused about the story. In a synopsis of the story, the Turkey Girl was named "Liseli", however the name, "Liseli", was never mentioned. Does anyone know where I can find that version of "The Turkey Girl"?

Great story we use with our "in search of Cinderella " unit

The book arrived in good time and was in great condition. I will be using this for a Fairy Tale Unit in my classroom.

love it!

lOVE IT!

Not everyone knows this, but authors don't always have control over the artists that illustrate their books. Sometimes a well-established author will be paired with an up-and-coming illustrator, and sometimes it's the other way around. In an ideal situation, the text and the art compliment one another flawlessly, making it so that the reader finds it impossible to imagine any other pairing for that particular book. If I had been Penny Pollock, I would have been initially overjoyed to learn that Ed Young had been selected to illustrate my work. After all, Mr. Young is a winner of the prestigious Caldecott Medal. His books include the beyond beautiful "Lon Po Po" as well as the technically adept and gorgeous "Seven Blind Mice". Which makes it all the more painful that Ed essentially slept through the making of "The Turkey Girl". While the book has a rather interesting and remarkable story, Young's illustrations look slapdash and amateurish. This is a book that has been ruined by its pictures. Worse still, it's been ruined by a formerly very talent artist. This Zuni tale is a kind of Cinderella story with a dour ending. It tells the simple tale of a girl who lived in her village and was very poor. Her only means of sustenance came from tending the turkeys of the rich, thereby earning her the moniker, Turkey Girl. One day the Turkey Girl overhears that there is to be a fabulous harvest dance that everyone may attend. The Turkey Girl understands that she hasn't the clothes or appearance for such an event, so she contents herself by telling her woes to her only friends, the turkeys. To her amazement, however, the turkeys respond by talking to her. Not the dumb birds we have taken them for, the turkeys present their mistress with a beautiful dress and jewelry for the dance. They insist, however, that she return to them that night before the sun sets. If she does not, they will fly far away and never return. The Turkey Girl promises and goes off to join the dance. She's a hit, but as the afternoon turns to evening she keeps putting off her return to the turkeys. Finally she tears herself away, only to find that they've all gone and that her dress has been returned to rags. As Pollack says in her Author's Note, this book (like some other Native American versions) ends with, "the hard truth that when we break our trust with Mother Earth, we pay a price".Though it's a little depressing in the end, I liked what this tale had to say. The author has an excellent voice, and the scenes are beautifully presented through her narration. Then we get to the pictures. At first, I was captivated by Young's style. Using pastel and oil crayon, Young works with colors that are native to the American Southwest (where this tale takes place). Though a little fuzzy at first, I was more than willing to give Young the benefit of the doubt. The fuzzy image of the Turkey Girl leading her charges out of the pueblo village looks as if we are viewing the scene through the wavy lines of heat you get on especially bright sunny days. But as the book continued I realized that this style of drawing, while lovely, was completely misplaced here. Though the action in the text becomes interesting and intense, the illustrations are static and without any detail at all. In the section where the Turkey Girl goes to a spring and hears the other girls gossip (soon followed by the announcement of the dance), the picture shows a fuzzy white image of a girl perched on top of (why?) a pueblo as similarly fuzzy images walk away with pots of water on their heads. The scene where the Turkey Girl receives a beautifully described dress of, "white doeskin...belted with red-and-yellow cloth", is accompanied by a shot of two or three somewhat grotesque turkeys taking up 1.25 pages. Worst of all is the dance. The closest we get to seeing ANYTHING at all is a washed out watery shot of eight or so legs that are, for all intents and purposes, not moving. How hard would it have been for Young to infuse a little life into these pictures? Or even, heaven forbid, a little detail. The illustrator seems to be under the impression that to show any intricacies would be to betray the story itself. If so, allow me to assure you Mr. Young that we would have been GLAD to read a book where in the event that a character does something...you see it! Instead, a section that says that, "The Turkey Girl danced every dance, her heart beating in time with her stomping feet", is accompanied by a lazy-hazy view of slightly turkey-shaped clouds against a peach background. If I have no patience for this, then I can guarantee that a five year old being read this story is definitely not going to have any patience with it either.Which is a real pity. Though Pollock's tale is a bit dark and sad at the end (not only is the Turkey Girl tawdry once more but she's also out of a job) it could easily have worked beautifully with some well placed illustrations. I just can't understand how Ed Young screwed this up. Maybe he was really busy the month he was supposed to be drawing this. Perhaps it didn't pique his interest. Whatever the reason, this book looks like nothing so much as some rudimentary studies of Zuni color schemes hastily scrawled onto a series of pages. If you'd like an adept and haunting Native American picture book fable, allow me to recommend, Rafe Martin's "The Rough-Face Girl". An Algonquin (rather than Zuni) Cinderella tale, that book has the life and energy that this book lacks. All I can say is that I feel very badly for Penny Pollock. I hope that in the future she's given an illustrator that spends a little more time and energy on the final product. For as much as I admire Ed Young, I cannot understand how he allowed himself to produce such a drab creation. I guess it just happens to the best of us sometimes. Maybe.

Many professional and lay people have given this a positive review, but my study of the book reveals it strays significantly from the way the Zuni people tell this story. While it may be poetic and well written to an uninformed eye, it fails miserably to convey the values and concepts within Zuni culture. As such, it cannot be used in a unit that teaches children about Zuni people.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, by Amy Chua

From Publishers Weekly

Chua (Day of Empire) imparts the secret behind the stereotypical Asian child's phenomenal success: the Chinese mother. Chua promotes what has traditionally worked very well in raising children: strict, Old World, uncompromising values--and the parents don't have to be Chinese. What they are, however, are different from what she sees as indulgent and permissive Western parents: stressing academic performance above all, never accepting a mediocre grade, insisting on drilling and practice, and instilling respect for authority. Chua and her Jewish husband (both are professors at Yale Law) raised two girls, and her account of their formative years achieving amazing success in school and music performance proves both a model and a cautionary tale. Sophia, the eldest, was dutiful and diligent, leapfrogging over her peers in academics and as a Suzuki piano student; Lulu was also gifted, but defiant, who excelled at the violin but eventually balked at her mother's pushing. Chua's efforts "not to raise a soft, entitled child" will strike American readers as a little scary--removing her children from school for extra practice, public shaming and insults, equating Western parenting with failure--but the results, she claims somewhat glibly in this frank, unapologetic report card, "were hard to quarrel with." From Bookmarks Magazine

Most critics agreed that Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is an entertaining read—lively and humorous, written with the intent to shock. More controversial is Chua’s stereotyping of Chinese and Western cultures, not to mention her authoritarian parenting methods. Critics judged the book largely by asking the following questions: Should self-esteem come before accomplishment, or accomplishment before self-esteem? If the latter, should it be achieved by threats and constant monitoring? Chua’s teenage daughters are undeniably accomplished, but at what emotional cost? While some reviewers found that Chua’s technique borders on abuse and her writing was, at best, self-serving, others were impressed by her parenting results and opined that the West could learn a few things from this remarkably driven Chinese American mother.

As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

I'm a Japanese American mom of two children. I really enjoyed her book! I read the negative reviews and wonder if those people really read her book. Numerous times the author states about her self doubt on how she was raising her daughters and how she questioned her methods.I'm one of those parents that has always praised my children in whatever they do and I didn't want to criticize them for fear of hurting their feelings or ruining their self esteem but Mrs Chua's book helped me to realize that is okay to sometimes demand excellence from your children! And that sometimes they need to be called out when they are not trying their best. Do I think the author is the perfect parent? Of course not, no one has all the answers but we can still learn from each other.

This book plays into every asian stereotype. The author was clearly a spoiled brat who thought she had a strict childhood. Chua’s assumptions are way off on certain theories she has.

This is an interesting, if skewed perspective, on high performance parenting. Admittedly, most children, if left to their own devices, would prefer becoming entitled couch potatoes, however, helicopter parenting is no guarantee of a child future success. Tiger parenting may work in a culture that provides a comparable context for all members of a child's social network, such as the far east, but social outlets in the United States diffuse impact by providing incongruous frames of perspective. It is likely that an intelligent child will engage with peers, to compare filial obligations, and grow to resent Tiger parenting. Hard work and a good education indeed improve the probability that a child will enjoy a higher income than the average American, however, the marginal improvement is not tantamount to success if hard work and more education do not improve the child's quality of life, self-concept, and life satisfaction. In essence, know thy children before imposing tiger parenting upon them.

I bought this book on the recommendation from a friend and after reading a few chapters, and I already had enough.I cannot get pass this woman's own complexes which were brought on by hre Chinese parentage. She studied only what she thought would please her parents, majors which require route memorization and gurantee excellent grades if you study hard enough. She failed in the corporate world and thinking that she is as gifted and adequate for the same job her husband, fails miserably at the interview realizing that she cannot hold her as high of a level of conversation as her husband's colleagues. Then, having failed to achieve as high success as she thought that she would, she decides to write about her experience parenting her kids, the Chinese style way. After of course, in overachieving Chinese student fashion, admitting that others have beat her to writing about Chinese culture, such as Amy Tang. Her descriptions of family's journey and parenting style are interesting. It seems to me that her and another extremely-scucessfull Chinese-American parents can owe their success to the laziness and brivery of American parenting. Contrasting what she considers such parenting success. This is the norm in Asia.If you like to read books to analyze people's personal inefficacies and psychological shortcomings, then buy this book. If you want to read a real talented writer's book, then spend your money on books like the Joy Luck Club instead.

"Having counseled such sports stars as LeBron James and PGA great Hal Sutton, sports psychologist Rotella extends his sports-centric guidance to those seeking to enhance their everyday acumen through the power of focused positive thinking….A solid motivational text for the sports-minded and thoseinterested in the bridging of athletics and exceptionalism.” —Kirkus Reviews“Intriguing and persuasive….Though Rotella’s primary concern here is with the very successful, “ordinary” people should also find useful tips here for smoothly handling life’s challenges and opportunities.” —Publishers Weekly“The author is, unquestionably, the premier mental coach for golf, having worked with Darren Clarke and Keegan Bradley as well as athletes in other sports, along with business executives…What makes golf an interesting metaphor is that even the truly luminary succeed, but only a fraction of the time. Dr. Rotella, through his years of experience with exceptional people, has been able to clearly identify specific characteristics that cause that exceptionality to express. He furthers the idea that "talent" in the conventional sense isn't an inherent gift, and that it is much more the working habits and attitudes of exceptional people that sets them apart. Being exceptional can be taught and learned. He also points out that the cost of exceptionality may not be a price that everyone wants to pay. Dr. Rotella's book is one-of-a-kind and is required reading for those who deal with (or are) standouts in any field.

I was reading this book on a flight to San Francisco & was confused when another passenger handed me some tissue? Only then did I realize tears were streaming uncontrollably down my face. No book has ever caused me to shed a tear, but somehow Rotella had struck a chord that left me publicly sobbing on an airplane of all places! I felt Rotella had written a story of my own life and it was being presented back to me in a way I could understand. Rotella encourages us all to seek our God given abilities / gifts, explore them, and exploit them to their highest levels! For the individual that does not realize their talents, this read may be difficult to comprehend. However, for the individual that understands God has blessed them with something special, in whatever area(s) of life, this book is a must read!!!!! Best book I've read to date!

Not as good as Rob's previous book "The 15th Club". This one is more for Golf Pros, not amateurs or golfers that play for fun and bit of healthy competition. Some points good but overall not a book you would want to read again. The 15th Club is much much better- something that every golfer can relate to.

Rotella is not a "sports psychologist." He was a college teacher and worked with Davis Love and a few others in the 80's. Made his reputation on them and wrote a few books. Very simplistic viewpoints on performance.

Anything Bob Rotella writes becomes a masterpiece of art. And this book is no different. They way he breaks down the mind of athletes really intrigues me. And to be able to transfer those though processes over to mine has been a great learning curve. This book is strongly recommended.

As a fan of both golf and self help, this book is an interesting and useful read. There are so many interesting stories about professional athletes and the way the author ties in the self help concepts, its good stuff. Although the book probably could have been 25% shorter, it keeps you interested in the concepts.

Bought this for my football coaching husband and he absolutely loves it. Can't put it down. Sometimes I catch him shaking his head up and down in agreement with what's written. Suggested for anyone who wants a lesson on the mind of very successful people.

Quite inspirational, filled with anecdotes and examples of pros who dedicated themselves to achieving supreme success. A must have if you plan to win. Re-read it to keep your goals fresh.

#298,921 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I purchased three books on foraging for my son's 18th birthday 3 months ago, and this is by far his favorite. He's an avid outdoorsman already and this is the book he keeps in his backpack. He's taken many foraging hikes (2 a week at least) and tried all kinds of wild edible plants. I went with him last week and tried miner's lettuce and a couple other plants. I looked through his book to make sure I wasn't going to eat something poisonous by mistake. I like that it lets you know if there are NO toxic plants you could possibly mix it up (like miner's lettuce). If there is an edible plant that looks similar to a poisonous one it will show you how to definitively identify which it is or recommend not eating it. There are also recipes included and he's tried several. Its a great book and I plan to buy him a couple more from this publisher for other regions. Oh yeah, he's also made soap with some plants that he read about here... Very happy with this purchase.

So many foraging books have so many problems, but Nyerges has really hit the right balance with this book. Good, clear color photos and identification descriptions. Just the right number of plants--too many books are so all-inclusive that you can't pick out the plants you might actually find and use from those that are rare finds and not all that useful. Others have almost nothing in them. His information is accurate, and he wisely includes cautions on plants. (though there was, problematically, no such warning for mustard)I was sorry to see him leave out a couple of important foraging plants such as artichoke thistle (good idea to get those out of the wild environment by foraging them) and the sages. And be aware that this is not a book of useful plants, just edible plants. Thus, plants with medicinal (eg. horehound) and other practical uses are not included. That's fine. This is an excellent foraging guide overall, and as I said, a big improvement over anything we've had up to now.By the way, I have no relationship with the author and don't know him. This is just a review from a fairly savvy forager.

Weighing this against the mushroom identification books that I own, this book comes up strong in some places, but weak overall.Pros: the photographs are large and in color, providing detail when called for; the information given is helpful and obviously from experience; there are numerous features throughout that are helpful, such as the ruler on the back and the grouping of species according to locale in the beginning.Cons: at this price, the book is thin on content; I have paid a similar amount for books with almost 4x as much content (albeit without the beautiful photographs) (see "Mushrooms Demystified" by David Arora). Although this book is meant to focus solely on edible plants, as a previous reviewer had mentioned, it doesn't even cover these comprehensively. Quite frankly, at this price it should be more comprehensive--including some notable medicinal plants would have been nice, and perhaps some poisonous ones to look out for in the field or at least for comparison to look-alikes.This book could also use a branching tree identifier for those unfamiliar with the plant families; when I'm hiking on a hot day, I'm hardly thinking in terms of "eudicot or dicot?". In the absence of such an identification system, it would have been better to organize it differently--by biome or type of food rendered ("berries," "starches," "herbs," etc.).When you compare it to other plant identification books, it appears that this one is among the best. But in my opinion, there is a lot of room for someone to come out with a comprehensive "useful plants" book, because even the best available is lacking.

I thought this was a great book that's of sturdy construction, nice photographs, and useful text. It has details in the plant descriptions that only come from someone who really knows the plants and has used them. I was delighted to find a plant in the book that I previously had considered a noxious weed (Malva Neglecta) on my little piece of land. This plant is so vigorous that it had even survived my scorched earth policy against it. I tried the leaves, stems, and seed pods and they actually tasted really good. What I once scorned and tried to destroy, now adorns my salads. This is a great book for beginners and intermediate. Experts don't need a book like this.

Incredible. I swear, I live in the desert and had NO idea how many edible and beneficial plants surrounded me. This book is EXCELLENT, and a favorite to take with me on hikes. Lots of listings, and lots of useful information on each. If you're curious about nature, into survival, or just wondering what that weed is in your garden (amazingly, you'll likely find it in this book and who knows, maybe be able to eat it), this book will entertain and inform. It's the best single source of information I've seen on edible plants in California.

Plan to use this book on our hikes1. Great pictures (in color)2. Love the information provided for each plant3. Size is perfect to carry along on our walks & hikes

Thanks to this book, I've identified many of the unknown "weeds" growing in my yard and neighborhood. Even better, I've learned that they're edible! I'm excited to harvest and eat them.Nice glossy color photographs and descriptions. Easy to compare plant photos in the book to the real thing.

This book has useful information, but seems to be written by someone who thinks everyone has had two semesters of college botany. It's approximately 240 pages long and in the first 35 pages I came across the following terms without definition: Chaparral, Riparian Areas, Rhizomes, and Twice Pinnately Divided. I spent more time looking terms up on Wikipedia than I did reading this book. Also, as a beginner, I would like to see more close-up photos of the plants in order to help in identifying them. I'll keep this book and try to 'grow into it'.

Review

'Oppenheimer does not shy away from difficult concepts, and as part of a more modern treatment of magma vesiculation (bubble formation) he presents a skilful precis of Yuri Siezin's catastrophe theory model, whereby a slight change in the pressure driving up a conduit can trigger an enormouschange in magma ascent velocity.' Times Higher Education Supplement, April 2004.`Review from previous edition 'the work is organized around the styles of volcanism found on the earth ... the lay reader is skilfully guided around or over the technical hurdles without the storyline being lost and perseverance, when it is needed, is rewarded by many fascinating details aboutparticular eruptions ... the thoroughness and range of the coverage in the text make this an excellent adjunct to the reading list for even a postgraduate course in volcanology ... Francis has succeeded in producing an extremely readable, entertaining, authoritative and informative work that shouldbring a better appreciation of modern volcanology to a wide audience.''L. Wilson, Nature August, 07/09/1993`'the lay readers is skilfully guided around or over the technical hurdles without the storyline being lost; and perseverance, when it is needed, is rewarded by many fascinating details about particular eruptions ... the thoroughness and range of the coverage in the text make this an excellentadjunct to the reading list for even a postgraduate course in volcanology ... His lucid style and individual ... voice entices committed and casual readers alike. This is the book for all those who have wondered why and how volcanoes erupt as they do, and are prepared to think a little to find out ...what makes this text so compelling is the sense of contact with research. Times Higher Education Supplement`'This is above all a very readable account of one of the Earth's fundamental geological processes and as such will appeal equally to students of geology and geography, nonspecialists, and the general reader. I have a copy of Francis' original edition and am using this one updated by Oppenheimer for a course text. However it is also useful and very readable for any scientifically literate person interested in volcanoes.

My interest is in Geology., this book covers much Geology as well as Historical influence of VolcanosBeautifully written in an engaging prose styleREB, MD

This book breaks down the mechanics of volcanoes so that anyone with a good understanding of basic geology concepts can understand what is going on. Well written and easy to read.

The book is pretty much as advertised. It is much deeper than the my previous Discovery Channel knowledge, but it's not a full text book that requires prior knowledge. In short, it's a great start into the topic. One of the best parts of the book is that it concludes every chapter by discussion example volcanoes/eruptions to illustrate the topic of the chapter. However, while the book already has many diagrams and pictures, especially the example discussions could be significantly improved with more overview diagrams, aerial photographs and pictures of rocks/deposits/etc.I still do have a few issues with the book. In places it uses a lot of terminology from petrology that is not introduced in the book. While it is probably not necessary to understand the subtle differences between different types of rocks, it might be easier to read if these technical sections would be made simpler. It's still a great book if you are curious about volcanoes.

amazing

If you like geology or earth science you will find this book very interesting. The language is easy to understand, even if you are not a scientist. Geology Rocks!!!

I use this book in volcanology class... required for my studies... but i keep running into price problems... two of my professors use this book... but i dont care one way or another...

The book arrived a little over a month after it was ordered internationally, which was well before the expected time. The book arrived in very good quality with a muchly appreciated assurance from Bellweather Books if this product was defected.

Even for someone who does not know any Sanskrit, this book is a pleasure. Just read the English translation. It gives such wonderful descriptions, written in ancient times. Like the description of a forest ashram in the opening chapter.I got this book as a way to improve my Sanskrit by reading a great story. By having the English translation right on the facing page, I don't have to look up words, which is a real time saver! There are 5 books published by Clay Library for the Ramayana. I started with this one, Book 3, because Rama's time in the forest is my favorite. He has left his old life and is transformed in the course of his forest sojourn.

Wonderful book, superb translation, amazing story! I just have a curiosity about the deleted section, as this is an abridged version.

This book is one of the classics from Rajaji. It is written in simple English and is a very good read particularly for kids

One of the best

ok

I Love Indian ancient stories, they inspire even today’s most creative authors with their imagination. Easy to read and follow.

Like the other volumes in this series this volume also gives the original Sanskrit text of Aranya-kanda in Roman script, a very helpful feature. Excellent price, excellent publication.

I bought it for my 9 yrs old kid and he really loved it. This is a very nice and concise book.
