Dr. Marty is a vet that truly cares about his patients...more than his pocketbook.This book discusses diets and natural health maintenance for our pets. Unfortunately modern "healthcare" and "diets" are litterally killing our beloved pets. In 2017 (almost 20 years after this book was written) the cancer rate among dogs is one out of every 1.61! How depressing is that??!!Through this well-written book one learns about vaccinations, pet foods (both commercial and species-appropriate) and natural supplements.I was fortunate to meet Dr. Marty in person at Smith Ridge Veterinary in South Salem, New York. While my dogs have been on a raw homemade diet for 8.5 years, one of my dogs (a rescue) was having horrible skin issues. Most vets prescribed medications to alleviate SYMPTOMS and suppress my dog's immune system.Dr. Marty, on the other hand, focused on identifying the UNDERLYING CAUSE of my dog's skin condition. After evaluating his bloodwork he prescribed a regimen of natural supplements that support specific organ function. In only three weeks my dog is doing great - his skin has cleared up; he's no longer scratching; eyes are bright and clear; and he's very energetic.Dr. Marty truly loves animals and wants them to live a long, happy healthy life.I encourage anyone who loves their furry family members to read this book and consider implementing Dr. Marty's recommendations. Doing so will improve your pet's quality of life and save you heartache (and money!) in the long run.On a final note, this book is easy and fast to read. Dr. Marty seamlessly intersperses valuable information along with case studies, keeping the reader interested and turning pages.My favorite chapter was the second to last one, which discusses the spiritual connection between pets and their owners.This book makes great gifts for the animal lovers in your life. I gave half a dozen away last month and just ordered a few more for colleagues.My pups and I are blessed to have access to this incredibly special human being. If you cannot meet Dr. Marty in person this book is the next best thing!

I've bought this book 3 or 4 times now. I keep passing it on. It is full of wisdom and has molded how I take care of my dogs. We all love them, but we think doing what the vets ALL say about shots especially is best. Nope! This book points out that cancer used to be almost non existent. Now, with all the things we do to them it's rampant. This book opened my eyes to being more responsible. I've researched other places because of this book. Now, I would never ever get shots every year. They are most often good with just one set of shots. There is a simple test to see if they are still protected. Then the way that vets give all the shots over and over to little puppies is awful. Never again for me. Even the AKC says we should only give shots once every 3 years! Too many vets care more about money than they do animals.

This book was suggested to me by Sonya Fitzpatrick and she suggested we are over vaccinating our pets. It's great reading. I'm happy to note my vets already use titer testing and were happy to accommodate my request to do it instead of just vaccinating at the suggested protocols. Dr. Goldstein suggests to use this testing to see if pets need certain vaccines as he does suggest some are needed while others are not. Very good information for animal lovers. I was unaware that vaccines are not done by sizes but it's a one size for all approach (which is sad) but I am glad he is making us aware of the truth. TY Dr.

I feel strongly that the book should have a broader audience than pet owners. Much of what Goldstein does in his practice is derived from HUMAN medical research. The chapter on cancer, for example, proves the viability of alternative treatments for cancer, and his method is adopted from a doctor who basically got run out of the United States by the all-powerful Medical Establishment and moved to Jamaica to set up a practice. As long as we have a multibillion-dollar cancer industry in the United States, and as long as industrialists are on the board of every national cancer association and the panels that report to the government on the status of cancer research, what hope can we realistically have of finding a cure in mainstream medicine? If I get cancer, I won't call my doctor; I'll call my travel agent.Cancer is just one example of the work that Goldstein has done that is changing veterinary treatments, and he has taken his fair share of flak for it, which he writes about in this book. Were he practicing on human beings, he'd doubtless be harangued as a "quack" all over the Internet and by the American Medical Association. Would that we had more young doctors who would think outside the box and take the chances Goldstein took.

This book changed my dog's life and also changed my life. What an eye-opener! The chapter on pet food where Dr. Martin Goldstein explains that it comes from rendering plants, made me question the nutritive value of what I was feeding our Bernese Mountain Dog. Now she gets people food--the same meals that we eat. She is calmer, friskier and her coat is shinier. Of course if companies have an animal carcass --beef, chicken, etc.--they will sell the part that is suitable for human consumption to humans because they get much more money. Leftovers go to animal food, including all the dead animals disposed of that are processed in rendering plants. And they don't skin the deceased horses, household pets, zoo animals: hooves, hair, fur, bones --all of it goes into an unhealthy mix. I'm a nurse and this book is as good as it get. For home, office, and homework you can use it to give to doctors for reference. You can take it to your doctor visits and discuss your symptoms with the doctor. The pictures are remarkable and you are able to see and understand and pinpoint what's going on with your health.

I had an older version. In my openion this is very complete refferance & help, even if it is the latest version (1994)

Everyone should have a medical reference book at home (especially if you have kids), and this is a good one.There are several things that I like about the book. First, there is a "self-diagnosis" chart section in the front. If you have a bad headache, stiff neck, sick stomach, etc, you can go through the flowchart and get an idea of what might be wrong. This is not to replace a doctor's diagnosis, but it really helps me determine if I'm being overly-concerned or if I should see a doctor. I definitely use that section of the book.There are also sections of the different systems of the body that include descriptions of diseases. A little while back I was having problems with my digestive system. It really helped to read the section on colitis and Crohn's disease to understand more about them so that when my doctor discussed them, I could better understand him.There are also sections on First Aide, caregiving at home, selecting physicians, and even a section on terminal illness and death. Though those last few items are things we don't really want to think about, there is information about how to handle making arrangements and whatever else needs to be done.There is also a drug dictionary in the back which can come in handy, plus a medical glossary.Overall, I'm glad that I added this book to my library. It has an abundance of useful information about illness and medicine. I do have another medical reference guide as well, but it's not nearly this comprehensive. I think everyone should have a book like this on their shelves.

Okay, I'm not a hypochondriac, sorry. My mother purchased an earlier edition of this book, published in 1982. I had that edition until I recently ordered this one to replace it.I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic. I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book.I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up. If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up. I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member.My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section. Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal.I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative.

How to write a sentence. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? There, I've just written two. In the second, I omitted the subject which should probably be "It"; that is, "It sounds simple . . . ." This "It" standing for "How to write a sentence," the second "it" standing in for "sound simple."As a native English speaker, I can crank out sentences and analyses like these all day long. Why would I want to read Stanley Fish's thin book, How to Write a Sentence and How to Read One?Because he will make me—and you—think about sentences, which are, after all, basic to the writer's trade. For example, what is a sentence? Fish points out that writing guides offer answers: "A sentence is a complete thought." "A sentence contains a subject or a predicate." "Sentences consist of one or more clauses that bear certain relationships to one another." He says that "far from being transparent and inclusive, these declarations come wrapped in a fog; they seem to skate on their own surface and simply don't go deep enough."Okay, professor, what does go deeper? "Well, my bottom line can be summarized in two statements: (1) a sentence is an organization of items in the world; and (2) a sentence is a structure of logical relationships." A random list of items, for example, is not a sentence. He quotes Anthony Burgess: "And the words slide into the slots ordained by syntax, and glitter as with atmospheric dust with those impurities which we call meaning." In Fish's formula, "Sentence craft equals sentence comprehension equals sentence appreciation."He discusses sentence form and how to turn a list of words into a sentence, using the Noam Chomsky example: "furiously sleep ideas green colorless" which can be turned into something meaningful (or more meaningful) as "colorless green ideas sleep furiously," which could be a line of poetry. The question one has to ask oneself when writing a sentence is "What am I trying to do?""It is often said," he writes, "that the job of language is to report or reflect or mirror reality, but the power of language is greater and more dangerous than that; it shapes reality, not of course in the literal sense—the world is one thing, words another—but in the sense that the order imposed on a piece of the world by a sentence is only one among innumerable possible orders." And every time you revise a sentence, add a modifier, delete a clause, change a tense you've changed that "reality."Once Fish has discussed sentences generally, he spends three chapters describing the subordinating style, the additive style, and the satiric style of sentences with examples. Here is a sample of the satiric style. J. L. Austin cautioning readers not to be impatient with the slow unfolding of his argument: "And we must at all costs avoid over-simplification, which one might be tempted to call the occupational disease of philosophers if it were not their occupation."With practical suggestions of how to form an infinite number of sentences using a relatively few forms, Fish offers chapters on first sentences—"One day Karen DeCilia put a few observations together and realized her husband Frank was sleeping with a real estate woman in Boca" (Elmore Leonard)—and last—"He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance" (Mary Shelley). Wonderful stuff for any writer who is struggling to start a piece or finish one.The last chapter, "Sentences That Are About Themselves (Aren't They All?)" summarizes and extends the discussion to works like Ford Maddox Ford's The Good Soldier in which the narrator in telling one story is, as the reader comes to realize, unconsciously telling another story entirely.Every serious writer should keep How to Write a Sentence on the bookshelf to take down every year or so and read once again.

Author Annie Dillard ("The Writing Life," 1989) was asked by a student, "Do you think I could be a writer?" Dillard's response: "Do you like sentences?" According to Stanley Fish, author of "How to Write a Sentence," it's as important for writers to genuinely like sentences as it is for great painters to like paint. For those who enjoy an effective sentence and all that it involves, this short (160 page) book is insightful, interesting and entertaining. For those who consider reading or writing a chore, perhaps this book can help one's interest level and motivation regarding sentences, though the author's intended audience is clearly those with a genuine interest in writing.Fish would seem to be well qualified to write, having taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. However, as any student who has suffered with a highly qualified--yet thoroughly boring--professor knows, a significant part of the education/communication process involves instilling motivation. That's where Fish shines. If it might seem that a whole book on sentences has to be boring, Stanley Fish quickly overcomes this perception. His book is divided into 10 chapters: (1) Why Sentences?; (2) Why You Won't Find the Answer in Strunk and White [Strunk and White authored the classic, "The Elements of Style"]; (3) It's Not the Thought That Counts [nothing like a little provocation to get us interested]; (4) What Is a Good Sentence?; (5) The Subordinating Style; (6) The Additive Style; (7) The Satiric Style: The Return of Content; (8) First Sentences; (9) Last Sentences; and (10) Sentences That Are About Themselves (Aren't They All?).Author Fish includes many examples of powerful sentences from a very wide range of writers, such as Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Cicero, Lewis Carroll, Michel de Montaigne, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and others. Here's one illustrative example from John Updike: Describing the home run Ted Williams hit at his last at-bat in Boston's Fenway Park on September 28, 1960, Updike wrote, "It was in the books while it was still in the sky." Think about that for a minute.In conclusion, Stanley Fish is an enthusiastic writer, and he manages to convey and transmit his enthusiasm for writing clear, effective sentences in this highly readable book. If you are interested in writing (and reading), this book is worth your careful consideration.UPDATE on January 29, 2011: I wrote the above from the viewpoint of the reader contemplating buying this book for his or her own use. As I think more about the book, however, there's another possibility worth exploring. Specifically, this book could make a fine graduation (or other) gift to a niece, nephew or friend's child. First, it's short and easy to read, which means it might actually get read. Second, good writing is important in any profession. Third, the book helps reinforce the point that if you want to get good at something, it pays to study experts in the field. Fourth, and perhaps most important, the book supports the point that success in writing--as in virtually all endeavors--comes from practice, practice, practice. That's a pretty useful message to send any student.

If not for anything else, Stanley Fish's "How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One" made me understand why I love the authors I love so much. It put me back in touch with Pater, Stein, Woolf, Hemingway, and so many other writers that I devoured back in college and in graduate school. Normally, I dislike having the works I love dissected, deconstructed, whatever, because it is done so, usually, to meet some political agenda. In the case of Fish's work, it is done so for the reader's appreciation of the text and an appreciation of the writer's labor. What follows after all this appreciation, it is hoped, will be an ability for anyone interested in writing to do so with command, style and clarity. (However, I must admit that I am extremely self-conscious of my writing right now.)As an instructor of freshman English composition, however, I am reluctant to pooh-pooh Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style". While I understand Fish's complaint about its use (or over-use), I cannot dismiss "The Elements of Style" so quickly. Too many students have found it valuable. I am, however, considering using "How to Write a Sentence..." for my more advanced classes and elective writing courses.One last note, I got the hardcover, in nearly perfect condition, for under $10. In the old days a Lonely Planet guide was indispensible. That's less true in the age of the Internet. I got the Kindle version, to make it easy to carry, but alas it isn't nearly as user friendly as the good old paperback version. It's very hard to bounce around, to dog ear pages and to see the images/maps well. If you need this, don't get the Kindle version.

I'm not usually a fan of tour books in general even though I know they give lots of information. But I am really enjoying this one. Lots of pictures and much easier to get through than most of the tour books I've read. So looking forward to our trip next year to this region.

Good travel book with lots of information. Almost too much information to process. The tours I went on were the same in that they have so much information, it's impossible to process it all.

This guide got me around most of Israel just fine. I personally wish it had more detail on the nightlife in Tel-Aviv. It has good tips to help navigate the countrys' fraught political climate.

The Lonely Planet Israel and the Palestinian Territories provides a nice overview of things to do and places to see. It hits the highlights but does not seem as detailed to go beyond the main sights as I had hoped. Nonetheless, Lonely Planet does a good job of offering the main sights and is good for the casual and short-term visitor.

We went to Israel by ourselves and all of the areas we visited were in this travel book. It had just enough information to help us feel educated and interested but not too in depth that we felt like we were in a history class. This book made a HUGE difference for us, we got way more out of our trip and now every time I travel abroad I will ALWAYS take a Lonely Planet book with me.

What a great way to try out new authors. What a wonderful book to set aside for short reading periods. It takes only a few minutes to read one story.All of the authors contributed the royalty they should have received to the Jesus Film project.I believe my favorite, although many of the authors have already become favorites of mine before I found this book, was the story titled "At the Village Gate" by Sigmund Brouwer. It had such a surprise ending. I was caught off guard. But many others were a close, tying second place.This is also a value purchase for any church library. Treat your church friends and buy it for your church. You and they will be blessed. I was.

I've always loved short stories. And I've read enough short stories to know that writing a *good* short story is a tremendously difficult art. The writers of this collection may have proved themselves at writing novels, with successful Christian novelists such as Karen Kingsbury, Randy Alcorn, Angela Elwell Hunt, Terri Blackstock, Jerry B. Jenkins, Sigmund Brouwer and others all trying their hand at the shorter form of writing. These writers collectively are members of ChiLibris, an organization of Christian novelists, with all royalties going to the evangelistic efforts of the JESUS Film Project. The stories themselves have the theme of international settings and travel, and like the novels of these writers seek to focus our attention on eternal spiritual truths. Their ambitions and intentions may be noble, but that doesn't mean that they are guaranteed to write good short stories. Fortunately, they themselves are not very pretentious, as is evident from the introduction.The collection of 29 stories as a package is rather so-so, with many rather "ordinary" stories that fail to stir emotion or the heart. But there are a few outstanding efforts that are certainly worth reading. Probably the three best stories in the collection are Randy Alcorn's "Is This The Day?" which although weighed down by excessive informative detail, is a thrilling story about persecution in China with a suspenseful climactic twist; Athol Dickson's "Hannah's Home", a stunning tale of the love of an adoptive mother with a breath-taking twist; and Robin Jones Gunn's "Innocent as Doves", which makes you appreciate the riches of having your own copy of the Bible with a realistic tale about Bible smuggling in East Europe in the days of communism. Not quite on the same level, but also relatively good are Terri Blackstock's "So Shine", a fascinating and gripping conversion story which looks at a Christian from the point of view of an unbeliever; Robert Elmer's "Maren's Flag", a story about two women's misunderstanding of each other; Angela Hunt's "The Farthest Countries" which runs the danger of being trite, but describes heaven and hell in terms of real estate; and Karen Kingsbury's "A Reason To Live", a story of God's special providence involving a baby girl in a Russian orphanage.The rest of the stories in this collection, however, were nothing more than ordinary at best. I also encountered various theological difficulties, on numerous points where the theology of the authors clearly differed from my own, and this naturally also detracted from my enjoyment. Examples include views on grace, ecumenism, revelation, universalism, forgiveness, lotteries and angels. Is it worth it? Perhaps for the few outstanding stories, but aside from these if you miss this collection you don't miss much. Volume 2 in this series is a much better buy. -GODLY GADFLY

I am a librarian and I have an hour commute to and from work each day so I listen to a lot of audiobooks. This is one of the best audiobooks I have ever heard. One of the stories about a Chinese Christian man and his family living under oppression really blew me away.I was holding my breath as I waited to find out if the family would be shot for gathering to praise the Lord. It's a good thing that it is a rare tale, because I couldn't take that much suspense on a regular basis!

While I haven't read every story in the book, I've had a wonderful taste that has whetted my appetite to read it from cover to cover. I can't wait until it releases this summer so I can treat myself to stories by some of the best authors in the business.
