Nice book.

Fun book

Very good resource!

It is a good book on the period styles. Not so good on the practical side of restoration. Arrived in good condition.

Although this is a mainly a design book for the Victorian home owner, and a good one, with several excellent pictures on every page, it is also a history book. The author explains how each new wallpaper style, or window treatment, or ceiling ornament, and so on, is a consequence of this Paris Exhibition, or that widely circulated pattern book, or the writings of this influential person.And considerable research and effort went into the book. In addition to the pictures, which cover subjects in Britain, America, and occasionally Australia, there are cutaway drawings showing construction of masonry and wood houses, and, at the close of every chapter, a page or two of drawings to illustrate typical ballusters, wall lamps, wardrobes, etc.It was written for an American audience, going by the spellings and the list of suppliers in the appendix, by an Englishman, who occasionally gets things wrong. Like saying that at the turn of the century porches fell out of favor here and were replaced by conservatories. But his advice on restoration is always good.Although it's an engaging history of the era, it's not a how-to book. The final chapter on repairs is familair material, although it might contain something you've not seen before: sample floor plans for a typical basement or attic conversions.

Wow! A lot of work went into this one. It is excellent in all respects.

Not far into the book so I will update when I've finished. So far, I'm disappointed at the misspelled Spanish words. An author has a responsibility in the careful use of words, especially when using a language that is obviously not her primary. Raquel Cepeda needs to use a dictionary, do more research, and demand that her publisher hire a skilled bilingual editor. Example of words I've found misspelled in the first 15 pages: santiagero instead of santiaguero; communista instead of comunista; tigere instead of tiguere; astrasado instead of atrasada (not only is the word misspelled but gender is incorrectly used); and worst of all, 'hacer' instead of 'a ser' (hacer is 'do', a ser is 'to be').

This is an outstanding book. Raquel Cepeda manages to knit together a hip hop narrative of her sharp-elbowed childhood growing up in (mostly) New York City and Santo Domingo with a scientific (DNA testing) examination of, and reconciliation of, her ancestry.It works to a tee when she visits her abusive Dad and hopeless Mom as an adult to talk about her heritage (and get DNA cheek swabs, at least from Dad). She is the least sentimental of writers, so when she finds some flinty charity for her father (who she realizes she loves despite all the BS he laid on her) and her mother, who she realizes did her an unlikely favor by throwing her out of her childhood home and banishing her doom-y fuku (curse I guess), it is very, very poignant.Not quite Dickensian was her childhood but filled with equal parts family misery and hip hop joyousness. Ironically, the "How I Became a Latina" is really more in the memoir, in the content of her character, rather than the DNA research. She was a Latina in her soul before the DNA tests came back and showed her (to her evident delight) that the vanished Taino Indians live on in her, and that our ancestral home of Africa is big in her heritage, as well.Dominican women are the most beautiful in the world and the DNA shows why: the sturdiest of Spanish, Indian and African genes combine into a genetic tree of heaven.Viva Raquel! Besides a writer (on hip hop culture) and filmmaker she is also a boxer so she totally kicks ass. She also seems to have a happy family life and I love happy endings! Living well is the best revenge!

This book is a necessary read specially when discussing identity within the Latino community. The journey of this writer and her determination to excavate information about her roots is an inspiring and touching. Her relationship with her parents, growing up in NYC and the influence of hip hop culture in her life. All these elements weave in this story and keep your attention. From the moment I start reading I couldn't stop. I found myself counting the minutes for my lunch time and for my train rides to continue reading.The descriptions of her characters and locations in NYC are so vivid that you feel as if you are there with her. Also the amount of information about DNA testing she provides, definitely sparked my interest to learn more about it and to take on the opportunity to find about my ancestors.Raquel Cepeda is an inspiration to Latina writers like myself to keep writing about our stories!

this book was recommended to me by a student that i worked with and so when i was looking for something new to read i decided that this would be it for me. my student, who is dominican, could relate to the book and its message so i figured that it would be a great read for me as well since i am half dominican. i threw myself into the story from the minute i opened the book. the story is really compelling and made me wonder about my own ancestry. although the book is certainly about a journey that the author is still on, i did feel as though it ended abruptly and i was desperate for more information. overall, a wonderful read.

And inspiring. The author does an amazing job of telling, through her own story, what it is like for Dominican Americans who have one foot in each vastly different world. Her journey of self discovery, dealing with hardships and using her spiritual guides has resonated with me deeply.

Bird of Paradise was an awesome read! Raquel Cepeda was engaging the whole way through. This memoir kept me up late nights, turning pages to get more...

This book is so engaging from the first page and takes you through the author's upbringing in DR and NYC. In the process, she explores the line between being American, Latina, Dominican, and a New Yorker in a way that in a somewhat reminiscent mix of topics explored by Anzaldua and the style of Juno Diaz (if you need a comparison, but it's really not fair to compare, just read it). Then you get to how the author uses DNA testing to further explore her background and identity and, in the process, revisit challenging family relationships. Overall, this book will keep you on your toes wondering what happens next, feeling like you are right there as she rises above some real horrible stuff, and then learn about DNA testing to explore what it means to be Latin@.I hope this comes out as an audiobook and in Spanish so I can gift this to my family members who only speak Spanish and those who travel a lot by car.

The start of this book is relatively interesting, but the author continues down this spiritual journey that is a completely separate genre. Not worth it.

The content is quite good. However, I ordered AND returned two (2) paper paperback versions due to highly defective bindings - pages began to come out upon first use. This is the most complete and useful atlas of the first war that I've found. This 10 in by 7.5 inch, 338 page atlas is packed with maps and illustrations that will help you understand the individual battles and the war in general. It will be an indispensable companion as you read your other books and follow their narratives. The maps consume the whole page and include key cities, rivers, troop dispositions and movement. Included on each map are helpful comments to explain key aspects of the engagement. All the key land engagements including the Middle East, Italy and Gallipoli are included and even a few sea battles fought in the Med,North Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, North Sea, Adriatic, etc. There are even maps showing the key bombing runs of the war.The author includes many illustrations and descriptions of tanks, guns, planes, subs that will add to your reading experience.If you're looking for an atlas, you should definitely consider this one.

This book astonishes me: it's full of maps that are extremely well drawn, graphically engaging, and full of interesting anecdotes and helpful information. I point out that it is 'full of maps' and you might wonder why that needs to be said: not every atlas I've purchased has had exhaustive maps (as per National Geographic Atlas of History, what a disappointment). This book has a bit of written text, but is overwhelmingly devoted to maps of all sorts.Those are just the maps: this great resource also contains organizational charts, line drawings of tanks, ships, field artillery, howitzers, and more besides. It's well bound and printed on durable, heavy paper. All of this for $14? Unbelievable. Five out of five.

Excellent atlas, little text and lots of maps, so is a reference work. I used it as a supplement when reading a general history of the Western Front. Maps grouped by year for Eastern and Western fronts; separate sections for other theaters of war and for naval battles. Also has diagrams and illustrations of forts, military hardware, planes, ships and tanks. Includes subject index and military forces index by country. A must-have to see the war geographically

I bought this as a gift for my nephew. He was excited to receive it, but not more than a week later he reported that pages are falling out and most recently a whole chunk of pages came out as he was turning the pages. He's a teen and very respectful of books, so I'm quite disappointed with the quality of this considering it was a gift and although not exorbitant, it wasn't cheap. He does like the content, but I can't give a higher rating considering it won't last long.

Stupidly, I hit purchase on the Kindle version (I wanted the print version; I don't even have a Kindle). I noticed right away and went to cancel the order. Couldn't find a way. "Cancel" wasn't an option on the screens the FAQs sent me too; I still can't find it.Amazon is usually great on this stuff, so this is a shocker.

This book was really a good addition to the WW I section of my personal library. Venturing into the WW I battles on the Eastern Front, with little knowledge other than "Tannenberg", these maps really helped me identify the "who, where, and when" of the battles in Galicia.

I vascillated between this book by Arthur Banks and Adkin's "Western Front Companion." I finally chose this one because I could preview its contents and it cost "only" about $18 (paperback).This book by Banks exceeded my expectations. Its 338 pages consist almost entirely of black-and-white sketches; there are no photographs. As an atlas, I expected lots of maps, but I was pleased to see it also had some order of battle information and weapon descriptions. A number of pages even deal with dog-fighting tactics. As for the "meat" of the book -- its maps -- they are easy to read and show troop movements and provide notes with interesting insights. There are maps of forts and even a map of where Paris was shelled. The book also features an index, but there is no bibliography. There are a few narrative pages, but the book is best regarded as a reference, not a story.That said, I'm not sure the book presents any new information or perspectives that would interest serious scholars. The book's main value is its highly effective presentation of battle geography. It's ideal for students of the war.I purchased this book so I could follow along as I listened to Meyer's "A World Undone." For the price, I feel this book is a very good value.

The world would be a better place if we learned a few lessons from a cartoon cat. All Garfield books are worth having and re-reading again and again for laughs. One of the genuine FUNNY characters that has been created without catering too much to the politically correct brigade.Keep up the great work Mr Davis and thanks for giving us something to laugh at.

I have been a fan of Garfield sense I was first introduced to it as a young kid. After emailing and asking when their finally going to put these books on the Kindle it's finally been done. It is great to read it on the train and with the ability to zoom into each frame. I would like to only buy these books like this in the future as long as their not going to change them as other books have done in the past.

Have always loved the orange kitty. Was looking forward to this book in particular as I love dill pickles also!! What I have read of it is hilarious and can't wait until the next book comes out!! Love the cat and love the books!! Would purchase any books about him!!

Not much to say about this item. My family loves Garfield and took turns with this book. It's hard to pick a favorite of the series. Whoever did the binding on the book did a good job so was satisfied with the quality. It came with other items but not one page was marked or bent. I'd buy it again.

Right when I got this book, I didn't hesitate to go on the couch and read this book. The whole book was full of hilarious situations by Garfield, Oddie, and Jon. This book gave me the chuckles on the first page. Also, Jon ans Liz start to take there relationship to the next level [in a funny way]. This book entertained me so much, that I read the whole book on the first day I got it. Well, I hope you consider this book. If you do, I guaranty that you will easily fall in love with this book; Just like I did.

I own a lot of rhyming dictionaries.This is the only one I've used which has an easy-to-navigate index in the back, allowing you to just look up a word to find the section of rhymes with which it is listed. Maximum rhyming syllables, working backwards to single syllable rhymes at the top of the section, make it easy to work without interrupting the mental flow."Hmm... how do I spell this word phonetically?" That's what I go through with other rhyming dictionaries. I'd rather just look up the word and scan, instead of having to do mental gymnastics and calculations to even get started. All that, and I don't even get smaller numbers of rhyming syllables? No wonder the others have fallen by the wayside.This one ruined all other rhyming dictionaries for me.One more thought: the other thing which is nice about this particular edition (the 1986 paperback) is that the corners are rounded, just enough to match my medium Moleskine notebook. Older editions are identical in content, but have square corners. That's just a minor aesthetic consideration, but one which has had me buy this one at full price, instead of the pennies for which the older ones can be had. If that doesn't matter to you, any edition should do.Happy rhyming!

I'm not a poet or musician or writer, but for some reason, I just really like reference books like this. I'll definitely use it, just for the heck of looking things up. It's a nice, good sized book. It arrived promptly and in good condition. I also have 'The Complete Rhyming Dictionary' edited by Clement Wood.

Easy to use. In some cases, the rhymes follow British pronunciation, and so for American use, you may find some words included in an entry that don't seem to rhyme. Not a big deal. Otherwise, fantastic resource.

This rhyming dictionary has over 400 pages, is well organized, provides plenty of choices and is a great reference for poetrywriters.

My daughters needed this for a poetry curriculum and it has been very helpful, definitely something to keep on the shelf for reference even when not using for education but even for fun.

Gives endings to words. Pretty big selection. Only problem I have is that not everything truly rhymes. But nice selection.

I've had two over my lifetime, and this one is all I can really ask for when it comes to 'cheating'. It even teaches you obscure words - most of which would never be chosen - that rhyme with what you're looking for with definitions.With a dictionary, I find it helpful to step back and remind myself of what I'm trying to write before I start jamming rhymes in that sound silly later. So I try not to use it, but it certainly helps a lot from time to time.

Had a disaster on my bookshelf. Needed to replace some much used books. This one was better than the one it replaced.
