Critical Chain is another of the well-known Goldratt business novels related to Theory of Constraints. This one is ToC applied to traditional project management. ToC-wise itself there isn't much news. The new thing is the application of critical chain thinking to project management. I found the new parts somewhat disappointing as it assumed that one person has a fixed amount of skill and didn't seem to be open for the possibility of cross-functional teams. That was kinda a big bummer on the book for me, even though the story was pretty good.The mentor in the story is Rick Silver, who is a lecturer at a university on the eMBA program. One difference in structure of this business novel compared to many others is that the mentor is still figuring things out himself and he doesn't have all the answers. He wants to understand it all and discover something so that he can get tenure at the university. He gives a class on project management, and decides to focus on the real problems that people have. He discovers that projects have tasks that are sequenced and that each task is estimated with a buffer. The buffer is filled up (due to the scheduling) when it is estimated and thus adding a small buffer to every task will cause the total buffer to be small. Thus critical chain focuses on removing these small task buffers and put them at the end instead, to avoid the problem of many small buffers being eaten. Rick Silver helps his class in the eMBA through this thinking process and they try it out in their projects. Of course, it works and then... well I'll need to leave something for the reader still :)Eli Goldratt is a good author, so the story is nice and easy to follow. It keeps the reader engaged and it is an excellent way to explain the concepts of ToC and critical chain planning. For story, I'd give it a 4 or 5 stars. However, I was uncomfortable with the content and some of the ideas. It doesn't really discuss breaking constraints a lot, especially not breaking skill constraints through learning and teaming. But instead, it accepts all the supposed constraints and calculates buffers around them. Also, it doesn't really talk a lot about changes or about the fact that the tasks planned might not be the reality. All of that, made critical chain planning an interesting idea, but didn't trigger any wow moments and left me with more questions. These project assumptions and missing topics caused me to dislike the book at times, and thus I'll leave it with 3 stars. Not really recommended unless you are in very traditional projects with true constraints or you are a Goldratt fan.

This is the book to start with on Critical Chain (i.e. Critical Path with resource considerations). Eliyahu Goldratt was one of the founders in this field and this book is the logical starting point for learning about Critical Chain project management. This is written like a novel so you can easily finish the book within a few hours if you are a normal reader. The concepts seem to be easier to grasp since they are repeated within the pages a few times and that most ideas are backed up by examples with projects examples from people in the bookPros:Easy read since it is written like a NovelCritical Chain is an interesting project management styleWell though out and well executed with good examples.Cons:Critical Chain is shown as the ultimate savior to projects, even though there are issues that this method containsSometimes we spend a lot of time reading the story without any business insightsOverall this is great books and a good starting point for Critical Chain Managment

Not as fun as the Goal which I bought for ALL employees when doing turnarounds. The Goal developes new ways of thinking about managing and operating businesses and changing long-held conventions and concepts. I did not get the same feelings from Chain.

This book approaches The Goal in terms of how many insights it provides, especially for those working in a project environment and seeking to apply TOC principles. It addresses many of the questions that come up: what are the equivalents to constraint, buffer, drum, and rope when it comes to projects? How do we measure progress in a way that provides clarity? How do we sequence constrained resources when they are working on multiple projects? It provides a model for thinking about even a project environment as a flow of work that needs to be maximized.

What the great consultants can do that others cannot is provide a perspective that makes application and understanding simpler -- not more complicated. Goldratt's writing style, since my first exposure to his work in "The Goal" is of a remarkably clear-thinking view that is delivered in the form of very readable novels. We have all heard of "bottlenecks" and all have a clear idea of what that means -- but Goldratt made a science of the study of bottlenecks in our professional lives. As he expanded his views of the implications of bottlenecks we could find ourselves managing differently. As an example, we have all experienced the "all-hands" speech that explained we were behind in our work and we all needed to work harder to get back on track. What Goldratt taught us is that there is only one bottleneck at any given time, and that is the point that should receive focused management attention, not everyone in the organization. In a manufacturing facility, speeding everyone up means making excess inventory that cannot be used until the bottleneck catches up. It's a small thing with very relevant implications for managers.

Years ago i read the goal, then left the production field for 20+ years. I am now in charge of multiple projects and wanted to refresh my knowledge. I notices this book and gave it a try. Unputdownable is an euphemism, and the teachings can easily be applied to software projects, and to software testing teams providing services for multiple teams.It is a pity that this book is not mandatory for software developers and development managers.Who knows, maybe software would be delivered on time, on budget and with the expected quality level.

All children are different, and we live in very different times than when I was growing up. That being said, I would not have given this book to my daughter as a preteen. She would not have been ready for it then. That does not mean that all girls would not be. I strongly suggest that parents read this before handing it over. You know your child best and can gauge when/if they will benefit from this book. My daughter is fifteen, and I had no problem handing it over once I finished. I admit I am a bit of a prude, and there were sections in the book that made me cringe. I see them though as an opportunity for discussion at the appropriate age. This book is worth purchasing even if it has to sit on your shelf for a little while until the time is right.The author did a wonderful job of picking relevant topics and covering them with reason and genuineness. Her heart is evident on each page, and, though it does read somewhat sciency, I presume the heart of a neuroscientist might be somewhat sciency. The author is a mother, but her voice in the book is more of a mentor, a mentor who wants the very best for the reader. She shares both science and personal experience. I appreciate the intelligence of this book and how it is woven with candor and sincerity. I'm very glad I bought it and read it, and I look forward to discussing it with my daughter when she finishes it.

Where was this book when I was growing up!?!?

A very good read for young ladies. It has lessons on biology, self-esteem and psychology. It is very educational, but in a fun way. If you are a girl who doesn't think of themselves as pretty or worthy, you need this book. It will change your world.

This book is informative and I like the tone, but it makes some cultural and moral assumptions that many religious (and other) parents won't agree with, so be sure to read it before sharing it with kids, so you can discuss it as appropriate.

The one-star review is not for the content but the physical book quality. In truth, I didn't even read the book once I opened it and saw the text varying between dark and light, too light to read, and text boxes with borders running off the page (see pictures). it looks like someone ran the original book through a bad scanner and then printed it on a printer that was running out of toner. The publisher/copyright page says "Philomel Books An imprint of Penguin Random House LLC"' I don't know if that is the problem, the "imprint" company. However, I cannot give this as a gift, it is such poor quality. I'm returning it and will try to find a copy with normal looking text.

Mayim Bialik does a fantastic job of explaining puberty to young teen girls! I bought this for my friend’s daughter. He’s a single dad, so this book really did a good job of explaining Boys & drama.

This volume was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles (until February 2013) and at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto (March to June 2013). It is not strictly a catalogue of the exhibition, as it contains reproductions of works that were not exhibited (some of them very important, like the famous scenes of the Apocalypse by the Master of the Erbach Panels). It is a big book (426 pages), sumptuously designed and lavishly illustrated with reproductions of excellent color and clarity; the jacket text says there are more than 200 reproductions, many of which are full-page. The only comparable book, to my knowledge, is "Painting and Illumination in Early Renaissance Florence, 1300-1450," the catalogue of the major Metropolitan Museum exhibition in the winter of l994-95, and, although far narrower in scope and focus, the current book greatly surpasses the earlier volume in both the quantity and quality of its illustrations. At the same time, it updates all the relevant research and scholarship, which have been surprisingly productive in the intervening score of years. The book aims to provide a more than usually nuanced picture of the visual arts in the very early days of the Florentine Renaissance by concentrating on the complementary nature and connections between manuscript illumination and panel painting and on the many artists who practiced in both media. At the center is the undeservedly neglected figure of Pacino di Bonaguida (fl. 1303-ca. 1347), the most popular illuminator of the time and also an accomplished panel painter, in fact one of the first Italian artists to achieve equal renown in both arts. Even though Pacino is recognized as "the virtual hero of this volume," (19) there is also much of Pacino's better known contemporaries, Giotto, Daddi, Gaddi, et. al., and their schools and workshops, and the various "Masters of the . . . ," whose styles are recognized even though their names are unknown.The book is divided into five thematic areas, each introduced by one or more prefatory essays followed by signed entries on the objects of the exhibition and the copious attendant illustrations. "Painting and Illumination in Early Trecento Florence" is a general overview; "Devotional Art" treats religious panel paintings and liturgical manuscripts; "Painting and Narrative" deals with non-liturgical material, emphasizing the illumination of copies of Dante's "Divine Comedy," which became something of a minor industry in Florence at the time; "The Laudario of Sant'Agnese" presents the luxury manuscript of that compilation of songs illustrated by Pacino and the Master of the Dominican Effigies, a project which Christine Sciacca, who curated the exhibition and edited the catalogue, calls "the most beautifully executed and ambitiously designed" work of all those considered (219); and "Technical Studies: The Early Florentine Workshop" again highlights Pacino, with essays on his workshop, his techniques, and the scientific analysis of his materials and practices. The volume concludes with twenty-one pages of references that amount to a specialized bibliography of the subject (and indicate the depth and breadth of the contributors' knowledge) and comprehensive indexes of names, titles, and works of art. This is a very important contribution to our understanding of early Florentine art. I found almost all of the essays to be highly informative and very well written, and each of the entries on the art works is a concentrated review of the current state of the relevant scholarship. Much of that is necessarily centered around issues of attribution and dating, which some readers may find tedious, but which is the sort of fundamental discussion that underlies our perceptions of the art. This is an expensive book and probably not for someone with only a casual interest in early Renaissance art, but it is the type of thing that comes around only rarely, and more die-hard aficionados will find it a welcome addition to their libraries.

This beautiful book is a catalog of an important exhibition held at the Getty Museum. Richly illustrated with over 200 items which include 7 panels by Giotto as well as works by Daddi and Gaddi. Additionally there are 9 panels by an obscure artist Pacino de Bonaguida who was active in Florence from 1303 to 1340. de Bonaguida was a prolific illustrator and this exhibition features all the surviving leaves of his great work "Laudano of Sant'Agnese". There are also numerous examples of other illuminations by this and other artists as well as some illustrations of stained glass panels from this period.The art works featured in this volume are generally of very high quality and beauty. Most seem to be in a good state of preservation. If you are attracted to the artistic creative output of this era I urge the prospective purchaser to acquire a copy of this outstanding publication.
