Had to purchase for a class and found it to be really enjoyable. It helps bring C.S. Lewis' writing to life in a deeper and richer way. I am thoroughly enjoying reading it.

C.S. Lewis has been dead for over forty years, but he's one of the hottest authors around right now. Lewis has always been a favorite in Christian circles and college campuses, but now that his famed children's fantasy series, "The Chronicles of Narnia" are being adapted into major motion pictures, his works are gaining an even wider audience. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA AND PHILOSOPHY is a collection of philosophical essays that examines and explores the moral, ethical, and sociological realm that Lewis created through his Narnia series.Was Lewis a sexist? Do dogs go to Heaven? Do words have any power or real meaning? These are just a sampling of questions that the essays in this book examine. Some of the essays I found fascinating and others were just so-so. However, overall I enjoyed reading the book. My only preface to would-be readers is that many of those who contributed to the book are Christian professors. This isn't anything negative, but would be readers should know that before buying the book.

Into Narnia? Want to go deeper? This is excellent book to aid with that. Not written for professional philosopher. Not written for those who just want to leave Narnia as the entertaining read it is, even for child in all of us.This delves into the philosophy behind Narnia which for sure Jack was into as well, for he taught philosophy early on in his career and was avid philosopher all his life.Here parallels to such metaphysics as time, epistemology, altruism, objective morality, and more, they are each treated here from Narnia position by this group of committed philosophers. There is definite Christian bent to their worldview, as there was with Jack's. The article on Aslan and Other Religions explores the stickiest issue with Lewis' theology, that of inclusivism. This discussion brings forth the issues in contention. Likely this is why many Christian apologists shy away from Lewis, due to his likely unbilbical stance here. Sure we would all like to believe this somewhat, but the Scripture evidence is lacking.I particularly found Kevin Kinghorn's work on virtue epistemology fascinating, especially as he sees it in relation to Uncle Andrew's inability to hear the Talking Animals.Further, Michael and Adam Peterson's venture into time and eternity from Narnian view is cogent and timely, ha! Angus Menuge tackles the gripping topic of "why Eustace Clarence Scrubb"almost deserved his name. This is engagement with modern secularism exposing its bias which even it itself cannot provide all evidence it seems to demand from other views. Closeness to Transcendent is vital area to explore and this will help.Hopefully for those kin to engage in these thoughts, this is good source to take off exploring these some twenty authors ventures into Aslan's country.

The Chronicles of Narnia and Philosophy is an excellent companion and must-read for anyone who is interested in what C.S. Lewis puts at stake in his much beloved Chronicles. The essays are well written and cover topics from time to Lewis' apparent inclusivist views as shown in The Last Battle. The Philosophy portion of this book does not overwhelm and definitely adds to the magic, rather than putting a grown up squash on it.

I've enjoyed several of the books in this ongoing series of culture and philosophy. I have to say that thus far this is my least favorite of the series. Most of the essays are Christian philosophy rather than ecumenical, a disappointment to anyone who has read any of the other books. While I realize that the Narnia books are deeply Christian, there are different ways of looking at the series over all, as Karin Fry's essay in this book proves. Unfortunately, her essay is the exception to this poorly edited volume in what is otherwise a good series. If you are a Christian, you will likely enjoy this book. If you are a Christian looking to learn more about other schools of philosophy other than theist, you should look elsewhere. If you are not a Christian and find ecumenical discussion tedious or boring, don't even bother with this book. There are too many other books on philosophy out there to bother reading this one.

By "Philosophy," apparently they mean conservative, ecumenical religious ideology. If you disagree with Neil Gaiman and think poor Susan got what she deserved, this book is for you. I'm not a member of an organized religion (in fact I have a distaste for them) but I always saw a real spiritual beauty in Aslan that made me hope God is that deep and full of love. This book, though, reads more religion into the books than is justified. I recognize that religious philosophy is a valid area of thought, but this book offers little else, which is a real disappointment.

This book. AAARRRGGGHH!!! It sucks. I hope you are not forced to get this like I was because you are in for a nasty suprise. Go to websites and research the material before you bang your head against the wall like I did trying to understand what the heck was going on with this book.

Great book For Veterinary Technology Students affordable, vivid colors, and the shipping was fast.

This book was required for my radiology class in a vet tech program. It was easy to read and follow, and has helpful tests for each chapter. It explains how radiography works, and how to position properly.

Nice to have a clean, hard copy to view instead of the one on my iPad. So many picts and easier to see in hard copy.

Very well done on the pictures and drawings for the positions. Handy book. And the review questions are a big help and a very smart idea to have in the book.

Albert Einstein was a fascinating person, and I looked forward to reading this Hourly History offering. Unfortunately, this book failed to satisfy, for many reasons.There are countless errors, mistakes, and unbelievable statements in the book, but possibly the worst is attributing a statement to Einstein that came from Alexandre Dumas. “The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has its limits” has been mistakenly attributed to Einstein. Writing a history on someone’s life requires checking and rechecking your facts, and this error causes one to consider how many other “facts” in the book are just not true?The editing was horrible, or simply non-existent. Many sentences were grammatically incorrect. For example: “While lodging with one of his professors, Jost Winteler, Einstein fell in love with their daughter, Marie” or “…the equations all looks like Greek.” Other sentences contain different errors: “…contented in his work as a patent inspector.” Some have unwieldy sentence structure: “The United States became the only country to develop nuclear weapons during World War II successfully.”Chronologically, the book flips back and forth, making the book confusing. It also contains easy to correct mistakes. Two successive paragraphs contain these sentences: “By 1908, Einstein was a professor at the University of Zurich.” The next paragraph informed us “By 1909, Einstein was a famous personage in the scientific world and was offered a professorship in Zurich.”In numerous sections, it almost appears as if the author discovered a thought on Einstein written by another, but was unable to completely understand the concept and thus failed to explain the idea properly. One paragraph talks about Einstein hating racism, and lauds Einstein for joining the NAACP, visiting a black college in Pennsylvania, and paying “…the college tuition for a black student.” The next paragraph states “…Edison assisted in many Zionist causes. This was rather peculiar, noting how he was never a practicing Jew.” With an illogical statement as this, one can only wonder why the author didn’t state that it was peculiar Einstein hated racism, since he wasn’t black. Why didn’t Hourly History simply point out the causes that Einstein championed and leave out the opinions?I could go on and on, but you get the point. Factually questionable, error-filled, and grammatically challenged, this book is not worth your time. One star.

I agree with another reviewer that the e-book Albert Einstein: A Life From Beginning to End could use a good editor. I also did not like that the book jumped from timeframe to timeframe without justification which made sections confusing. This is the first book I have read about the life of Albert Einstein; therefore, I found his home life to be quite interesting and confusing. In the past I have primarily focused on his genius. The author of this book clearly respected and seemed to love his subject. I think this book is useful to anyone who is never read anything about the life of the man.

A well balanced and written account summarizing the genius and man who changed our lives forever. The writer depicts Einstein as not only the 20th century's premier genius but as a humble man who loved peace and wanted the best for humanity.

I loved reading this book. I'm a great fan of Albert Einstein. He wasn't perfect (as none of us are) but he had one of the most brilliant and imaginative minds for his time... Which is still very relevant for our day.

Good read about one of the greatest minds of all time. Einstein gave us knowledge that keeps on giving. He did have his faults. He was unfaithful but, he cared very much for all his children and friends. We will be using his discoveries and theories for years to come.

Simplistic is the word to cover this book. Granted that it is a short biography, however it is a roll call of events not even in chronological order that gives no insight into the man or his ideas

Junot Díaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. Pros: For me, this book somehow manages to embody that elusive “magical realism” genre that so many authors have attempted to capture since Gabriel Garcia Marquez coined the category with “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” The characters are real and flawed and complex, the history is rich, and the story sucked me in immediately. This is honestly one of the best books I have read in the past few years. I have given it as a gift to multiple people, and they have had nothing but good things to say about it.Cons: Don’t buy the Kindle edition. You need the hard-copy with the footnotes right on the page for you to read right as they come up in the book. There are a lot of footnotes, and they’re 100% needed to fully enjoy/understand the book.

Another book which, but for my office's book club, I'd never have even heard of, let alone read: and which I'm terribly glad I did. (I'm also terribly glad I bought a used copy, but that's another issue.)What we have here, is the story of a nerd - a fat (incredibly fat), ugly, intellectual, verbose nerd whose parents (Dad left when Oscar was but a wee thing) came from the Dominican Republic but who grows up in Paterson, New Jersey, and who dreams of just two things: love (ideally including the physical sort) and becoming the Dominican Tolkien.He is, as you might expect, a rather frustrated young man.Whole sections of the book, though, are not directly about Oscar, but about his family: his mama, Belicia De Leon (nee Cabral), the child of a cursed family; his sister Lola; Beli's father Abelard, who fell afoul of Trujillo and met the end that tended to meet such afoul-fallers. Perhaps a third of the book is directly about Oscar de Leon (who acquires the nickname Wao when some Domincan homies apparently have never heard of, and cannot correctly pronounce, Wilde).It's written, mostly, in a brilliant English, but with large quantities of Spanish, Dominican Spanish slang, and I don't know what-all else. (I learned a number of Spanish words during the course of the book, some of which are not for use in polite company. Also the N-word pops up far more often than a gringo blanco like myself is comfortable with.)Most of the story is narrated by Díaz's stand-in, a Dominico called Yunior, which raises questions of how he knows some of the things he seems to know. Indeed, the final chapter reads to me as something tacked on by Yunior to give Oscar a bit of a happy ending. Your take on this may vary.Anyway, a lot of the book takes place in the Dominican Republic of Trujillo and his successors; the climax occurs during the unacknowledged occupation of the DR by America in the '80s; and it would be incredibly grim if it were not also incredibly funny. I can't decide whether it's a funny book that happens to be sad, or a sad book that happens to be funny. It's funny that way.What propels the story more than Yunior's voice is the characters. They sparkle with life even when terrible things are happening to them, and they change, both as time passes, and as we get to know them better. (Mama Beli, as we first see her through Oscar's then Lola's eyes, seems like a terrible person; then we learn her story and everything just shifts.)It is a terrible, a tragic story with the inevitability that makes a tragedy tragic and not merely bathetic. You won't go far wrong picking it up - from a library, or a used book emporium, or some such, please.

This book was easily one of the best I read this year. Its blend of cultural history, 80's nerdery, mystical curses, and romanticism create a relatable family history. My family is Cuban and this family history was so reminiscent of my own. It is hard not to sympathize with Oscar and his family. Oscar is the perfect pure soul who's goal is something we all strive for love and acceptance.If you are a fan of magical realism and cultural diverse stories definitely give this a try. If you have ever felt like an outcast please give this a try.

More than the story of Oscar --an obese, bullied, comic book-loving, fantasy role-playing nerd on a desperate mission to lose his virginity-- this is the story of a Dominican family's fukú: a potent curse said to have been cast on Oscar's grandfather Abelard by the Dominican dictator himself, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. A fukú may affect generations, until someone along the line manages to find the right zafa to break the spell.In a combination of Spanglish, slang, and the occasional made-up expression, Junot Díaz effectively captures the spirit and evolved identity of a transplanted Latin American family onto U.S. culture. It touches upon the struggle of a society affected by oppressive power, and the resilience and determination needed in their diaspora. As a native Hispanic, I wonder if and how non-Spanish speakers get to fully understand this book, because it's written not only in Spanish but in Spanish (untranslateable) slang. Also, as a native Hispanic, I was annoyed at the multiple grammatical and spelling errors in Spanish. Couldn't Diaz have found a bilingual editor?The book's chapters alternatively tell the story of Oscar and his immediate family members. Narrated by Yunior, Lola's on-again, off-again boyfriend, we learn of the De León clan's woes and how fukú, inevitably, catches up with Oscar. From the title we are aware that Oscar will die, but that news does not lessen our sorrow because by then we are despairingly rooting for his success. Oscar's unquenchable thirst for love is heart-wrenching because it is snubbed by every female he encounters. "His affection --that gravitational mass of love, fear, longing, desire, and lust that he directed at any and every girl in the vicinity without regard to looks, age, or availability-- broke his heart [and ours] each and every day". His family members and their struggles also break our hearts in their own struggles to survive their personal hell.As for the dose of Dominican history included in the book, I am so curious about Trujillo now that I will follow with Julia Alvarez's "In the time of the butterflies" and Mario Vargas Llosa's "La fiesta del chivo". Intense!

Bruce's books are the best! He has great advice and his tips really work! I highly recommend all his books. My two "must read" suggestions are How to Get a Man Without Getting Played and Texts So Good He Can't Ignore. I really wish I'd read these years ago! Bruce breaks everything down and makes it all so easy to understand and he has helpful tips for implementing his advice. It just takes practice!

I almost never write reviews on Amazon, but I had to log on right after finishing this because I really enjoyed this quick read about men. It was short, sweet, and not belittling in any way toward women, which I appreciated. I can safely say that the content of this book matches a lot of what my boyfriend constantly tells me he needs, wants, and appreciates. The content seems very credible and is written in a "from a father to a daughter" style. That said, the content is beautifully and simply articulated in a way that I don't think most fathers could achieve.I genuinely think every woman needs to read this book with an open mind. I myself used to be a very aggressive female in relationships because that's what worked well for me in the workplace. I learned to tone it down quite a bit when I met my current boyfriend who taught me graciousness, patience, and kindness. we've been together for over a year now and I couldn't be happier.Thanks to the author for reaffirming some things I already knew and showing me even more ways I can communicate effectively with men.

Good read. Straight to the point honest and upfront rules-with a quick why. Some of it seems like it would be common sense, but most times many women are not as aware when we get into relationship and get emotional from time to time. It's a super quick read. I personally did not find it sexist or offensive, the writer seems pretty progressive in his mindset.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it to be interesting, relevant and packed full of practical wisdom. So grateful for the down to earth, open hearted sincere sharing. Refreshing and eye opening in so many ways. Very enlightening and I highly recommend this book to everyone looking to build a mutually beneficial long term relationship/marriage.

This book not only starts off with a captivating title ( I mean c'mon whose dad told them about their younger more adventurous days) it quickly throws you into a plethora of interesting perspectives on men. Of course giving all men the same blanket to fall under sounds like it could be a bit vague but it surprised me at how much i could relate to this book. As a male I suspected this book might have been an "interesting" read, but I was pleasantly surprised and have a few female friends that I will be recommending this to.

A profoundly important book, written with great intellectual integrity and wit. I recommend this book to everyone I have occasion to speak about the built environment. It was reading for me in architecture school at UCB 40 years ago. I ran across it again in 2013 reread it, renewning its significance. A cherished read and visual journey.

This book is a classic, and I would consider it a 'must read', not just for anyone interested in architecture, design, anthropology, culture, sociology, or environmental engineering, but really for anyone who lives in a house, cave, or tree. It's a quick read with lots of illustrations, and I've been through it time and time again.

Exactly what you'd expect.

I've owned several copies of this book. I used to give them away because I thought the content should be known and appreciated by everyone. But the book got too expensive to give away, so now I have this copy to keep. I am an architect - learned more from this book than any other source. Given current understanding of climate change, we need now more than ever to learn from these models of using indigenous landforms, weather patterns, and materials to build intelligent and comfortable buildings.

A seminal work that architects and architecture students must read at least once in her/his lifetime ...

This is by far the best cookbook I've seen for the Instant Pot and similar devices. The recipes are interesting, clever and well thought out with an international flare. Might it be a little intimidating for a newbie? Maybe, but persevere and it will be worthwhile and you will learn a lot as you go. I've been using my IP since 2014; Yet, today is the first day I attempted Salmon in the IP. ( I usually make it Sous Vide.) Melissa's Caramel Salmon looked so good I thought I'd give it a try. Frankly, I didn't think I was reading the instructions right, or maybe they left out something, because one of the basics of IP cooking is to always have 1 cup of water in the bottom so it comes to pressure.....But the liquid in the ingredients came to about 5 1/2 tablespoons and the juice of 1/2 lime.....not even enough to cover the bottom of the pot, but, that Salmon was wonderful, with great flavor and texture. I'll certainly be making that again....amazing....I was surprised and happy to see an IP version of Maqluba, a Middle Eastern dish that is time and labor intensive. This is a dish I probably would never attempt on the stove but, I can see trying Melissa's version. Going to hunt down some lamb necks for the Lamb Tagine with Apricots and Olives.There are so many outstanding recipes in this book. The Coconut Curry Chicken looks delicious. Really good instructions for making yogurt in the IP and I like that she does not shy away from using some heavy creme (optional) which really adds to the richness. There are the recipes you expect to see like Chili, pulled pork but, with a Cuban twist, brisket Korean style and of course baby back ribs. I'm looking to try the Duck Confit....There is a Green Persian rice with Tahdig that looks like something you'd see in Ottolenghi books. I'm so bad...I just ordered the non-stick liner for the IP so I can try this and a few others like the Maqluba that looks like it would be easier to unmold in a non stick liner. I didn't even mention the recipes for the soups, risottos, egg and the bean dishes. If you like desserts there is a nice assortment of puddings. I can't say enough nice things about this book. I hope there is a volume 2......

I’ve made Osso Bucco and the Beef Barley Vegetable Soup and both came out great. Keep in mind the title “Dinner in an Instant” doesn’t mean these recipes are fast, just made in an “Instant” pot. Most of the recipes also have alternative instructions in case you want to use a slow cooker aka crockpot instead.So glad to find an IP cookbook that doesn’t rely on ingredients like cans of cream of mushroom soup.Update 11/10/17: I’m still really enjoying this cookbook! I’ve started cooking something from this book each weekend then saving the leftovers for lunches or freezing the leftovers if I don’t get around to eating them in within a few day.The beef and bean chili is a winner. Just made the Vietnamese Chicken + Rice soup tonight and it was delicious. I’ve also been using the recipes for making bone broth, soft and hard boiled eggs, dulce de leche, and steel cut oats.I think there is a good chance that I could end up making almost every recipe in this cookbook - something I don’t really do with other cookbooks, Will definitely check out this authors other books!

I love this book. I’ve made three recipes so far (butter braised potatoes, chicken curry, and black beans with chiles) and they all turned out absolutely delicious. And the time estimates are fairly accurate (given that I prep as I go). I was using my instant pot regularly before, but now I absolutely love it. There aren’t a million recipes, but the ones in the book are carefully selected. I tend to collect cookbooks and this is one of the best I’ve found. Fantastic recipes with approachable ingredients.Update: I’ve continued to use this cookbook with excellent results. I made the Vietnamese chicken soup and the chicken and dumplings. Both were made after a busy day at work and were simple, but absolutely delicious. I have dozens of cookbooks and this one may be my absolute favorite. Great food that’s easy to prepare (I’ve mostly been able to prep as I cook) and tastes amazing. If I could give it more than five stars I would. I’m looking forward to making the broccoli rabe with white beans next. This is one of the few cookbooks where every recipe is a possibility (excluding the recipes with beef and lamb, which I do not eat). I may end up cooking my way through the book.My only minor complaints are that I wish she had included times for common varieties of dried beans (similar to the rice section) and that she would note in the ingredient list if the quantity will be divided (I’ve been adding my own note after dumping in the full amount of butter or oil before realizing it was supposed to be part).
